Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
Lifetime is $69.99 per month. I believe that is their base level offering for a single membership. Family/volume discounts may apply though.
LTF in Centreville is the best gym in my opinion. Especially with the recent renovations (shocking what can be accomplished in a week).
But you do have to put up with peak-time hassles (M-F 5-7:30) as you do risk not being able to get your favorite piece of equipment, hectic parking lot, and a lot
edit to add more detail forthe OP; There is a registration fee of about 200 dollars which I believe is waived for nearly all members. Just refuse to join if they dont. But there is admininstrative fee of $79.99 which I dont think is easy to get past. It is month to month membership and you will be billed automatically until you cancel. I'm sure the cancellation process is a PITA but hopefully not as bad as someone described Balley's recently

Correct, thier mothers will not let them use the car except for picking up some Clearisil at Wahlgreens, Besides , they might have to talk to a girl at a gym.
Been a LTF member at Centreville for about 10 years; besides plenty of drama (what gym doesnt have it), the gym is pretty good. Singles may not like it quite as much since it caters more to families, families love it for the child care facilities and two hours of free childcare included.
Forget the machines and the wait. Do full squats and deadlifts and never wait for a machine to open up again, especially at lifetime, where nobody uses the squat rack. Of course every bench is taken up, so you could do some military presses in the squat rack. Check out the dip handles too, nobody uses those.
ps If you have wee ones you need to get out of your hair for 60 so you can workout ltf is a pretty good deal. If you go twice a week and have 2 or more rugrats you pay for your membership with childcare. Granted the child care ranges from good to suspect but chances are your kid will not die.
ps the pool is a killing field for the children of unaware parents - the lifeguards are more interested in texting and fucking off than safety
Of course you have the assholes who like to linger over your shoulder waiting for you to finish on a machine asking "how many more sets you got?" or even the dreaded, "can I work in with you?". "No, but you can wait for me to finish you POS"
===================================================================================
When I see someone who actually knows what they are doing I wouldn't bother doing this - but when I see someone reading a book while sitting on a machine or taking 5 minute rests between sets - I'll gladly inject myself because I'm there to workout, not be some poser with a fat ass staring at the spandex crowd.
What don't you like about Golds, OP? I'm a reluctant member b/c they recently took away the courtesy towels and cut the free childcare hours. Their hours also kind of suck. They close early on weekend evenings and childcare isn't open all day. I miss Lifetime, but I like Gold's classes better and enjoy the Media Room. I never utilized the pools at Lifetime.

Asking to 'work-in' it is totally acceptable. In real gyms (golds) where there are a lot of people lifting at once it is a must. It should take no more than 30 seconds to finish a set on the weights. If it is a machine you can get off and rest 30 seconds while someone else worksin. Assholes that do a rep and then sit on the machine for 3 min. between sets should be shot. Its a workout machine not a fucking couch.

I kid you not, there is a guy who reads a book between sets on a machine. WTF? It's bad enough you see people texting or talking on their cell phones - but reading a book? Don't get me started on gym behaviors. Blow dry your balls at home, dipshit; nobody wants to see that kind of crap in the locker room.
Kids under 14 aren't allowed in the workout areas; although a few people try to sneak them up from time to time.
seriously, if you're not actually using the machine at the moment, what's the big deal about letting someone work in? a set only lasts a few minutes anyway.
As I said in my post, if you're moving right along; I'll be patient and do the next thing on my list and come back - but if you're still there after I've done two or three other things, I'll ask. Generally I find this kicks the person in gear and they move along quicker.
I keep my headphones on, I only take them off to talk if I know you - otherwise I have no interest in making more friends.

+1
A set (8-12 reps) generally lasts a minute at the correct tempo. Unless a person is using a quick circuit train type cycle, they should take another minute to recover and let another work in.
If this is a problem, then hit the gym when it isn't busy.

When I cancelled Lifetime, all I had to do was send a letter 30 days prior. I sent it return receipt, just in case they tried to say they didn't get it.
For a no frills cheap gym, there is World Gym on Main Street in Fairfax. I believe this is where Gold's Gym used to be. I guess it was a school building at one point?
It is 20 bucks a month. I took a tour.. but it really wasn't for me. I think that the inside of the building is not a place to put a gym.
I know that others have said it in a couple of different ways, but I am going to definitely avoid at all costs the LTF that Expensve Jeans frequents. I have never experienced a c()nt quite like what she describes as being her presence at her health club. "Mind if I work in?" ???
family of two here pays 110, thats with a discount for employer deal with lifetime tho. Anyone know when the Fairfax gym is opening it's been closed for almost a week. Lifetime is pretty funny tho, plenty of hot little pieces of ass, the personal trainers are cute and have some idea of what they are talkin about, another bonus is that all the skinny little asians cant lift anything, so when I'm repping 315lb on the bench they all gawk.

Not at Centreville - most of those asians are jacked up and there's very little in the way of eye candy (about 2 years ago it was crazy, but not so much anymore). At least it's like that when I'm there.

The higher monthly rates keep out a certain element. All i've observed are upstanding citizens who are wealthy enough or whose parents are wealthy enough to pay their wages and enjoy the workouts. They keep attractive young women on the staff and all the minorities on towel cleaning and bathroom cleaning detail. The only complaint that I have are the large number of fat people recieving personal training that feel the need to wear spandex, but at least they are in the gym trying!

headphones headphones headphones! from personal experience it's best to keep to yourself and avoid contact with the "regulars". They are overly friendly types that want to bring you into their dysfunctional world and cut you down with their gossip. Let's all admit there's quite a bit of sexual energy/tension/flirtation going on at gyms also! and don't get too friendly with predatory trainers, that's a mistake I made. I've gone to Lifetime for about 10 years and I'm about ready to quit.

Thanks for the heads up. I may have made the wrong decision going with the trainer that they "assigned" me. I'm going to finish out the packaged sessions before I make any decisions though...

I haven't been to the gym in two months. Since it became cooler outside, I just loaded my hiking pack full of books (40 lbs. worth, to start with), and I run, hike, do push-ups/pull-ups with it on. Best damn decision ever. I guess I'll get back to the gym eventually, though (Reston Sport & Health).

something's wrong with these losers brains. who stalks and romanticizes a person for 10 years whom they never even met and pretends they might become a mufti-millionaire. so go ahead, sell those memberships, and then let's go see who you can fuck to get out of the place and denigrate so you feel good then lie and say you didn't. they do this so you feel quite at home and comfortable without saying anything plausible and ignore integrity costs.
...but...that's just my theory...not like it's true or not, but I'm just saying...
that makes sense, and they act like they don't know what you're talking about =D, and I'm not saying their employer is repugnant or hypocritical, not even close. They act like this because they say they're going to make me a multi-millionaire. They're real &*^@#$s man. They all really act like they're you're an acquaintance and then lie and say whatever they want without actually knowing you. it's really not so surprising this shit is still going on, but i've been wrong before, but they only really care about your money *surprise*, but I guess that's my fault too.

I tried both Lifetime and Gold's gym, and I prefer Golds. It's half the price ($30 rather than $60), the personal trainers are MUCH nicer and well-qualified, the cardio-cinema is cool, and there is a separate weight/cardio room for us ladies if we want to use it. I haven't tried any of the classes but they look very well-attended.
And parking at Lifetime is too much of a hassle.
For the most part, every gym in the area is going to have your basic weights, which is all you really need. Gyms that cost more like Lifetime have tons of weights and machines that do the same thing but to an uneducated customer it might look like a body sculpting warehouse. I've been at Lifetime for 7 years, and personally I don't have a problem paying the little more that I do to go there, mainly because of all the hot tits walking around.
I stick with Lifetime, despite the outrageous monthly fee, for mainly four reasons:
1. They're open 24 hours a day. Give me a random day/time combination and chances are I've worked out at that time at least once.
2. It's on my way home or to work.
3. My daughter can use the pool in the winter time.
4. I need a gym. I'm one of those people that can't work out at home - too many distractions.

went to a spinning class at Lifetime the other day, told the instructor it was my first class who responded "don't listen to anything I say." Gee, how helpful! The class was filled with wannabe Lance Armstrongs, some stayed over from the first spinning class so they spent over 2 hours on a bike! Good Lord!
I've also wondered about personal trainer qualifications. For example, what's the difference between the different certifying organziations (ACE, etc) and how do you know the trainer is current in their certification? Maybe they should post their certifications like certain other professions. Once I saw a gym patron actually get injured while being trained! When you're paying upwards of $75/hr these things should be important!
This gym is run by an Iranian criminal and I honestly feel like they're ALL of them are this way, but it's just because they say that they love you and it's just how they're trained to steal the drawers from your locker pretend that they didn't, because it's not apart of their member point of view ....I don't know, but it's kind of a creepy feeling when their staff start to stalk me and harass me and their CEO says it's their lifestyle. I feel sorry for this gym, and these people they take advantage of, but it's up to youself how you feel. do your research so no more kids drown in their pools, but on thing's for sure you won't see me there. I really have no respect for these people, but that's just my opinion to heart. You guys should probably pay more ..how about $100 a month, seriously you guys need to do your nigger research so forget it, these guys have no lives and are sore losers.
all of this is just because they want more money folks, and it's their lifestyle! It's because they think they can do whatever they want because their CEO is from a different country.
ENJOY !!!! the member point of view and I'm gone. peace bitches, but that's just my opinion. and maybe you should ask them if they know what they're talking about

Planet Fitness is great! It is a no frills gym. Rarely a wait for machines. $20/$40 to join $10/$20 per month depending on the membership and cancel at anytime. In this area that is a lunch!
Added benefit (NO KIDS) You can't beat that! Work out get in get out!
