Getting back to the original point, Trump serves out the rest of his term. Republican insiders convince Trump not to run again and in return they will prevent Trump from being convicted in the Senate. Without assurance of at least 60 Senators Pelosi holds back on impeachment and instead pursues investigation options. In November 2019 VP Pence announces he is exploring the option of ramming for President sending the first clear signal that Donald Trump is out. By that point Ted Cruz has already also announced a run and Kasich announces soon afterwards.
