Silver Diner, dirty and expensive
Posted by: urinal cake ()

So I get going to a diner - you get basic food for cheap and forget how clean it is or isnt. Silver diner is expensive. Plan to spend $20/person for lunch, dinner or breakfast. $80 for 4. Not bad if you are getting decent food but a diner that always smells like urinal mints and plays Whitney Huston loops for 3 hours. Come on.

Sweet Water is cheaper and cleaner and WAAAAAy better food. Even Matchbox is the same price with better food and much cleaner. How the fuck does Silver stay in business???

Silver Diner is a faux-Diner waste of time. It's a kids place actually. You don't need to be there.

It's not actually cheap, but the food and service are so good that I'm more than willing to pay.

Go to Denny's, at least you will get a full hearty meal with your $14. Grand Slams FTW. Dinner is not bad either.

IHOP = Denny's. Both pretty good for not much money.

It’s not a diner. It’s a chain restaraunt with a diner-theme.

I’d rather just go to the Cheesecake Factory to be honest.

OP, why do you care where people eat? Try to have a more positive outlook on life. If you find a nice place with good food at nice prices...come back and tell us about it.

Attempting to discredit a local chain that's been in business for 30 years now is really a waste of your time...and ours.

got you to reply didnt I? I wasnt 'discrediting' it I was critiquing it and asking a legit question - why would anyone pay 20 bucks a person to eat at a 'diner' and not a very good one at that. I got one possible answer - a fan said he liked the food quality. Im fine with that as an answer. Another guess would be the actual style of food and service. They offer diner menu with diner atmosphere. The service is good too.

Finally, I did mention 2 much better options. Matchbox and especially Sweetwater are the same or less money for much much better food, much much better atmosphere, much much cleaner. So rather than busting my balls why not adapt a better attitude and get in the game and offer your own suggestions?

Why not get a loaf of bread, a jar of peanut butter, and a case of cold Budweiser, and consume it in the parking lot of SFW?

Here's the thing...everybody KNOWS about Matchbox and Sweet Water. Dazzle us with your intellect and get us turned on to a restaurant NOBODY knows about, how about? It's a challenge, no question. NOVA is the land of upscale, over-priced burgers and chain-restaurant hell of the 8th ring. It's not exactly an epicurean's paradise out there.

I didn't break your balls before...I just made a simple request. Note my lack of profanity and anger...it's rare in these parts.

Impossible, with Yelp there are hundreds of reviews on any place with a door, a stove and a waiter. Why dont you start your own thread 'dazzle us with your knowledge of great restaurants no one else knows about' The title of this thread is 'Silver Diner, dirty and expensive' - I made good points to back that up. Why are you patting yourself on the back for not swearing? Its not as if that is some amazing feat. Why not provide something original or informative on your own accord rather than derailing this thread and offering noting but milquetoast critique.

Oh...you use Yelp to evaluate your dining choices? Anything else you have to say on this matter is pointless now.

I wasn't patting myself on the back. I was merely correcting the notion that I was metaphorically breaking someone's balls.

I think the first location was Potomac Mills area. It was the spot (1996) to eat around 2200 after a movie etc.

Food was good, servers really gave a shit etc.
Then, I went recently to Springfield mall, and it was shit. Portions were small, food tasted like food you give to residents at sunrise! No salt/flavor/ etc.
Also, the servers ride in from other areas to work, using metro.
Plus, I heard a lot of thugs eat there past 2200.
Stick to Denny’s.
Does that little Vietnamese server work at the Dennys in Fairfax city?
I would always request his booth!
He’s probably 60-ish by now! He used to work at Edsal road location back in the day.
Shit, I remember Denny’s used to sell beer by the pitcher!

other than nit picking you offer nothing of value to anyone. I suspect you are quite lonely in life. Why not turn over a new leaf and get in the game? Offer something of value to others rather than being repulsive? Let people in. What do you use to evaluate places where you might want to eat?

Never mind, I know you dont really do anything other than bust other peoples balls when they make observations or suggestions.

Silver Diner is NOT a real diner. The food arrives frozen at the various locations, and is microwaved after you order it.

To find a real diner you will need to get away from the Northern Virginia area.

Bob Giaimo, GM, did the same thing at the American Cafe restaurant in Georgetown - they would ship in precooked items in plastic bags from the main kitchen in Brentwood MD. It was then re-heated at the restaurant. Not everything but many things. Lots of pre-cooked stuff like chicken too. The idea was to assemble the food rather than cook it on the spot. This allowed for more uniform product and more important it allowed the business to cut costs by not hiring any real chefs just people that could re-heat and plate food.

If so they were "chefs", NOVA-LITE liberals would shuck out mega bucks for their cuisine and defend them on FUU

You want to see hot waitresses go to Hooters.

Silver Diner is just phony. It's like some Disneyland impression of an actual diner. That said, health inspectors do go there and they have "bug night" just like everybody else. It's expensive, however, only to the extent that you are trying to live off unemployment benefits.

Not the best FFX health dept report (looks like the Springfield location is the worst of the VA locations - no surprise).

Don't put so much stock in health inspection reports. Recall instead that the food editor of the Atlanta Journal-Constitution had the inspectors come in to check the kitchen she had just cleaned at home. It failed miserably.

I worked as a server for 7 years in college and after. Health inspections scratch the surface. The kitchen would scramble when the inspectors were around. Staff would try to correct violations in one area while the inspector was elsewhere. A good kitchen will have minor problems. In all honesty even slack kitchens were still pretty good. The real problems are with food storage and cross contamination. Often overlooked is the bar area.

The best indication of a kitchen is the whole restaurant. If the floors and counters and bathrooms are clean you are likely to have a decent kitchen. The best is if you can actually see into the kitchen.

As a server, you would have been told no more than what to scrub. Then you would have been cut for the day. Inspections are actually a key metric for managers, so they take them seriously in all their excruciating detail.
