Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
I have gotten a few requests to change the encoding for the scanner to be compatible with MACs. Apparently, the SPEEX encoding will work. I changed the stream to SPEEX this evening. So, if anyone is using a Mac and can now connect to the scanner please let me know.
Amazingly, its been up and running for a few years now with almost no interruptions. Lately, I've had a few people try to rebroadcast the stream (like to iPhones) and then charge for the service. Not that I have a fundamental problem with rebroadcasting but if they are getting it for free then there should be something in it for me since they are charging for their services. IMHO any legitimate business would contact the source to make sure its ok and negotiate a proper agreement. A couple of them now have.
The radioreference site is certainly an option. I've listened to it and found that it is a bit more limited in the channels they scan. It is also noisier. However, it definitely has a convenience factor going for it. Regardless, I plan to keep my site up and provide it as a service to anyone that wants to listen.

Well I have a Mac so I never was able to listen on Team Speak. But if you made it so it now works with Macs, then I'll give it a listen. Thanks.

But the Apple TV commercials say everything works better on a MAC?

well actually the windows version of Teamspeak runs pretty well on a mac using WINE.You can actually record with it. When I used Teamspeak on windows vista that didn't record it pretended to but if you looked at the file it would be like 1kB in size. It was disappointing too because I was recording something about a barricade situation and they called in the mobile command station, the swat team and 2-3 choppers.
Teamspeak has worked great for me. Thanks for hosting terrysb. I have it installed on both of my computers and always make sure it's fired up on the weekends and big events, like snow events.
