Tax cuts are a loser

According to the latest Wall Street Journal poll, just 27% of Americans overall view the new tax law as good idea, while 36% see it as bad idea.

47% of the public doesn't pay taxes. 80% of the public believes in ghosts or UFOs and most of them think the earth is flat.

You are just as intelligent as the dimwitted masses if you think "public poll numbers" are the way to manage anything.

Your data are as fucked up as you are. Polling is a science. One that is plainly far over your head. GOP has been counting on the magic of "a few extra dollars" in people's pocket to offset the rest of the Trump shit-show. It's turning out however that people know that they got next to nothing, and that those trillion-dollar deficits are all going into the pockets of great big corporations and the already very wealthy. It's pissing them off.

By "next to nothing", you mean the average extra $1,000 per year that even the lowest income people would realize that Hillary described as "not even worth doing".

$1,000 is nothing to a limo libtard, but it's something to hard working Americans that appreciate it.

And your survey is a joke. The question was probably phrased this way;

"President Trump's tax cut is going to plunge the country into horrible debt and only the very richest people will get any benefit while the middle class and poor people will become slaves and be far worse off in the very near future. Given this reality, do you think the tax cut was a good idea?"

Yeah, we understand how that works.

You won't see the true cuts until you file next year. This was the last year of the Obama tax plan.

It'll piss people off even more when the ridiculous Repooplicans start to claim that they need to raid Social Security and Medicare in order to cover the deficits that they just created with their unbalanced tax bill.

Take stuff from the masses and give it to the fat cats again? Not this time, GOP!

WRONG. The stat is that 47% do not pay FEDERAL INCOME tax. They still pay sales tax and many of them pay property taxes, Some of them pay state income taxes. That 47% figure isn't a fixed population. A significant number of those not paying Federal income taxes now have paid them in the not to distant past, or will pay them in the not too distant future. Also not all of that 47% is poor. Some are just very good at getting the tax code to work to their advantage.

If polling is so "scientific" how the Hell did Hillary lose the election? Pollsters must have been using astrology on that one..

When the weatherman says that there's a 0% chance of rain and there's a deluge that washes away your hopes and dreams in a flood of butthurt, they did screw up.

Tax cut will probably suck for me. Have to wait and see though.

The tax cut gave me more back on my paycheck but now that is more I will have to report. Hoping the increase in Standard Deduction will help. My itemized deductions last year was $10K.

Depends largely on who you are around here, but generally:

1) If you're a renter, there is a very good chance you don't itemize. If so, that higher standard deduction will be nice, especially if your income gets you in the 22% or up brackets. Ironically, this is great for many H1-B immigrants, who Trump hates, because they are much more likely to rent than own.

2) If you're married and make good upper middle class income, the child tax credit might be there for you where it wasn't in past years. It used to start phasing out at $110k, now the phase out starts at $400k. And it just doubled to $2k per kid.

3) Likewise, tax rates are lower all around. A bunch of middle upper class income makers who had been paying taxes as 28% for some of their income will now be paying 24%. Rates went down for everyone, but the more you make, the more raw cash this saves.

4) If you own a business and get qualified business income, all of it under $300k gets at least a 20% deduction. and non-service businesses have that scale out.

5) If you have a loaded 401k, all the corporate tax cuts will help it.

Lots of potential pluses, but yeah, limits on property tax deductions and mortgage interest will pinch some people hard.

All people are seeing now is changes in the withholding tables. That’s very different from a change in the actual tax that you owe.

Anyone can figure out how much tax they will owe, give or take. It's all right there in the Law. If you were on the standard deduction without kids on a regular wage, the withholding changes likely capture things well for you. Itemizers might need or want to tweak the exemptions they have on their W4.

Politically, the new Law can be though to sell. If you are a single person in middle America renting and earning $30k, maybe you pay $600 less is taxes a year. So an extra $12 in your pocket a week. Is this person going to come out to the polls and vote for Trump for that. Maybe, maybe not.

Meanwhile, lots of upper middle class people in swing States could suddenly face sharply higher tax bills, especially if they bought a large house. Some may have voted for Trump. They may not do so in 2020.

So if you "run the numbers", you might be better off, you might be worse off, or you might break about even. That's reassuring.

There are of course some people who will most definitely be much better off -- like Donald Trump and everyone related to him.

Remember when he said, “This is going to cost me a fortune. This is not good for me.” Well, run the numbers on THAT!

Passive income landlords stand to rake in a huge 20% business deduction on their rental income. Hmmmmmmmm. Which current president owns lots of rental properties....

This whole presidency is a one big money grab... Exploit divisions. Get elected. Reward yourself. Reward the rich. Fleece the middle class and bleep the poor.

Seriously, the need to check an unstable president effectively is something a lot of people might want. As for the GOP list:

- Border Security (kinda a flabby issue at this point. Trump said Mexico would pay for it. Where's the $$$)
- Boom Economy (definitely better than a couple years ago, but underemployment is still very much a thing). Bottom line is the economy still isn't working for lots of people.
- Better Trade Deals (name one? We have tariffs now, not new trade deals)
- Infrastructure (Spend, Spend, Spend? Really. Which GOP candidate is actually hocking this)

As for the Democrats list, yeah, hating Trump is at the top of the list, but there is also:

- Tax Cut (rewarded the rich while you got shafted)
- Hostile to minorities (demonstratively true at this point)
- Environmental regulations that keep your family from getting sick being rolled back.
- Tariffs raising the prices you pay at the store.
- Unprecedented corruption

There is a ton of bad and just plain poorly thought out crap in the tax bill. The stupid GOP was more concerned that they could pass something than that it should be any good. All about face-saving after there string of other humiliations.
