Every NFL team had their seasons shortened by those strikes. Please explain to me how the shortened seasons were an advantage for the Redskins...

Because the Redskins played less games meaning there were less games they could lose. So there is the reason - Got it?

It's more a matter of the Redskins taking advantage of the situation. I'm not sure what the theory is for 1982. Here is the case for 1987.
1. Many NFL front offices believed the games involving replacement players wouldn't count in the final standings, so they didn't make much of an effort to go recruit the good players. The Redskins, who had better counsel, knew the games would count (if they didn't the season ticket holders could have sued for breach of contract). The Redskins therefore went all out to hire the best players available.
2. The Redskins were the only team in the NFL that stuck together and held out 100%. This meant that during replacement games there was never any conflict between the pros and the reps, which gave the rep players a feeling of a team identity all their own. That helped them both on and off the field.
3. Because the Redskins stuck together there was no locker room conflict after the strike between those who held out and those who crossed the picket line. All of the other teams had to deal with this situation (roughly one player in seven crossed the line).
These factors, unique to the 1987 season, gave the Redskins a considerable advantage during the three rep games (all of which they won) and after the strike when many other teams were dealing with dissension in the locker room.
This was the most unlikely of the three Redskin SB wins. The team was far from the best in the league over the short season and may have struggled to make the playoffs in an undisrupted 16 game season. Doug Williams lost both games he started during the season. He never again played at his 1987 playoff level. In 1988 the Redskins lost 5 of their last 6 games and finished 7-9, a huge decline for a SB winner.
