New to Springfield

I have just moved to Springfield, VA. What are some things to do around here? So far I have only seen a lot of shopping centers and plazas, along with lots of Interstate roads.

Start off by taking a quick basic bus tour. Some of the bus tours can be found here, I like the hop on hop off, but YMMV:

Then you can delve into seeing the specific things you like. The Millennium Stage at Kennedy Center has free performances:

Hey Dumbass, DC is right up the road, 395. There's even a metro train to take you there. It's all the same area, Fairfax County, Northern Virginia

By the way there is also a golf course in Springfield. I've only played it a couple times though.

...and staying away from Tippy's Taco whatever location is better advice, if you value your bowel health.

New to Springfield, or new to the DC area? If the latter, you're 12 miles outside the nation's capital. That should pretty much keep you busy a few decades.

You could join a nice latin gang. I heard they have
some good social activities. Or u can attend a function
at one of the many mosques.

Hi, sorry to say you made a big mistake moving to NOVA. I moved here 6 years ago and its without a doubt the worst place I ever lived. Im not gonna go into why and you shouldnt spend your time finding out, just get out now. And being near DC is a dmbas reason to live here.

Northern VA is great. There are a lot of wetbacks and arabs around, but they are mostly harmless and kept under control by the police. The Fairfax County Police department has an enormous budget and large number of officers for comparatively little serious crime.

In Fairfax County your neighborhood is the entire DC metro area. One nice thing about Springfield is you can get almost anywhere else in the area quickly, so long as you are not going during rush hour and so long as you don't have to take I95 south of Newington or I66 west of Vienna.

In this area I've lived in Great Falls, Old Town Alexandria, Silver Spring (near Briggs Cheney), Fairfax, and Centreville. I moved to Springfield specifically for the strategic location. The large 1/2 acre lots, many of which back up to parkland was also a big factor. Springfield is convenient to Ft. Belvoir, the Pentagon, Old Town Alexandria, DC, Tyson's Corner, Fairfax, and all 3 airports. If you want to go West you can take the Parkway to avoid 66 traffic.

Since living in Springfield I've worked in DC, Gaithersburg, Rockville, Chantilly, Merrifield, Reston, North Bethesda, Crystal City, Court House (Arlington) and Ft. Belvoir. My wife has worked in Greenbelt, Crystal City, and DC. All of those were not bad commutes but I did take the express lanes for the most recent Maryland job.

>>I have just moved to Springfield, VA. What are some things to do around here?

Here are somethings to do:
(1) Join the federal employee union. It's the only one of its kind in the world whose members are not allowed to strike, collectively bargain, or do anything useful with themselves other than jockeying for the next step or grade increase.
(2) Join the local support groups for all the losers and fed fucks who did not make GS-15 by the time they are 30; OR
(3) Join the local country clubs (Army and Navy, Local Boonies Clubs in Western Fairfax) where all the SES fucks who actually think they are somebody important until they meet a contractor that makes 3 times their SES-I salaries
(4) Participate in the local rat race to have your kids join the Gifted & Talented program (or Advanced Academics Program or whatever the fuck they call it these days), attend Thomas Jefferson, and someday graduate to UVA/ WIlliam and mary, or Virginia Tech; OR
(5) Join the Loser Parents Clubs whose kids did not make it to TJ and are happy at NOVA and GMU and will make coffee for people from Asia; OR
(6) Apply for a job with a beltway bandit, making tons of $$, and join the maladjusted self-important pricks who live in McLean, Great Falls, and othe boonies towns where nobody would know if you fucking keel over and die.
AND , finally,
(7) prepare to spend 3.5 hours a day in traffic, cursing out fuck face type A drivers who are in a hurry to their jobs where they can fetch coffee for people from Asia.

Welcome to our corener of Hell.

Somebody is misinformed and/or has a major chip on their shoulder. As a government employee, you aren't going to make much over $160,000 unless you work for an agency that is funded by industry such as the FDIC. An SES-1 is only $207,800. A "beltway bandit" isn't going to make a whole lot more on salary alone; you'd would need to be in sales or business development, which has its own set of hassles. In many cases, contractors are actually paid less than their government counterparts, have no job security, and actually have to perform work rather than simply show up on time with a pulse and stay out of trouble. Other than owning a company, the only way to make "tons" of money in this area is in the legal field. My neighbor in Springfield makes over $700,000 as a patent attorney, and he's not even a partner. It's never too late to go to law school or start your own business.

it's not true that "federal jobs are had by applying for them"

many federal jobs are filled by corrupt practices. i know a few.

meaning: they were not at all qualified when hired and there were strings attached

THAT'S ONE REASON THEY CALL THEM BELTWAY BANDITS

another is because they used the "education law" to fuck over incoming applicants because ... many in the mid 90's had federal jobs and no college education

a quick look at 66 during rush hour, during obama 8 year reign of terror showed

it was a road to obama, mostly hispanics, asians and some blacks - VERY FEW WHITES HEADING into DC for work - since obama likely fired them all

you make it sound as if white people commute to DC for federal jobs on the highway - BUT ONLY A BLIND MAN WOULD BELIEVE THAT IS TRUE ... at least until obama's ass had to leave

West Springfield is fine. It's the central Springfield area that has gone to hell and is infested with illegals. The apartments behind Springfield plaza, and the Chelsea Square Apts on Backlick Rd are the breeding grounds. If the county seized those properties by eminent domain it would make the world a lot safer.

Welcome to the neighborhood. We moved out here almost 2 years ago. It has some issues, like everywhere else. We love our neighborhood. Our neighbors are great! As for things to do: Everything is pretty close and quick access....unless it's rush hour. We have several parks throughout the community, the Town Center, several good eateries, a trampoline park. Everything a resident could want is within a quick grab. If you're looking for nightlife, I recommend going towards the city.
