Why does meritocracy have to be "morally justified"? Why is it not enough that it is pragmatic?

The mass of humanity performs based on fear of punishment or hope of reward. Take away punishment and reward and many will choose not to produce, or to produce at lower levels. A meritocracy appeals to the second motivation. It encourages people to perform at their highest level by rewarding them based on the results of that performance. Society in turn benefits from having everyone performing at their highest level.

There is an argument that we need enforced philanthropy not because we have a meritocracy, but because we don't have enough of one.

That's not what "Meritocracy" means.

Merit, as used in meritocracy, is a word from Roman University Law. It means law rules the day and merit has is due strength about that law.
