Who is to blame for the FCPS BLACKBOARD Multi-Million Dollar Failure ????
Posted by: The Supe ()
Date: April 15, 2020 10:21PM

Apparently, nobody. It was undefined "technology challenges."

Blackboard has shared the following statement with Fairfax County Public Schools:

“Blackboard has been working hard with Fairfax County Public Schools to move its 189,000 students to fully remote instruction during this unprecedented crisis. We encountered unexpected technical challenges over the past couple of days that caused some users to experience issues when logging into the FCPS 24-7 Learning site, and we are working closely with FCPS to resolve the issues as quickly as possible. In addition, we are working with FCPS to require students to log in to the FCPS 24-7 site and authenticate their identity before they are permitted to join a virtual classroom.

“As a Fairfax County-based company, we are deeply committed to providing Fairfax students and parents the robust and secure learning environment that they want and need. We apologize for the disruption this has caused to instruction and we appreciate patience as we all work together as an education community to ensure continuity of learning for students.”

Why is FCPS using 20-year-old technology? Lowest bidder?

Zoom figured out their issues and is now used by millions of students around the world.

Blame the root cause - morons who vote democrat, just like the Baltimorons who keep electing democrats to run their city further into the ground. Libtards are incapable of learning from their idiocy.

No one is responsible.

The school board is sad about this. They will make statements.

Teachers, parents, and students are mad.

No FCPS employee who makes over $100,000 a year will be held accountable.

It's either an "unforeseen" technology problem, or some junior staffer will be blamed.

Well hold on to your hats! Teachers working on yet the latest version of a virtual classroom this morning crashed the new system as well - with just the teachers on it setting up their classrooms. Imagine an extra 190,000 students?

FCPS Department of Information Technology seems to load test only when all their teachers have prepared 45 minute lessons and have asked all the parents and students to log in expecting education to happen. No load testing other than that.

Some disturbing facts:

1) Fairfax County Public Schools has a department of Information Technology run by a woman, Maribeth Luftglas, married to an executive at Blackboard.

What a conflict of interest. You think anybody who works for her is going to suggest a competing product to Blackboard? Not if they want to keep their jobs.

A number of years ago, there was a news story on the local NBC affiliate about Blackboard. Had interviews with the company, quotes from an executive, then the reporter "went out into Fairfax County" to a "random" house and found four boys around the kitchen table working on their computers on Blackboard, while their homemaker mother baked cookies (literally with an apron and pulling the baking sheet out of the oven). The only thing was, the little homemaker was our head of Information Technology (she was not identified as such) and the laptops the boys were using were owned by FCPS and ripped out of some cart somewhere. Even her broadband was maintained by an FCPS employee. What a scam!

2) For twenty years her family's Blackboard stock options hung in the balance as everyone--students, teachers, parents--complained about Blackboard.

3) For more than five years, FPCS has approved the use of Google Classroom, Google Meet, Google Docs and the entire suite of Google products. They have been in use in FCPS on a large scale. FPCS has a "walled garden" within Google called fcpsschools.net, with features like an individual email for each student and they can only received messages from school personal and other students.

Google Classroom has already been approved by FCPS's rigorous security process.

With one tweet, FCPS's School Board could turn off blackboard and blackboard collaborate and let the lawyers figure out getting out of the contracts and we could immediately be using a system with Google behind it.

But instead, Maribeth Luftglas is going to jam another Blackboard product (Blackboard collaborate) down everybody's throats.

$10 says on Tuesday April 28th we all get yet another video apology from FCPS saying they are going to take another week and move everybody over to Google Classroom??

Who cares about a major fuckup? We only care about meeting diversity quotas. Because diversity makes us... uh.. gooder!

Let’s review the minutes of the previous FCPS board meeting and count the number of times diversity was mentioned and the number of times Blackboard or distant learning was mentioned.

This guy posted this on another thread. Her husband does not, nor has he ever worked for blackboard.

Suuuure fcps can “design” an “online platform” for “distance learning.”
Just like the billion dollar IRS can efficiently distribute stimulus checks.....

If you make over $150k combined with your significant other(for dems it’s your gay lover), why are your kids in public school???

Don’t buy a $70k Audi suv and send two of your kids to a decent school you can have a say in their learning.

Public schools are for the poor, niggers or illegals(or a combo of all three)

FCPS got one thing right ... Maribeth Luftglass just "resigned" (i.e., was fired). Now we can move beyond her disastrous tenure and I hope get someone in the seat with no conflicts of interest who cares about the kids.

If by "taking responsibility" Brabrand meant firing Luftglass, he got it right!
Thank you!

WTOP has confirmed that Maribeth Luftglass, who has been the assistant superintendent of the Department of Information Technology for Fairfax County Public Schools for over two decades, has stepped down effective immediately.

Operating Officer Marty Smith will take over day-to-day operations.

Thank you Fairfax Underground for keeping us informed

Just wait until you hear what is coming next. The schools are going back to live teaching using blackboard tools that are currently crashing and glitching. Security issues will persist for live classrooms and teachers have no choice but to obey orders from the top. FCPS will stop relying on blackboard 24/7, but will continue to use other products such as blackboard collaborate for live sessions and blackboard scheduler to issue personal links for online sessions. It’s unbelievable. No one is able to stand up for students, for families and for teachers on the front line.

School Board is too busy congratulating themselves on being all blue, changing school names, and other nonsense.

No time to focus on how to teach kids.
