Pedestrian traffic fatalities in 2016 increased by roughly 35 percent in Virginia compared with 2015, according to a new study by the Governor’s Highway Safety Association released last week.

According to the analysis of preliminary data, pedestrian traffic fatalities increased in 34 states and decreased in 15 states and the District of Columbia. Overall, the study estimates that the number of pedestrians killed in 2016 increased by 11 percent compared to 2015, the largest annual increase in both the number and percentage of pedestrian fatalities in 40 years. The increase for all of 2016 was estimated based on preliminary data provided by State Highway Safety Offices for the first half of 2016.

According to the study, between January-June 2016, there were 50 pedestrian traffic fatalities in Maryland. For the same period in 2015, there were 37 pedestrian traffic fatalities.

The GHSA says factors such as increased driving, fuel prices and the amount of time people spent walking all likely contributed to the increase in pedestrian fatalities. A more recent factor for the increase may be the use of smartphones while walking and driving, which can be a source of distraction for both pedestrians and motorists.

As a percentage of total motor vehicle deaths, pedestrian deaths increased from 11 percent to 15 percent between 2006-2015.

The study also highlighted what states are doing to combat the increase in pedestrian fatalities. In Virginia, those efforts include Arlington, Fairfax, and Prince William Counties and the cities of Richmond, Roanoke, and Salem, which each receive highway safety money to raise awareness of and enforce pedestrian safety laws.

Virginia’s Street Smart Regional Pedestrian and Bicycle Safety Program focuses on promoting pedestrian and bicyclist safety and includes similar strategic enforcement engagements around the metropolitan Washington region. Drive Smart’s Bicycle Pedestrian Awareness Week has been a part of the grant project for the past couple of years. The BPAW is an educational awareness program that encourages drivers to look out for the bicyclists and pedestrians.

A law enforcement partner conducts quarterly pedestrian law enforcement trainings open to all officers across the state. Many law enforcement partners support pedestrian safety high visibility enforcement waves in the spring and fall, and about 100 officers were trained in 2016.

Virginia's program is a fail because it is a worthless victim blaming program. Focus on those doing the killing-start with SUVs and regulate who can drive them. Actually ticket jay drivers and distracted driver instead of engaging in a pedestrian harrassment campaign. If an intersection is killing people redesign it.

"If an intersection is killing people redesign it."

Even better: Build a mosque on one side and put a goat "petting" zoo on the other side of the intersection.

We can fit all our cars with muzztards for hood ornaments.

That's actually a far more likely scenario than one might think given the direction Fairfax is headed.

I always found it amusing how pedestrians in VA seem to confuse the right of way with immortality.

Pedestrians are being blamed because they are part of the problem. There have been countless times where I have been driving and a pedestrian disregards the don't walk signal on the pedestrian signal, and gives me an angry look when I almost hit them. They often times don't use the crosswalks, play on their phones as they walk through traffic and jaywalk.

MOstly it's caused by negroes and their arrogant jaywalking and beaners who aren't paying attention because in the shithole they come from nobody has money for cars, so there aren't any there.

Pedestrians and drivers are both idiots...just the other day a woman is staring in the opposite direction and steps on the outer edge of the curb as if she was going to walk in to the street in front of my car without looking...

Saw an asian jogger crossing the median on braddock, one car left and she thinks it's smart to stand in the middle of the empty lane as a car passes her at 45+mph...
