There are maps and other aids available to assist weaklings in departing the area. We don't need them here and never have. As the man says...

Hit the road Jack, and doncha come back
No more no more no more no more.

But it certainly beats out places like Dumfries or Falls Church.

Where's the evidence of Constant events?

Why did Pacers Running Store, Panera Bread, Green Turtle, & McDonalds all Leave downtown Fairfax?

Let us look at your statement -

The McDonald's was razed to build mixed use housing, and there are several other locations in the city.

The Green Turtle is closing locations all over the U.S. and the chain is failing.

The busier location for Panera Bread is the location near GMU and if a location can't make a profit it should close.

As for Pacers, the merchandise was overpriced, and the selection offered was not the latest/current product offered by better online retailers.

So your argument in not valid, and you should stand mute.

Well silly boy if you think about it Vienna is almost the model we would like for the rest of the nation and ultimately globally. Vienna now has some very rich folks and those serving the very rich receiving meager compensation. Similar to Silicone Valley. Have you been there lately? It is AWESOME. We have those that have everything and those doing about 5 degrees better than say Mexico. So not a bad deal. We just need to figure out what to do with all of the dumb ass whiteys that cannot earn a great living because they don't like mowing my lawn in example. But Jorge does it nicely and with a smile.

Where are the constant events in DownTown Fairfax City?

The Constant events would have probably helped to keep the Restaurants profitable, but without constant events there chances for profit are slim.

Read the Yelp comments for some other real reasons why the restaurants are closed.

https://www.yelp.com/biz/panera-bread-fairfax-3 https://www.yelp.com/biz/mcdonalds-fairfax-9
https://www.yelp.com/biz/the-greene-turtle-sports-bar-and-grille-fairfax

I was wrong about Pacers. It seems like they did not Leave downtown Fairfax, rather they relocated from a highly visible street location to a partially hidden street Location.

What's not to like?

We lead the area in closed businesses, traffic, never ending construction, new condos that start at $400k and above, high taxes, homeless sleeping in the woods by Fairfax circle and taxes that are higher than most of Nova. Our businesses consist of motels, fast food joints, car dealerships. we are famous for our past Mayor spending time in the clink. plus we are trying to have the most traffic cameras per mile in the state.

Hard for other local areas to top a crackhead mayor who gets busted in a gay sex-for-drugs sting.

Fairfax is a nightmare of sprawl and rich assholes who love chain restaurants. It completely lacks character and is boring as hell. There are a few random gems if you dig deep. Old school type places. What normal person would stay forever here? Ugh.

Is Fairfax City perfect today. Hell no.

But it is changing. One reason some chains are closing... Legitimate local eats are horning in on their turf. Try DeClieu sometime. http://www.coffeedeclieu.com/

Is the local Safeway great? Hell no, but we're getting an upscale Giant in 2020.

Meanwhile, Daniels Run Elementary is getting a GT program and already has a maker space up and running. And if you buy into an older house, you can get a 0% renovation loan through a city program.

You can pay hundreds of thousands more to move into a hopefully proven neighborhood like Vienna or McLean, but if you are OK with living through improvements/construction while they happen, Fairfax City is a great value.

As the sign at Blake Lane and Lee Highway declares:

It must be true.

It's so hit or miss.

I'll be anxious to see if Patriots will survive in the new location (old RedZone/DeadZone space).

Chubby Squirrel will be opening in Courthouse Plaza. The micro brewer in the old Villa Mozart space seems to be doing well so far.

Senior Tequilas in the old Carlos O'Kellys, we'll see.

Fairfax City is in fact one of the locations scheduled for new section-8 housing. Construction on some seven thousand units I believe. That is in addition to the section carved out around the Vienna Metro which also has section 8 set asides. So, glad to hear you are enjoying the "new" city and am hopeful that the section-8 recipients will be well selected by county officials. Hate to see the area get run down by people that have no vested interest in their communities. This sort of community diversification usually results in introducing crime and unwarranted social issues within the community. Best of luck

IT is "BECOMING" for close to 10 years. The Anchor motel and Breezewood best represent Fairfax City. Now Paul VI will be home to more sprawl. Let put 100 townhouse and Condos off a side street...what could go wrong there..anyone think of the traffic, nope just tax revenue.

Please note the original subject said "Downtown Fairfax City", not "Route 50".

That said, what's this about "Paul VI"? We haven't heard of any new development there. Doesn't show up on the Land Use Plans: http://www.fairfaxva.gov/home/showdocument?id=630

Fairfax City is a tale of two towns.

1 A cluster of traffic lights along route 50.
2) Below route 50, some kick-ass parks and a resurgent downtown.

Yeah, route 50 needs work, but we're already seeing the seeds of that play out.

You are so right about the lights.

Now they want to add over 100 houses to Paul VI - depending on a traffic study. Guess who's paying for the study? The developer. I wonder how that study will turn out? Then they want to add more house and condos near Ted Britt at Kamp Washington. It is already gridlock ring rush hours. Both of these will be done deals.

I swear all of Fairfax counties lights are deliberately set up to impede traffic. The expanding redlight photo scam is one reason why.

I can believe that. It seems only logical to sync the lights that frustrating traffic must be a deliberate act.

Downtown Fairfax is a crapfest. Can you imagine someone ever taking a day trip or weekend just to see this pile of garbage? Banks, bail bonds, law offices, gutted old strip malls, and traffic lights. Blech!

We've come into downtown Fairfax City for years for the parades and special events (Chocolate Fest!). Now we live here. Are people going to take a weekend trip into downtown Fairfax City outside of the events? Maybe not, but who cares??? The city serves its residents very well. Hate the meal tax? Well, it pays for the best garbage collection ever. Leave anything out, and it'll be gone. Like parks? We have some of the best parks in the area.

Yeah, I don't see tourists making Fairfax City a stop. Don't care...

Fairfax County doesn’t have any working red light cameras. You must be thinking of Fairfax CITY.

Vienna is the mattress capital of NoVA, and Fairfax City is the bail bond capital. Each is an amazing draw for tourists.

Fairfax City's primary focus is serving residents, not tourists. I think that's wise.

Guess what; the courthouse being close is awesome. Administating an estate? It's really nice having it close by. Evicting a troublesome tenant? It's nice not having to drive 10 miles from other parts of the county for every filing and court date. Shucks, sitting in a courtroom listening to cases is educational and entertaining. The DMV mobile station also stops there often, and it is much much more convenient than any of the permanent locations.

We welcome tourists but aren't obsessed with getting them.

Yes, let's talk courthouse. What is next to that? Fairfax County detention Center. Funny how Fairfax County was happy to leave that in Fairfax City. I wonder why? Could it be because it next to Ardmore and Westmore,2 of the poorer sections if Fairfax City. It's a joy when an escape happens and the state County and city police go door to door warning residents. And let's not forget the helicopter.

The meals tax is therefore intended just to gouge residents? Nice!

Both the personal property and real estate tax rates are lower than Fairfax County. It all comes out in the wash.

Fairfax City loooks improved to me.

We often eat at Havabite - no real issue parking - FREE STREET PARKING IN FRLNT OR NEARBY - try getting that anywhere else!

Next - there is a nice park in the center of town - nice fountains, grassy area, well lit and plenty of places to sit. Very nice square.

Also the streets are lite by lanterns and the sidewalks are brick. It’s quaint.

Then close by you can dessert or coffee at
DeClieu, Woodys and another ice cream spot.

Or you can grab some very nice wine at the wine bistro

Or how about turning of the Electronic device and heading to its spacious library? Or maybe take a ride around GMU?

I am also impressed with the Ethnic food in downtown- Jamaican, UUYGHUR , Thai, Asian, Indian, Taiwanese etc.

Highside also has craft beer.

It’s really important to support these places. Becuase when you do - you keep the chains out and grow a sense of community - no matter where in the county you love.

Agreed. The local businesses need our support, and they generally provide products and services worth supporting.

Downtown is nice. Lots of events to get people out, whether it be Kidz Korner on Saturdays, or the concerts on Fridays. Top notch library and plenty of good restaurants. Even an old school comic book store.

Haven't tried the Chubby Squirrel brewery yet. Hoping to get there soon.
