"Even if it 50 cents it hurts them in the pocket if 130,000 people do it!"

You really think that $65000 dollars in reduced revenue will hurt them? Well, OK then. I think they'd just shit-can a couple more "customer service reps" to make up that difference.

The real damage is that they've pushed me to seriously consider FiOS/DirectTV. I think I'm going to switch, and I'm sure I won't be alone. The fact that I'm having these thoughts after never even considering it until now is what they need to worry about.

I'm in Herndon...don't think its working here yet. I pull out the plug for the box, plug it in again....then it says "reboot" on the box display...for about 10 seconds, then it disappears and goes totally dark. Eventually, the time displays, but that's all.

Should something else happen when it says "reboot"?...again, mine just goes dark.

@ bumblebee--- for starters the FCC is going to fine them big time. They just lost out on all of the advertisment for the last 6 hours wich equates to a few million dollars from 130+ channels, all of fairfax county was out and cox has about 1 million customers. Under federal law the cable company has to reimburse everyone. 6 hours of no cable. 6 hours equals a net loss of 2 percent for the entire month ( estimated). For a company as big as cox that can be a huge loss.

Excellent. I see the next shift of Cox's "customer service" has arrived for duty.

By the way, genius, it wasn't so much the "power outage" (and how do YOU know that's what it was, Mr. Employee-of-the-Month?) but the complete LACK OF COMMUNICATION from Cox that is probably chapping everybody's asses. Holy crap, 5 hours of dead air when it isn't even raining, and they can't even throw up a notice on their website?

Medd,

Good point on the ad revenue loss. Still, 190k subscribers dead on World Series night means at least 10% of them considering switching to the competition. At say $100 a month, that's potentially $1.9M a month in lost revenue. Even if only 1% switch, that's still $190k a month. Every month.

Please note: These are completely made-up numbers, and so they mean squat. All I am saying is that pissed-off switching customers can add up quickly. Never mind the word-of-mouth effect.

But this FCC fine thing, that's the one related to not handling CIQ, correct? I admit I have no knowledge of that. How big a fine could they get from that?

The FCC regulates all broadcasting. If a cable company fails to broadcast any showing they always get fined. I dont know how much. If it is due to inclement weather or a problem that was out of thier control they dont get fined.

In case anyone is wondering what actually happened, a few minutes after 4:30pm, the DC power at one of the Cox headends (the building with the racks and racks of equipment that the cable tv comes from) failed, and their backup didn't kick in.

Oh well, then, my bad. I, and everyone in Northern VA, should have immediately known to check their social networking sites for information. Especially Grandma and Grandpa, you know how much they like to Twitter! Shoot, I knew I should have immediately "friended" all my service providers when I had the chance.

And as to that "support" status page they have? If you consider one notice (at 6:54 PM) that says this: "Our technicians are aware and working to resolve the issue. Currently there is no estimated time of repair" to be a real-time, cutting-edge update, then I don't know what to say.

Wait, no, I do. If what you're posting here is what Cox considers counter-crisis communications, then I can understand why they screwed this up so badly. Break time's over, back to the Live Chat queue, lotsa angry "whiners" to answer to, FinF.

My company uses Cox for Metro Ethernet services and has several GigE ports with them. Service description here: http://ww2.cox.com/business/northernvirginia/data/metro-ethernet.cox

Not sure if this is related to the TV outage but several of our ports were hard down for an hour in the 1pm - 2pm time range earlier today.

AND T-Mobile was down for 9 hours yesterday
AND Montgomery County's traffic lights failed today
AND Metro's communication system failed today
AND NOW I'm hearing there are reported clocking issues with some of the GPS satellites

Solar flare activity? What the hell is going on? Seriously wtf

Finally. Cable is back on. I'm going to seriously consider Verizon, not because Cox had an outage. They rarely have outages in Centreville. The main reason is the total lack of updates on their website added to the 4 hours of busy signal on the only telephone number for all of Northern Virginia.

I didn't call non-stop, but come on. At 10 fucking PM, you can't tell me that all of their lines were full. They set their phones to busy and didn't bother answering.

And that my friends, is bullshit.

"Oh, why am I bothering? Poor lil' fella's still crying about his .50."

You know, I let this slide the first time that you did it, but come on, man. Reading comprehension, "toughguy" (now all one word for EXTRA emphasis!). Scroll up. Go ahead. I'm actually not the one who said that $.50 would make a difference. In fact, I argued the opposite.

This outage is partly bad luck - from Broadcast's post, it sounds like the backup generators didn't come online like they were supposed to (on the likely final game of the WS) - and mostly crummy customer service (see the frustrated posts above). Fair or not, they have put into the heads of a lot of previously loyal customers the idea of switching. Expect Verizon et al. to capitalize on the opportunity.

And frankly, you're a little schizo in your postings here. First, we were all a bunch of crybabies to you, and now you're one of us, just valiantly posting the silly things that Cox is saying. They've really got to better tweak the script sheets at Cox Communications. You're not making sense.

To say goodnight: Thanks FU, for being a source of info in a vacuum, and I'm glad I get to see at least the last couple of innings of the game. And Cox, you've probably gotten my last payment for shaky service.

At 11:55pm EST, service is still out in Huntington. There is more to this than a failed backup generator. They could have had a couple of rented megawatt class mobile backup power trailers there at the headend site within an hour.

I think that Metro Ethernet Customer may be onto something with his question about Metro, T-Mobile, Montgomery Co., and GPS.

Perhaps DARPA's first Artilect has gotten loose in NoVA....

I admitted that I might be dense, but you can not justify changing something that you are allegedly quoting to something other than what was originally stated under the guise of "fixing" it.

You appear to be more technologically savvy than me, but, just like hundreds of people I went to college with, you don't seem to have any command of how to communicate properly (accurately, in this case) in writing.

If you care to elaborate on why my original statement is somehow inaccurate or flawed, have at it, just don't "quote" what I said while changing the exact wording I used. Dick.

The latest apology:
"We let you down. You expected to turn on your television and sit down to watch the game or your favorite Wednesday night show. That probably didn’t happen and I apologize for that. Some of our most vital equipment took a significant power hit, and when rebooted, much like a home computer, it did not come back on line properly. In spite of tremendous effort on the part of our best people, that reboot process took several hours and frankly, probably ruined your night. As your neighbor, I experienced the same in my home.

We are committed to you, our valued customer, and nothing is more important than rebuilding your trust in us by taking action to make things right. First, we’re going to credit your account with a free month of digital gateway service ($6.99). The credit will be automatically applied to your account, no need for you to do anything. We also hope you will take advantage of a free video on demand movie by clicking on www.coxnovaoffer.com for details.

While such an outage has not occurred in the history of Cox Nova, we take this very seriously and are already working to ensure higher reliability of our video network as we completely review processes and emergency procedures so that you can enjoy your evenings uninterrupted.

We appreciate having you as a customer, and I want you to know that my team and I worked through the night to be sure that this message was awaiting you when you started your day. It's important to us to do the right thing. My thanks for allowing us to serve you,

Is the cable out again!? My TV is not working! I had an urge to watch bad TV so I figured I would flip on channel 10 and watch monster madhouse to get my fill of bad TV.

I sent this to the FCBOS:

"Dear Fairfax County BOS;
Last night during game six of the World Series, nearly all of Fairfax lost cable TV service from Cox. This outage lasted from the early evening to about 10 PM. This is only the latest in a long line of service incompetence, and behind-the-curve technology from this arrogant monopoly. It is time the Fairfax citizens had greater choice in their cable providers. All we have is the one.

CATV is out again today!

Fairfax is a leading-edge technology center, vital to the economy and security of the nation. To have our TV and communications services provided by such a third rate company is intolerable. It is time greater competition vie for Fairfax's million-strong consumer base, and we subscribers had a choice. This cannot go on! Cox has a monopoly on cable TV. Why? There are literally dozens of other companies that would love to compete for Fairfax's business. I cannot and will not believe that Cox is the only way to go, or that individuals cannot be allowed to make a choice.
I look forward to hearing what measures you are going to take to unchain Fairfax from the grip of the Cox monopoly.
Sincerely,
Jim in Annandale"

man the people working for Fios and posing as "reformed" customers sure are gorillas! everyone I've ever spoken to who switched to Fios has regretted it for LOTS of reasons... Cox might have made a mistake here but judging by their response, it sure seems like they're doing everything they can to personally take care of their customers! www.facebook.com/CoxNova

Hi, all. Sorry it's taken me so long to post here. Fairfax Underground is a new thing for me.

Here's what's going on. There's obviously some big things that went wrong in the past 24 hours. When our service went down, we discovered some gaps in our ability to communicate. We discovered we could not locally post to our own website, and couldn't get to the people who could.

Our phone lines also got overwhelmed, and we couldn't answer everyone's questions.

Cox NOVA has never encountered an issue of this scope before, and it illustrated some flaws in our systems. Our team has literally been working around the clock since yesterday to make this right and answer everyone's questions. We're proactively establishing new channels to communicate.

We appreciate everyone's feedback and completely understand your frustration. We're doing everything in our power to make sure that none of our customers experience this again.

We know most of you ended up missing the last game of the World Series last night. We're trying to get that back on the air for you if you have interest, and will let you know as soon as we have details.

If you haven't heard yet, we're automatically crediting all of our digital subscribers accounts $6.99 (the cost of the digital gateway) for this month. And, to say thanks for your patience (and I know it's been required in the past day), we're offering a free movie On Demand. Go to www.CoxNovaOffer.com for instructions on redeeming.

I know it's been a tough day for everyone-thank you for taking the time to listen to us.

Jim in Annandale,

You do have a choice, you have FIOS, you have direct TV, and you have Dish Network... Despite what you may believe, none of the above entertainment providers are 100% fail safe and neither are any of the other cable companies that "would love to compete for Fairfax's Business". In fact, many of the other cable providers can't hold candle to Cox. Last nights issues could have happened to any one of them...

To everyone else

I have lived all over the United States and subscribed to all kinds of cable providers and dish services and never have I seen the GM of any company make a public apology and up front just reimburse customers because of an outage. 99.9999% of other companies make customers call and request a credit and here they took ownership of the issue. There were work around procedures posted all over the place as to how you could still watch TV. I lost digital service but I still watched everything I wanted to last night by bypassing my cable box. You obviously have ulterior motives to get rid of Cox. As for me, I am a fan and I appreciate that they accepted responsibility instead of pointing fingers. Stuff happens... get over it.

I still have outages of some of my channels. I have TIVO that uses digital cards rather than the cable box. This creates a whole different set of problems for Cox. Has something to do with Tivo adapter and switched digital channels, none of which I really understand. So I tried for about 3 hours today to get through to Cox to explain problem and see if I could get a technician out. Never got through. Have given up for the day even though a major golf tournament I wanted to see is on the golf channel (one of the channels that isn't working) tonight at 11. Will miss it for the second straight night and probably the weekend as I fear getting a technician out here in the next day or so will be close to impossible.

?? What home computer doesn't reboot properly? Here's what the translated version means.

Our shit got fucked up and it took a while to get back online. End of story.

Their home computer analogy makes me want to go to Verizon. It's bullshit.

Hi everybody-- I wante to give a quick update on our previous outage. We're working to finish the maintenance we did on Wednesday to bring our digital service back up. Between 12 am and 5 am tomorrow morning, we'll be doing some follow up maintenance. This will ensure higher reliability of the video network.

During this time, there's a possiblity that some channels may not be available for a short period of time. Also, DVR recordings may be interrupted during that time. And, if you are watching an On Demand movie, it may stop. If you purchased a movie/show On Demand, once it returns, you'll have the entire remaining window of your rental to view it.

Thanks again for your patience, and all of your feedback on this forum. We appreciate hearing from you. If you have any questions, don't hesitate to post them here. I'll be monitoring frequently throughout the night.

Hope everyone has a restful weekend!

Click the above link for a FREE On-Demand Movie at Cox. This offer was made due to the outage earlier this month. Everyone take advantage of this because Cox is not publicizing it much - I saw the ad on tv, but didn't find anything on the website or my bill.

Question about the free on-demand movie offer. Does it only apply for movies ordered through channel 1? Or can I order one from the HD on-demand channel (channel 700) and also have the credit applied? The fine print on the offer website only mentions channel 1, but I think the movies on HD-OD are the same price, right?

Here's some light reading for you. It will help you understand why Comcast does not offer service here.

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Monopoly

Cox has regional exclusivity to all coax cables.

Thanks Cox Comm. for the wake up call. After several years of suppling my cable at $55. mo. and $20K later, I called Cox out for a problem with dropped phone calls and internet disconnect issues. The tech they sent out damaged a bed post and night stand. Their offer to remedy the damage was $175. from Eric in the claims dept. which was insulting and unacceptable, considering the value of the furniture and extent of the damage.

But thanks for showing me the err in my poor judgement. The next 20K I spend will NOT BE ON CABLE, but maybe a new motorcycle, car, real estate, stocks, investments, boat, travel, cruises, Vegas, education, anything more or less tangible than a cable signal that shows countless re-runs.

No more Cox-sucker's in this house. Your OUT Cox!

Try your flat panels digital tuner, it works excellently!

I have found big companies like the power companies will damage your property doing work on thier utilities and try to settle the issue with a settlement check but they never get around to mailing. Even when they claim they are sending out a new check it will never arrive.

What makes the situtation worse is that they act like they are not the ones who damaged your property. Because they play the pass the buck off game, saying that the damage was done by contractors of thiers. NOT THEM.

Good for you screw those Cox suckers!

Now go out and spend that whole 20K on a used Lambo kit car.

Or a real one, in not so great shape.
