When & why did this area become so obsessed with youth sports?

Did not grow up in NOVA, but now having a kid about to play rev Sports it’s crazy how obsessed a lot of parents are in youth sports their kids participate in. Not good enough for the kid to play to have fun, for every sport you need to have a position coach/extra training or your kid will be stuck on the bench. When did this phenomena occur? Or has it always been this way in this area? Can’t believe how many flyers get stuck on my car for personal trainers/gyms for kids.

Probably about the time it became unsafe for children to play outside unsupervised.

About the same time white males became famous for being pedophiles.

And don't forget about the Catholic Church.

I was here in the Sixties and there was more of a youth sports obsession for males then than there is today. Frequently the activity was less formal and you competed in the same league as everyone else, at least until 12.

Sportsball - whether professional, amateur, or youth - has become the proxy of choice for white, middle class America identity. You see, it's illegal for white people in America to identify, organize, or otherwise associate as white Americans, so they have to do it through other, less satisfying, less productive, less effective ways. One of these is sportsball.

If whites were allowed to identify the way minorities are, they wouldn't waste so much energy and time on something as so pointless as sportsball.

Hate to break it to you but it's not this area. NOVA is pretty laid back compared to many places I know when it comes to kids sports. I have family and friends with kids in quite a few states across the US. It's crazy out there.

Growing up here in NOVA 40 years ago, we did and played everything. Soccer or football in the fall, basketball or hockey in the winter, soccer, lacrosse or baseball in the spring...and then riding our bikes all over the 703, unsupervised all summer long.

Nowadays, childhood is all about finding out what you're best at as quickly as possible...and then spending every fucking waking moment away from school doing that one and only activity.

Parents sometimes hire private trainers for their kids in a particular sport or pay for off-season practice clinics.

It's almost sick.

What happened to kids just playing, for fun, with kids in the neighborhood, where you really pick up the nuances of the sport and be creative instead of being told instructed and become robotic. I have crazy co-worker who has all 3 kids in some sort of private training with swing coach for baseball, specialized training for soccer (on top of the travel soccer practice) and trainer for football, yet she is always bitching about how tight funds are, no time to for herself, blah blah blah. If you’d just chill the f out and let kids be kids you wouldn’t be broke and tired from running around every night and weekend

It's crazy like this because there is a ton of money to be made convincing people that their kids are going to be recruited into college scholarships.

This should all blow over eventually, but I pity the people who flushed fortunes down the drain these last fifteen years or so.

All sorts of exciting technological and scientific things to be into these days and anyone with a wi-fi connection is privy to all of mankind's knowledge nearly instantaneously. People could be spending their time learning about space exploration, 3-d printing, AI, etc

but stupid people don't like thinking they like throwing balls through hoops and such

wealthy illegal aliens

when i was young many kids were not in sports BECAUSE THEIR PARENTS WOULD NOT PAY FOR GEAR / UNIFORMS ... very literally, quite common in 80's

the lifestyle these people, who called USA the devil live, is infamous

the government / non-government wage gap: infamous - the highest in history

my parents flipped for one sport (barely - the county began charging for xxxx and that was pretty much the end)

another sport i was in that required gear: i had to work for the money (was it 1/2?) and pay for it myself

There is really no open spaces for a pick up game of football or baseball. There are a few hoops but that's about it. The result is organized sports using county facilities where everything is scheduled and kids have to fight for playing time.

yea, and about 1% chance that these kids will get full-ride athletic scholarships. I'm getting my kids into chess instead which will pay much higher dividends for their academic career.

A smart man who isn't under the Jewish spell of sportsball.

Meanwhile all these other idiots are wasting their kids lives away, forcing them to practice a sport that will provide them ZERO advantageous in life. Do you know what the average wage of a professional soccer player in the US is? Maybe $100k/year. The average wage of a FA in a PE firm in NYC? $1m. But go ahead, stupid striver bourgeois suburban middle class whites - waster massive amounts of time and money on something that means ABSOLUTELY NOTHING. Idiots.
