Why does it sound like Fourth of July near Vienna/Fairfax?

That was the sound of Mike Green's slap shot (yes, you can hear it in Fairfax even though it happened in New York). The Caps now only trail by 1 mid-way through the third period.

Sounded like thunder or explosions. Realized it was fireworks at Westwood Country Club. Reason unknown. Halloween?

Maybe they wanted to copy Chantilly National Golf & Country Club? They were setting up fireworks last night for their open house.

We did have some thunderstorms the other day as well. They passed off to the WNW of us, going through Eastern Loudoun Co. and heading into Montgomery Co. I thought they were Fireworks at first myself. It happened two different days last week, the same scenario.
