The Sports Junkies

If any one here is an advertiser or sponsor these idiots, do not give them free stuff. Cakes and Brett Oliveria take your nice gestures of goodwill, and put them on Ebay for sale. Stuff that is supposed to be promotional, or for guest prep/ reference. Trust me I work there, I am an intern, I dont make shit, and here are 5 idiots who make BIG BUCKS-bleeding the station to line their pockets. They always ask for free stuff. Stupid ass listeners literally drive over to the station with trunk fulls of free stuff. These guys DO NOT need any perks. BVTW Mr. John 'Cakes' Auville has this reputation for being the nice guy. He is a hateful asshole. Lurch is nice. JP will actually take time and talk to listeners. EB is full of EB. If that guy could fuck himself he would. Brett is a fucking Philistine, and uncultured slob. He would not know elegance or good taste if it jail sexed him. If you bring these guys gifts or free stuff, you're an idiot. Trust me, as soon as you leave the station, they are quick to goof on your good nature, and figure out how to leech a buck out of what you just gave them. I am so sick of being around The Fan. Thses people here make me realize that most people feel self-entitled, are two face, and would slit your throat for a farthing.

I'd love to hear this intern rip them on the Junkies on Monday. But isn't the "free stuff" the Junkies get essentially in exchange for free plugs on the show? I mean, I'm sure Bonefish and the Palm come out on top at the end of the day. If you're saying they get even more free stuff than they talk about, then I think I'd like to see a list. Can't wait for the King of Ashburn tour.

Whether or not these guys are doing anything wrong (if they are doing it) comes down to the station's policy. If the items are meant as giveaways to listeners as part of a sponsorship, that could be an issue. But if people want to give shit to the Junkies as gifts and they turn around and sell it, that is different. However, if the Junkies promote Bonefish and the Palm because they get free food and those restaurants aren't paying for advertising, the management at WJFK is fucking retarded, policy or not, for letting it happen.

I'm talking about CDs, books sent by authors, publishers... bluetooth devices, electronics...
They would sell the green room furniture or the stand-up arcade game that was in there if they could.

Slit your throat for a farthing
(phrase) - Someone so evil they would cut you for a farthing. Cats are often guilty of this

It was a Phil Hendrie refernce I think?
Only the OP knows fer sure...

A farthing (derived from the Anglo-Saxon feorthing, a fourthling or fourth part[1]) was an English coin worth one quarter of a penny, 1/960 of a pound sterling. Such coins were first minted in England in the 13th century, and continued to be used until 31 December 1960 when they ceased to be legal tender.

If these guys are doing it, they are being pretty blatant about it. It doesn't sound like the station gives a shit. WJFK probably doesn't want that shit lying around, gathering dust. Especially the crappier stuff.

The fact is most of the stuff ending up at WJFK or any radio station is expected to end up in the trash or someone's pocket anyway. You are really making something your business that isn't your business at all.

I personally wouldn't do it and I wouldn't want my "highly paid" on-air talent doing it, either. If I were the manager of the station, I would throw away the crap and keep the best stuff for prize drawings for the employees.

That said, if this doesn't violate station policy, I don't understand what the issue is. It's not illegal, immoral or, based on the station's indifference, not unethical by WJFK's standards.

hey intern your going way to far, if you don't think people like Howard Sterin get free shit your dreaming. o and by the way he makes 500 million a year. It's really pretty simple, these guys came up with a very simple radio show with there buddys (simple) who cares how much they make or what free shit they get. All jobs have perks and if you are in the DC area you'd better make at the least 150,000 a year.If they have a big ego or are dicks then don't deal with them, go find a walmart job. Trust me if the Junks were not making CBS $$$ they would be gone. And if you don't understand this then you'll never make it. so go to 7-11 and eat lunch while the rest of us go drink some beer at the palm and laugh about your poor ass.

Ok since I'm wanted and my time is short, I'll give you a run down of the talent there from my experience, your mileage may vary.

Ms. Receptionist. Very nice lady, talks on her cell all the time. Concerned about the state of her nails. I love ya B/

Bear. Nice guy. Solid, genuine. Works with a smile. Would never do a softshoe on Main wearing spats dancing with a parasol and a toothy grin.

JP, serious guy. I think is intensity may be mistaken for being somewhat snobbish. Seems to have a lot on his mind. Least appreciated of the 4, but does most of the heavy lifting for the other 3. Cares about the show.

Jason B.- jock sniffer from way back. The boy loves his sports. He can be curt, and somewhat gruff. Would phone it in if he could. Would not want to be in a lifeboat scenario with the guy. Degenerate gambler. Big on getting what he can, when he can get it. Likes high profile cronies. God knows what his home life is like.

Cakes. Aloof, likes to work on his vocabulary. Speaks in an annoying staccato cadence. Most likely to actually employ that absurd pidgin they speak in to the point of grating. Cheap. His dark side vibes nasty. The type that would smile as he turns the knife and twists. Cheap. Most likely (close with EB though) to use Maxim magazine to guage what is hip. Most likely has the most stable home life.
Not as intellegent as he thinks. Cakes, you were at the right place at the right time, and fate smiled upon you. Count your blessings.

EB. Selfish. K-mart taste with Nieman Marcus wallet. No wonder he is think with OliveriA (yes I know you hate that Brett). Like to think he is somewhat cultured. Most likely to misuse a word. Can be affable, but always leaves you wondering of his sincerity. Trash taste. Would dump Sports format in a heartbeat. You can take the boy out of P.G.... Another cat who should be thanking God every 5 seconds.

Brett. Uh. Borderline Aspberger's... dense as spent uranium. Has as many get rich schemes as Ralph Kramden. Deviant. Most likely to enjoy scat. Would be a social embarrassment in a NASCAR infield meet-n-greet. Thinks hipness can be bought. Star-fucker, hung up on trash culture. Perhaps cloned from Bickle's DNA. Those 2 should marry. Fancies himself a ladies man. Another lucky boy. Destined for a low level Public Works gig if not for hitting the fate pick six.

Mike Wise. Surprised his ego fits in the building. Has this delusion that he has street cred. Anothe rguy who wants you to think that in his past he had to beat pussy off with a stick. This vibe of Lady Killer runs riot through the station. Wants to be Tony K., and you can tell he covets K's Q rating.

Wise's Minion-all yes men. Mike says something and they all agree. During the snowstorm one of those idiots was gabbing it around the station about borrowing his mommy's car, and actually went on the air sounding like it was OK to drive around when the police were telling people to stay home. I think it was CJ, I heard it second hand. Bunch of idiots who take up too much room.

Matt Cahill (drab)... nice guy who takes a lot of shit. Under appreciated. Most likely to help a stranger and tell no one about it.

Chad Scisson Dukes. Charismatic. Huge ego despite claiming otherwise. Steals O&A material- has a Jim Norton complex. Sexual degenerate. Would stick it any hole that radiated a little heat. Actually nice to his fans. I have a feeling the Junkies are surprised how his star has risen, and a couple resent it. Nothing is as pat on the back friendly as they would have you think. Chad is in all a nice guy. Complex individual. Most likely to go through several divorces. Can't imagine living with the cat.

Arrington. What you hear on air is close to reality. You can tell he is used to getting his way. Ego. Big. He should listen to Springsteen's 'Glory Days'. More upset by Portis than he copped to. Despite trying to make you think otherwise, vulnerable in that he is very careful of the public persona he cultivated and is desperate to maintain. I have a feeling his greatest fear is becoming a footnote in NFL history.

Kushner. Nicest guy at the station.

....

If you want more, let me know. I have to stop now.

Kevin BDK...
Poster boy for DSM-IV. Grates. The only way to silence him when he rolls would be with a heavy object. Thinks he is Ebert. Desperate for approval. Breath rancid, body odor pronounced. Insecure. Perhaps repressed sexually. OCD palpable. Shit taste in film, fancies himself an undiscovered Francios Truffaut, or Jean Luc-Goddard. Most likely to secretly play with his feces.

Why would he be worried about becoming a footnote in NFL history? He already is one even among retired Skins and he's done playing. He was a great athelete in his day and a likable player but even among Redskin linebakers he rates well below the likes of Neil Olkewicz, Monte Coleman, Wilber Marshall or Ken Harvey.

A little to rambling and inarticulate for a broadcasting career as well.

LaVar Arrington is already a footnote in NFL history. Twenty years from now, he will be known as the guy who gave Troy Aikman his last concussion. No shame in that, but hardly Canton-bound.

I've never met the Junkies, but I have to say, what you write not only seems believable but it's entertaining as all hell. Your slams are on point and absolutely crushing. Bravo.

The question I have is if you're as sharp witted in person as you are in print, because I don't doubt they'd have you on the show to say it 'to the face', so to speak. Just be prepared for the way JP (who you point out is the creative force for this show) will want to address this, if at all.

Also, I disagree with whoever said this is a bad career move for a 19/20 year old intern. While I'm a little confused as to why she is so angry, I think handling this situation is better experience than filling Cakes' water bottle.

for some reason, I really find this fascinating. If there's other details/info you have but don't want to post in this message board, please email them to me at helpmehero@gmail.com. Good luck!

First, I'd like to thank everyone who took the time to say thanks for the post.

If you think it was inaccurate, again the observations were from first hand impression through experience. I could be completely wrong.

But, I do give you this for thought:

The Junks Get emails, and have their own message board where people post their opinions all the time. This is the first post that they elected to read on the air. The fact that JP did it is quite telling. Jp does not get the credit he deserves for steering that ship. In way, it was vindication for JP to read it, because he saw the truth in my post, as I gave him the credit he knows he would not get otherwise. Listen to the podcast and notice how defensive Brett gets. Taken aback that someone would dare rock the ego-based world that they reside in. Cakes rests on this notion of him being 'the nice guy', when it is far from true. EB and Lurch do as little as possible to further the profile of the show. The Junkies are suffering from complacency, as they think that they are the high watermark for the station... The laziness is beginning to show. They could take a lesson from Chad Dukes on how to build and maintain an image.

Thanks again all for reading my little posting. My impetus was born from just the day to day garbage I see at the fan. I look at other folks who struggle to make ends meet day to day. Just watching these really financially successful people try to line their pockets with promotional items, books etc. just made me take pause and wonder when enough is enough.

Which segment of Friday's show were they reading your post? Looking at their podcast list there are 13 segments, and I don't want to listen to 4 hours of them complaining about how poor they are.

Listened to it. Two observations. The WJFK podcast quality sucks ass. Why do I hear static on the fucking thing? WTF?

Second, this is proof that these jackasses follow what is written here. The Junkies do, and so do O'Meara and company.

Seriously, do they have that much going on in their lives that they can't spend a few minutes a day here seeing what people are saying about them?

Hey Cakes. I was close enough to you to flick that cap off your bald head. Your stupid chuckle is driving me insane. Do you have to giggle after every sentence you utter? And could you stop going "AWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW..." as a preface to your mundane ramblings?
EB, when are you and Brett going to tie the knot? You two are like a couple of schoolgirls. I am waiting to see you guys hold hands and skip down the hallway upstairs by the war room. EB if you knocked Brett up, you guys would have a cute baby: a thigh with gray hair.
Lurch, do you ever bet with "T" on how fast you can make your daughters cry?
JP, I think 4 more inches in height would have made you much more mellow. Kudos on the book Napoleon. Do you ever feel like you are the only reason the show has legs? You should.
What do you guys think of Chad? Does it bother you that a former stalking intern is outgunning you professionally? Say what you will about Mr. Scisson, but that guy is a professional.
Lavar, 3 words: Hooked on phonics.

CBS is probably paying $1 mil+ for those four idiots, who live in 16th place. On the other hand, Kane is constantly in the Top 5 and I would be surprised if his salary was as much as one of the Junkies. Hell, the Junkies trail Ballard on Big 100.3! Do you think Ballard makes more than $150K?

If you are reading this, Junks, you ought to keep your resumes updated. CBS would be out of its mind to renew your contract. You have had nearly five years to do something in the ratings and you have done shit. You should have remained on mid-days and weekends getting $50K each, or whatever they were paying you.

I understand that Mike is investing in a studio expansion to accommodate The Junkies when they finally lose their show...

I listened to that podcast. First - like WTL wrote, that static is annoying. Are they broadcasting on an AM station? Real fucking professional. Second - you can tell that they were a little "bitter" and that the thread/post got under there skin. How much do you want to be they're going to try and sniff that intern out and make his life hell for the semester?

I hope they're saving whatever money they're making.

Doug Mutie was better than you.

Second, while they may be 16th overall, they are most concerned with their demographic ratings... young males. 75 percent of their audience is men and those ratings take population as a whole... 16th isn't a big deal if they are leading in their niche.

My guess is the Junkettes went away when the format changed. They are no focused solely on sports hence the name change to the "Sports Junkie's".

Although I think its interesting that they still refer to themselves as the junkies yet the station promo's all refer to them as the Sports Junkies.

My guess is they move on whenever their contract is up. They want to be broader than sports and still are for the most part. (i.e. they still do entertainment, movies, pop culture etc.).

JFK will give Lavar or Brian Mitchell the morning show and the Junkies will end up on another station.

Because we all know that hot chicks and sports don't mix. It's not like the Dallas Cowboys have cheerleaders or anything or that you see Swedish bikini models on beer ads.

My guess is they will have no choice but to move on whenever their contract is up. They are too expensive and bring too little to the table. As for another gig at another radio station, good luck with that.

LaVar sucks. I can see B-Mitch, but if CBS wants to be serious about a sports station in this town, they need to poach the guys from the Sports Reporters on WTEM. They are the real deal.

In fairness, his kids probably have Spring Break this week. I can't fault him for that (if that's why he took off).

EDIT: Actually, if his kids are in the Loudoun County system, it looks like they don't have Spring Break until next week. If that's the case and he has taken the week off without his family, that makes him kind of a douchebag.

This, among other things, shows that they don't take their gig seriously. But why should they? The hardest part of their job is getting up. I wish they'd put more effort into it, I listened a long time ago when they cared.

All these guys on WJFK sound bored. The Junkies and Wise are bad, but Lavar and Chad have turned into a major suck-fest. I mean, Chad comes up with the most asinine subjects for listeners to call and offer their opinion on. It's all based on speculation that isn't even remotely close to actually happening. It's shit like "Should the NFL force Snyder to sell the Redskins" or "Should the Redskins move back to RFK." I mean, why doesn't he just go for broke?

"Should the Wizards move back to Baltimore and change their name back to 'The Bullets.'"

Or

"Should Tiger Woods have a sex change operation so he will be less likely to cheat?"

Or

"Should George Foreman try MMA?"

I mean, c'mon!

I actually like Lavar and Dukes more than any other show. I used to be an avid junkies listener but have grown tired of them. Whoever wrote that they seem bored is right on. It's like they don't care about the show and if they don't then neither do I.

As for Lavar, he is far more articulate than Brian Micthell. I need an interpretor when that dude's on the air...He's almost in the John Thopmson category. But Lavar is ok although doesn't know much about sports other than football. While I prefered Chad in the old format, I think he's ok in this gig even though he's still growing into it.

For sports Czaban is the best in town, they need to give on on washed up atheles and have hosts that are witty and know sports.

That's my issue with Dukes. Compared to Czaban, Dukes sounds like a fucking idiot. The Sports Reporters run circles around everyone in town, but it is especially noticeable with Lavar and Chad because they are going head-to-head with them.

Elliot sucks. But The Junkies have never been a Top 10 show...ever. In any day-part. Saying they are the best thing since Howard Stern is like saying the Jason Alexander Nutri-System commercial is the best thing he's done since Seinfeld.

This reminds me of back when Chad Dukes would read posts from the "No Schtick Zone" and rage against some random fans. But now, it's an intern! It would appear that our illustrious thread starter actually became an intern at The Fan not because his goal in life was to become Othello or Blue Shorts or Landfill or Sven Lloyd or Beau Schembeckler or any other of the flunkies that populate that station.

Speaking of which, hey Inside Ex-intern guy, what about some of those second and third-tier guys I just mentioned. How are they in real life?
