Sometimes the goobermint likes to interfere with your computers when you are trying to post nice juicy links snatched from websites like 4chan that they would rather you not see, because they portray hidden facts that would be an embarrassment to the thought speak of the controlled media. When this happens your posts won't make the jump into FU easily, as if you are being rerouted somewhere else far away before your entry actually posts. So dead links are placed to see if non-sensitive info can get posted as fast as normally expected without the long pauses of waiting.
