In this area, Episcopal priests with Bob’s experience average 127K, factoring in housing allowance. Bob makes much more, despite the parish’s rapidly declining fortunes and his feckless job performance.
Bob’s compensation package also is sorely outdated, as an M.Div with PhD these days goes for 200k, all in. It also reflects some glaring gaps, including lack of disability coverage. So, Bob’s successor likely will have a far more rational compensation package, and likely will work a whole lot harder.
Historically, Dysfunctional Bob’s penchant for lengthy vacations, private schools for his kids, plenty of golf, hair transplants, and other attributes of the good life has left the family with no short-term savings. As a result, public records reflect multiple lawsuits against the Malms involving allegedly unpaid bills.
Prior to her death, Bob’s mother transferred several properties to Bob and his sister. Subsequently, the parish’s gift of a 100k bonus to Bob in 2014, and his inheritance of half his mother’s estate, have finally pushed Dysfunctional Bob into solvency. That said, his position in his personal residence, subsidized through more than $1 million in church funds, remains marginal due to deferred maintenance, obsolete bathrooms and windows, and a general lack of improvements. In other words, it’s what Trump would term a shithole.
And, if as I suspect, Bob and Leslie divorce following his retirement, her claim on marital assets may well leave Bob in a precarious financial position going forward.
