A man is in custody and two children are safe after a barricade situation in Fort Hunt that lasted more than 17 hours, the Fairfax County police said.

Police said at about 1:20 p.m. Monday that the man had been taken into custody at his house on Thomas J. Stockton Parkway near Culpeper and Londonderry roads after they used a Taser on him, about 20 minutes after the children had left the house.

The situation began at about 8 p.m. Sunday, when a friend of the man called them, saying the man was having “a mental crisis.” Police came to the house, and while they were able to contact the men, he wouldn’t let them in.

The police later said that two children, who they believed were four and eight years old, were in the house with the man. They said they were concerned for the children’s welfare, though they added that the man hadn’t threatened the children.

Officers spoke with the man on the phone periodically throughout the morning, trying to get him to a hospital.

A little after 1 p.m., the police said, the children left the house and were taken into protective custody. The man continued to be uncooperative and went in and out of the house, and at one point an officer used a Taser on the man.

He was taken to a hospital for evaluation. No one else was hurt.

A man experiencing a mental health crisis has barricaded himself in his home with two of his children, according to Fairfax County Police.

Police have blocked off areas around Culpeper and Londonderry roads on Monday as they tried to safely coax the man out, said Officer Tawny Wright, a spokeswoman for the department.

Officers responded to the man’s home around 8 p.m. Sunday after a friend who was talking on the phone with him became concerned he was experiencing a mental health crisis and called police, Wright said.

Officers attempted to take the man into custody for emergency psychiatric services, but the man refused to go with police and barricaded himself in the home, Wright said.

It is unclear whether the man had a weapon, but negotiators have spoken on the phone with the man periodically since Sunday night, Wright said.

With children involved, “it elevates the concern for us and causes us to approach things more delicately,” Wright said.

Wright would not disclose the ages of the children inside.

A man having a mental health crisis has barricaded himself inside his Fairfax County home for more than 12 hours, and police believe two children may be inside with him.

Officers were called to the 2600 block of Culpepper Road in the Alexandria section of the county at 8 p.m. Sunday for a welfare check.

Police have paperwork authorizing them to take the resident into custody for an evaluation, but the man refused to come out when they arrived.

Police say two children could be inside the home, and the man could be armed.
"We're trying to help. Just come out. We're not trying to hurt you. We're just trying to help," Fairfax County police spokeswoman Tawny Wright said.

Fairfax County Police remain on the scene of a barricade situation Monday morning after hours of negotiating with a man inside a home who may also have two children with him, authorities said.
According to Fairfax County Police, the barricade started sometime around 8 p.m. when they received a call form a friend saying a man was experiencing a mental crisis at a home on Culpeper Road.
Police say a negotiator is on the scene and they have been in contact with the man, but he has refused to come out of the house. An emergency custody order was also obtained but does not appear to be successful in recovering any possible children from inside the home at this time. Police say the man has not threatened to harm the children.
Police are encouraging neighbors to remain inside their homes.

Everyone waiting and watching for him to be shot went home.

FN will eventually post something.

A 17 hour standoff for a dude who didn't think he needed professional help. Why did they feel the need to taze him when he came out, was he combative?

Guess you can't have a bad day in your home without the police surrounding your home.
Bet you he'll be released after the 4 hour limit is reached and the professionals say he's not suicidal. The Police Chief there changed the SOP's for barricade situations, everything is a barricade situation.
The Chief is following the California west coast wacky liberal views of the proper ways to conduct police work.
Sometimes the police should just walk away...
What a shame for a once proud police department.

Whites only are permitted to live and own in that neighborhood. All others must reside in Gum Springs.

Real Facts of Incident:

1. Police never obtained Search Warrant during Standoff. Police could not get search warrant thus could not legally enter the house.

2. House was not "Barricaded" the doors where simply locked.

3. Man evaluated by professionals, and released.

4. Man had reached custody agreement for his children weeks prior, spouse not happy she was given choice to go to custody trial or give man almost 50% Custody. Bottom line - Custody Battle large contributing factor to "standoff".

5. Man home schooled one of the children involved, because of developmental disabilities. Man also arranged for IEP so child could attend FFX County Public Schools.

6. Man was in fear that either his children or he would be shot and killed if they came out. Fairfax County PD does have a history of killing unarmed citizens in these types of scenarios.

7. Wife had accused man in the past of possessing or having access to weapons as a tactic to gain upper hand in divorce proceedings.

8. Man does not own weapons. When police finally got warrant (after man came out), the found no weapons.

9. CPS investigation - Children not hurt, threatened, or abused in any way.

10. Wife/Mother of children has history of making false allegation against man in an attempt to better position herself for divorce/custody.

11. Police talked to children via phone, children stated they did not want to come out.

12. Man had no legal obligation to come out of house. Man released children when he was certain they would not shoot them as they departed house.

13. Man TASERED Three Times. Twice in the genitals, and once in the chest.

14. BOTTOM LINE: LAWSUIT
