You have no fucking idea what you are talking about. North of King and East of Washington for several blocks is the heart of Yuppidom. You have to go considerably north of King before you run into low cost housing, and most of that is west, not east of Washington. There were some areas on and west of Route 1 north of King that saw some police activity in the 1990s, but it has been quieter in recent years. The problem zone is farther west.

The opposition towards black residences in northern Old Town is driven by developers who want to buy the land cheap.

When in started working at my current firm five years ago, I learned one of the partners owned a home right on Union street literally on the waterfront and had lived there since the 70’s. I commented that it must be amazing to live in such an affluent and historically important part of Alexandria to which he commented that it not always had been so. He told me that there was a rough patch around the mid 80s up to the early 90’s when violence was rampant and he had to call the police to come pick up a guy who got shanked in the street and collapsed on his front porch one time.
