There is a huge amount of fraud. Lots of people sign their kids up for this program when they do not meet the qualifications. No audits, no checks, nothing. Some of them get caught. There have been many school employees, well paid federal workers, private sector employees, etc. etc. that have been dragged into court.

Uh, better check your facts:
1. You can't see demographics on free lunches, can you? I'd bet 90% of kids are from the US who are in need of lunch every day;
2. Even if FCPS fed illegals breakfast, lunch, and dinner every day of the year, it would not add up to 40,000,000- remember many of the kids you think are illegal, aren't. They were born here - like it or not.;
3. "Normal" people's kids who have parents that voted for Trump get free lunches. Check out the free lunch ratio in Trump voting precincts;
4. Greedy - it is lunch for a kid- mostly kids who had no choice to come here. 5. Feed the hungry or poor? Not you. Let kids starve all day - that's your plan for a better future.
6. Read the audit. This includes breakfast and lunch for infants,kids, and adults. Kids in juvenile detention, too.

You need a reality check. There are some white kids who get free lunches, but it is not 90%, closer to 10% Those kids were not born here. There was a huge influx of unaccompanied minors into the county, especially over the past two years. Virtually all of those kids are illegals and virtually all of them get free lunches. I invite you to come visit Key Middle School or Lee High School in the fall. You can come to volunteer or observe for a day and see for yourself.

Feeding the kids probably does not "pay off". That is a myth perpetuated by liberals. There might be an argument that they behave better with full bellies, but even that is debatable.

The vast majority of the illegal kids don't give a rats ass about actually learning anything, and their out-of-control disrespectful behavior distracts the much smaller number (10 or 15%) who actually do have an interest in learning. To be clear, I am speaking about the kids from El Salvador and Honduras. The Afgans, Somalis, Haitians, etc. are much better students.

In my opinion - EVERY Salvadorian, Honduran, Sudanese, Haitian and Somali immigrant should be should be sent back home. And I mean fast, by next weekend.

All illegal immigrants should be sent home. But there is most definitely a difference between the various groups.

The Somali immigrants are here as refugees; they are Christians and were literally being hunted and killed by Muslims back in their homeland. They are here legally and should be allowed to stay.

The Haitian and Somali kids are generally well-behaved in school, interested in learning, and try to assimilate to become Americans.

The kids from El Salvador and Honduras are often illiterate even in Spanish, and the vast majority only come to school to escape their depressing overcrowded home lives and do not have any desire to learn. They will always be a drain on society if not outright gang criminals.

You may be right with one exception. Enforce the laws! Enforce the immigration laws by shutting off the border and deport those that are eligible for deportation. Then provide meals for those that are eligible for it rather than having a come one, come all attitude about the school lunch program. If you feel compelled to feed the world there are plenty of charitable organizations needing help from local organizations to World Vision and Feed the Children. They also need volunteer help as well!

We need to make it so there is no reward here for illegal immigrants. No free lunches, no free school, no jobs, NOTHING.

It's not just lunch. They serve breakfast and an after-school meal as well.

The free meals are a major reason the illegal central american kids come to school, along with the opportunity to socialize with their friends and get out of the shitty apartments where they live with twenty-odd parents, grandparents, uncles, etc.

Bottom line: If we enforced our borders, we would have so much more money to spend on kids whose parents are legal citizens.

I actually meant to say Sudan. However the small number of Somali kids in local schools are not so bad. Maybe Minnesota is a different story.

Because we didn't enforce our laws and our borders, this is why school systems not just in Fairfax, but all over the country are having severe budget issues.
Its hard to understand how some people cannot see the connection.

Im having trouble finding a line item where FCPS pays out of local taxes for lunch programs. I see 'Federal Expenditures' where FCPS spends Federal Grants but the OP's claim FFX taxes pay 40 million sounds incredible. If OP would kindly point out line item Id appreciate it.

Not saying its not true just didnt have the time to locate it. With 73k students Im sure its possible but its seems really high. I guess if 10% of the students got free lunches that would be 6k per the year

Much of the school lunch program is funded by the Federal Government. Been a while since I looked at it, however, with the revenues from non subsidized students it is a program that is self supporting. The waste is Uncle Sam's and the expansion of that waste is Obama's.

The money spent on free/reduced lunches does not cost anything. It pays us all back with the future tax dollars we get from the children that grow up to be taxpaying citizens. It is a fantastic program that makes us money.

No. All it does is encourage more illegals to come here. The (Central American) illegal kids are essentially just attending classes to pass the time, flirt with each other, gossip with their friends, and play on their smartphones. They are not motivated to learn and are not getting an education, just a free lunch--and free breakfast and free after-school snack.

The county has more than enough maids, housekeepers, landscapers, and construction day-laborers. Yet for 99.99% of these kids, that is all they will be and all they aspire to be. Well, the girls also aspire to have children of their own and to be mothers....

A lot of these families are getting SNAP as well as breakfast and lunch for the school age kids, plus there is also WIC. But, it is never enough. They are getting more to feed their families than I spend per month on mine. And no, they still can't afford peanut butter and jelly and bologna and cheese. I don't see too many malnourished people around here, that's for sure.
