Freight charge on cars in the D.C. area

How often do dealerships waive this charge to make the sale. More or less than 50% of the time? $1000 freight charges on new cars sounds ridiculous when the dealerships are transporting the cars to their lots regardless.

If you're trying to negotiate individual line items like that, then you're doing it wrong.

Always negotiate the bottom-line, out-the-door price. However they get to that on their side for their purposes, you don't care. Freight, advertising fees, undercoating, mats, whatever... It's all irrelevant when you're working on the basis of a final number.

And make sure that they don't try to add shit back in during the last sit-down with the finance guy.

As with most things, it comes down to how you voted.

If you voted republican, you voted for a NAZI system that
makes it impossible for you to just buy a car directly from the factory.

Republicans put the dealership system in place and made it law.

My name is Maximus Decimus Meridius. Commander of the armies of the North, general of the Felix Legions, loyal servant to the true emperor Marcus Aurelius. Father to a murdered son, husband to a murdered wife, and I will have my vengeance in this life or the next.

"sit-down with the finance guy"?

You were doing so well until you threw that in.

Looks like you get ripped off too.

Death of a Salesman nailed it, except with the finance part. I can sell you a car, I will pay your sales taxes, freight charges and I'll even throw in free oil changes for life. Kicker is I'm charging you $5k extra for the car, so you're still getting ripped off.

Why would you ever buy a new car in the D.C. area? Ill drive down south to NC or something drive it back up and save 5 to 10k.

You'll always sit down with the finance guy to finalize the deal and do the paperwork. Salesmen don't do that. Whether you choose to finance and through them or not is an entirely different matter. Sometimes makes sense, sometimes doesn't. If they're letting you use their money for free for 5 years, then I'll take that deal.

But they'll sometimes try to slip things back in or structure it to get some back at that point. Game remains the same. Bottom line number shouldn't change.

You've been duped.

I've bought dozens of cars and NEVER, EVER sat down with the finance guy. Sometimes there's a "title gal" that prints my paperwork.

You are a damn fool to be sitting there letting them have at you for round two, but hey - advice is great over the internet.

You're trying too hard Cletus.

Whether you call it the finance guy, or business office, or manager, or a "title gal" the role is the same. No, you didn't just have a "title gal" print things up and walk out the door. Other than at a third-world lot selling auction junk, you're going to have to deal with someone beyond the dopey salesman to finalize the deal and you'll sit down and walk through the sales agreement and the rest of the pile of paper.

The point being don't let them change the deal at that point. That's typically where the dealer fees and all of the rest of that crap gets slipped in as "standard practice." Which you probably just said "Oh, OK" and paid. lol

All my deals get done on the internet. Congrats for feeling better about yourself for getting some free floor mats and undercoating. The dealers love you I'm sure. LMAO.

On my last new car they charged me $500.00 for TruCoat. They said they could not take it off because it was installed at the factory.

On every car I have ever bought through a dealer I had to sit down and talk with the finance guy, usually a moderately attractive middle age woman. The conversations were always short:

Her: We need to discuss finance options. We have

Me interrupting: I can write a check to pay for this car. Unless you are going to guarantee me no interest financing for at least three years without running a credit report, then I am not interested.

Her: We will have to run a credit report regardless.

Me: Then I will pay with cash. Give me the final figure and I will bring the payment by tomorrow and pick up the car and title and you can give me a receipt.

Her: That won't be necessary. I guess we will not need to run a credit check then. Let me tell you about our insurance options.

Me: I purchase my car insurance through a broker who covers my cars, my home and my business. Here is a fax showing they will cover this car for the next thirty days. I am not interested in getting separate insurance just for this car.

Her: Thank you for your time then. The title work should be ready in about 15 minutes.
