Where to donate furniture - last minute
Posted by: Mover ()
Date: February 27, 2010 12:10PM

I am moving on Monday and have furniture I need to get rid of. Any idea who might pick up with very short notice? Or where I can drop off furniture near Tysons/Falls Church?

Thanks,

Take pictures of it and post it for free on Craigslist. If it's at all decent or functional it will get picked up quickly by college students or immigrants.

There is Unique Thrift there by 50/Gallows. They have a large dropoff area that people leave piles of stuff at.

If you have nice stuff, Upscale Resale on 29/Gallows accepts furniture.

Craigslist is best, you don't have to transport anything. I mentioned taking pics, that will help get stuff picked up quicker, but it's not necessary. You can just put stuff out and post a "curb alert" if you want. Just make sure to take the ad down once it's gone.

There is also Freecycle. I've gotten rid of tons of stuff through Freecycle:

Freecycle is irritating because you HAVE to sign up for the email list which comes several times a day. People there are more reliable than on Craigslist, though.

Take it to the salvation army in Manassas (behind the walmart) or to Good Will in Manassas (off of 234 Business across from the Giant Food). Even if they aren't open on Sunday (or you go there today), you can just drop your things off and then claim them on your taxes.

Just drop something off sometime this year. They'll give you a blank receipt. Fill in whatever you dropped off and the furniture. It doesn't matter if you dropped them off on the same day or not. Just give a fair value to the item and you're good.

You can change the e-mail to daily digest if you don't want all of the messages, or you can redirect everything to a different folder than your inbox.

You should have no problem getting rid of this stuff on Freecycle.

Why not try all options and drop what you don't get rid of by Monday?

I got a great desk and cabinets from craigs list this week.

Appreciate all the helpful replies. I had to just put some stuff next to the trash. Thankfully, it was taken within 30 minutes. However, I'll probably have more stuff to get rid of very soon.

Thanks Again. :-)

You don't have to sign up for the emails if you have a free Yahoo email account. I have one specifically for Freecycling. I don't get ANY emails from Freecycle. I have my group settings set for "No Mail" so I only go to the Yahoo group when I have something to sell. When people reply to my posts, the group is set up to automacally email only the original poster rather than the entire group, so I do get those emails directly.

Freecycle is a great way to keep crap out of landfills.

I didn't mean to write something to "sell" I meant something to "give away."

I tried to drop off an upholstered couch and loves ate, but Uniques turned it down. They have a furniture supplier that is their sole supplier.

I realize this thread is a couple of years old, but for someone looking to donate furniture that is in good useable shape in the eastern part of the county, one option is ACCA in Annandale.
