No one was injured, but the FD did not save the building infact the the building was completely destroyed and the family displaced.

Be careful with your fireplace! They requires skills from the last generation.

Google will not tell you everything you need to know - google will give you answers suggesting they are all when they are just posers. A history of fire departments and home fires would help.

* never leave a fire un-tended, not a second with children about
* a fire is an activity that requires your attention like driving does
* insure your chimney meets fire safety codes (did your builder cheat?)
* have a fire extinguisher on-hand and insure your hose is also ready.
* there is no good way to avoid carbon monoxide poisoning from most fireplaces installed in fairfax other than to open windows (yes, colder): only heat stoves do that.

These are mostly people like gerry that have no concept of how a fireplace works. They don't open the damper, buy all the wood at the grocery store for $7 a pack...use starter logs for firewood all year. Never, ever, ever even consider getting a chimney cleaned. I've seen it all.

We had a neighbor who started burning garbage in his fireplace one winter, then he’d be all freaked out when his whole house would start smelling like fumes from plastic and disgusting food smells and stuff flying out of his chimney. Shit was a mess, the whole house stank for months.
