This dirtball gets released this year and I don't like it. He raped and killed a 6 year old girl kidnapping her at a Christmas party and doing this evil act. Where he put the body is the 20 million dollar question. He received a 30 year sentence and has served almost 30 years.

He should totally get out. After 30 years, its extremely unlikely that he will repeat that crime. Still, just to be safe, if you have a 6 y.o. daughter, don't invite him to your Christmas party.

Actually he was sentenced to 50 years and was supposed to remain behind bars until 2041. However, on June 22, 1993, a Virginia appeals court overturned Hughes’ conviction for intent to molest, meaning he could end up resentenced on charges of abduction alone.

Sure enough, a Washington Post interview with Tammy from 1999 referred to a 2013 release date for Hughes. It’s not clear what happened with the plan to spring Hughes in 2013, but as of 2018, he was still incarcerated in Fairfax County’s Augusta Correctional Center as inmate number 1058054.

A state of Virginia website lists a “release date” of August 2, 2019 for him. Whatever Hughes did to mess up his scheduled 2013 parole, let’s hope he does it again.

If he was arrested circa 2000+ he would be FREE now with the NPR shows, Netflix docs and innocence project!

Big article on the front page today about the case and his release date in August. Not sure what to think. Did he kidnap and kill Melissa Brannon? Probably in my opinion. Should he be released? No in my opinion.

I think the FCPD might have set him up. The case got a ton of publicity and the cops scrambled to find a scapegoat.

They found fibers of Melissa and her mom Tammy Brannon's in his car. He did hug both of them at the party so that is his explanation. He left the party at 11pm and wasn't home until 2am. He lived 15 minutes away. Circumstantial evidence. Where was he? He washed his clothes when he got home at 2am. Weird. He was on probation for auto theft for 5 years. He served 1 year in jail. Too bad they couldn't get him to confess during interrogation process on where her body is and what happened. Is Caleb Hughes the monster that would kidnap 5 year old from a Christmas party and then kill her? Maybe or maybe not. By the way, Peter Greenspun was his Lawyer during the trial.

The party was 8 miles away from Caleb Hughes house yet his wife said there was 50 miles on the odometer. Caleb said he went to get beer after the party. I feel that our Justice system got this case right. Robert Horan was a great Prosecutor who was always fair and consistent much like Ray Morrogh is now. It is a darn shame that her body or clothes were never found over that 20-25 mile radius that Hughes took Melissa and killed her.

30 years in prison is a long time but not long enough for this guy. Wouldn't you think at least one prisoner knows something about what really happened that night being around Mr. Hughes for 30 years? I was in law school when this case was being tried in 1991. We followed the trial closely. Most of our class believed Caleb Hughes was involved in the disappearance of Melissa Brannon. A clear majority would have voted Not Guilty on a charge of kidnapping based on the evidence presented. Nobody would have voted guilty on kidnapping with intent to defile. The evidence just wasn't there.

An explanation that I think is far more consistent with the evidence is that Melissa Brannen didn't leave the complex premises alive. When she returned to get chips an attempt was made to lure her away. Melissa resisted. The would be abductor panicked and killed her. Possibly it is murder in the course of an attempted kidnapping. More accurately it is murder in the course of attempted statutory rape.

Hughes probably didn't pay for Greenspun's representation. In the early 1990s Peter Greenspun was the go to court appointed defense attorney for high profile cases.

If you have read about all the details of the case you would know that Hughes was hitting on several woman at the party and was acting real aggressive towards woman and they all denied his advances. He was mad so he abducted the little girl and after that he did things to her that I don't want to imagine. But he is guilty in my opinion. He washed his clothes when he got home. He cut the soles of his shoe and Melissa's DNA was in his car.

You raise some great points! Hughes should have communicated with Greenspun and should have spoken up more. To say Bob Horan did a dishonest job is absurd. The state has the evidence and brought Hughes to trial. Ask Greenspun what happened

Caleb Hughes gets released this Friday. He will be given two sets of street clothes, a new pair of shoes and 245 dollars in cash. He has no probation restrictions so he will truly be a free man. There is a pretty good chance that this guy is really innocent. The FCPD had to pin this on someone and they don't care if he was really guilty or not.

Hughes was never convicted of murder, He was convicted of abduction. The commonwealth attorney knew that Hughes would be acquitted if they tried him for murder.
Under Virginia law before the abolition of parole, there are four classes of “good conduct allowances.” For particularly exemplary prisoners, 30 days of credit is given for every 30 days served, meaning a prisoner could cut their sentence in half. Hughes will have served 29 years and 7 months of his 54 year sentence.
If he did kill the little girl he is not going to give any details because double jeopardy protection does not apply in this case as the murder charges were either dropped or never filed.

We all agree he abducted her and she was never found. So basic logic says that if he was the last person to be with her than he knows what happened to her. I would like to retry him when he gets home. He will be watched 24-7.

I read about this case and someone suspected that Hughes handed the girl off to a child sex trafficking criminal for cash or the promise of a future payment. Either way Hughes is a scumbag who truly deserves life in prison at the very least.

Why? He was the last one seen with the little girl. He was no where to be found for 2 hours. Lied to police. Failed a lie detector. Had her fibers and blood in his car.

It has been a while, but there was no evidence that Hughes was last seen with the girl. The story was that Melissa was leaving with her mother, went back to get something and was never seen again.

This murderer, pedophile, piece of shit is getting released from Dilwyn prison tomorrow at 5 in the morning. He should have gotten a life sentence. Where is going to live? I think the public has a right to know.

The American justice system is not perfect but it is one of the best in the world. We will see if he shows up on the sex offender registry. Since he was only convicted of abduction he may not be required to register.

I think there may be a chance that this guy was innocent. He was never charged with murder and there probably is good reason for that. He did his time so he should be left alone.

What the evidence was in the Hughes trial and what people think it was are not the same.

The FBI participated in the search of Hughes house and car. Tissues from the car were submitted to FBI Labs for testing. A serology test concluded the substance on the tissue was blood, that Brannen could have been the source, but based on blood type so could 40% of the population. A separate DNA test was done on the tissues. This test concluded Brannen was not the source of the blood on the tissues. Horan's office played up that luminol disclosed blood in the car and on the shoes, and Horan called the FBI expert to testify to the results of the serology test on the tissues, and this is what people remember. They don't remember another FBI expert testified that the DNA test said the blood found could not have come from Brannen, or that experts disputed whether the substance elsewhere in the car and on the shoes was blood protein.

One human hair with an appearance similar to hair found on Brannen's brush was found on the drivers side floor mat of Hughes car. An expert testified the hair could not be identified as Brannen's hair to the exclusion of anyone else. No similar hairs were reported as found on the passenger seat. Two rabbit hairs were found on the passenger seat of Hughes' car that were found to be similar to hair on Brannen's mother's coat.

What was found which reasonably could be tied to Brannen was 51 fibers some of which were from an outfit Brannon was wearing, which a prosecution expert said were the result of a primary transfer from Brannen to the seat rather than a secondary transfer from Brannen to another source and then to the seat. Was the expert correct? Based on the prosecution narrative the rabbit hairs were at least a secondary transfer.

Horan belittled Hughes claim that he went to buy beer after the party. The usual timeline is that Hughes' wife had driven the car the day before. Hughes then drove it to and from the party, arriving home late. The next day Hughes wife drove the car to her work and turned it over to the police there. Hughes wife has been presented as having fully cooperated with the police. There was another person known to the prosecution who claimed to have seen Brannen on the Metro the day after she disappeared. That person followed up with the police several times. The police dismissed this sighting as not credible and the prosecution failed to turn over the potential witness's name to the defense attorney. One of the appeals judges specifically stated "Not only is this evidence exculpatory and material, but the trial judge had ordered that lead sheets of this type be disclosed. Just as it is not the province of this Court to determine the credibility of witnesses, it is not the Commonwealth Attorney's role to unilaterally determine that Mr. Cobb's information is unreliable."

None of this means that Hughes was innocent. It does mean he was not clearly guilty.

Hey the man had his day in court and he has served his time. I think he might be guilty of more than just abduction but I have no proof of that so we got to go with what our legal system decided.
Caleb Hughes is listed on the Virginia sex offender registry last time I checked it had his home and work address but you better leave the man alone or you could find yourself in prison.

Some people speculated that he might have handed off the girl to someone who took her far away via the interstate highway. I feel really bad for the mother who never found out for sure what happened. He was at Augusta and while that could have happened a time or two it is rare. They have no industry there and other than food service and janitorial tasks the convicts do not work. They are locked down most of the time. When they are on the move they are closely watched and only a small group of prisoners are moved at a time. I recently met Caleb at work. Completely flabbergasted when I first saw him. I'm a crime show, mysteries type person. And he stuck out like a sore thumb. Hey yeah I know... Trust me I'm sick!! My kids are not allowed anywhere near the cafe anymore. I always just bring it home now. I haven't confirmed in my husband just yet because that's my livelihood.and honestly I want to find away to get him fired or at leat leave. Today at work he was quiet to start off with and was real smart ellec about minor stuff. He pisses me off daily. And YES of course I went straight to the owner. Apparently she has talked with his PO. And everyone deserves second chances. Then I told her No ma'am he's a murderer. When I told her the entire story she was like how do you know. I said I'm a forensic freak she has been on edge every since. They all were like how did you find out this type info!! Honestly she's desperate for help and their thought process is he's a good dude. Me I'm just hoping n praying for a slip up of some sort. Like I said he like to talk sometimes. About his dad and his ex wife and how he just met his son. And northern VA but won't say where. If forensics DNA is ever needed I can get it. His cup sits right beside the dishwasher, actually in a weird spot! I'm serious guys I don't want anything bad to happen to anyone else. Yup. I kinda got a taste of the real Caleb today. He basically threatened me. He doesn't like authority at all. It's starting to get a little scary, I left work early! He tries to be intimidating for real and non confrontational but you have to have good ears!He mumbles shit and throws fits until he's had enough then he explodes. I completely agree 100%. If you can catch my comment up above it states that I have already warned everyone and even the owner. It's almost as if she is so desperate that she is allowing him to stay. I work yesterday for Mother's Day and he was extremely nice and bought all of us flowers. I am not letting up my guard whatsoever and I plan to protect myself to the fullest extent if he tries something. I am trying to do this the legal way. So I've been trying to research as to how I can help the situation as well as get him out of there.... I am well within my rights to discuss anything pertaining an employee that works side-by-side with me that it did not even disclose his situation. And I've also stayed there before that I will not try to do anything illegal to jeopardize myself going to jail or even being wrong about the situation. In which I know I am not wrong. You don't work with him side by side you don't see him everyday and apparently you have never met him. So how are you to determine the harassment that he is endured. He has not endured any harassment whatsoever and if you talk to him blatantly he's very adamant about what he says and there is absolutely no remorse for anything. A sex offender is allowed to work but that is why he or she is on the sex offender registry in which Hughes and your restaurant is on so people who come to your restaurant are fully aware that Hughes works there.
