Sobriety Checkpoint Results
In Sully District
Fairfax County police officers from around the county conducted a sobriety checkpoint to deter and apprehend intoxicated drivers on Friday, September 18, from 11:30 p.m. until 2:30 a.m. Saturday. All motorists were stopped and drivers were checked to assure that their abilities to drive had not been impaired by alcohol or drugs.
Approximately 670 motorists passed through the checkpoint on Lee Highway near the intersection of Pickwick Road. No arrests were made for DWI. One summons was issued for a miscellaneous traffic offense.
Nine officers and five auxiliary police officers participated in the checkpoint.

Stopping "motorists" without suspicion of having done anything wrong - regardless that they stop ALL "motorists" that come through the checkpoint - doesn't sit right with me.

It is. And it also seems like a collosal waste of time.
Why not just send that small army of cops to Springfield mall or some of the other crime hotspots, instead of just having them stand around wasting time?

The roadblocks are to deter DUI's, not catch people. If people know they exist they are more careful. That's why high profile and volume areas are used. Cops drink too, they don't want to catch people for a couple of drinks unless they are slam hammered and a harm to others.

I'm sympathetic to the objective (detering DUIs), but it seems like one of those "slippery slope" kinds of things, "The X's are to deter Y's, not to catch people." That is, how do you refrain from X = some other/greater infringement of a person's liberty, where Y = some other/greater/more "noble" cause. I don't like the idea of relying on the discretion of cops or other gov't actors here.

I agree 100%. Stopping all cars, regardless of a violation, to ask questions about what they have been doing in their personal life is dangerously close to a big brother state. It is certainly searching without a warrant or just cause.

no, this isnt about stopping DUIs at all. it's simply a PR stunt by the cops to try to justify their ridiculously high budget.

14 officers*3 hours=42 man hours+ 15% overhead=48.3 hours @~$40/hr = ~$1932.00
Although the loss of business at Dunkin Donuts is also a huge economic impact.

When I went through FCPS, I learned about

Future generations will be living in a world of post 9/11 legislation where anyone who talks about the constitution is an extremist.

Unless i'm swerving, speeding, in a stolen car, etc...I should be able to drive around in this country pursuing happiness ( friday night, it was going to see the "informant) without showing my license to law enforcement.

Yeah, first of all, whatever the cops make per hour should be at least doubled considering the cost to the employer includes their share of FICA, SS, health benefits, admin costs, etc.
Then, it isn't just the hourly rate of the people, but also the costs for equipment and resources.
I'm sure all 14 cops left their cars running for that 3 hour road block. Plus batteries for their mag lights, and flares, and whatever else.
All that just to get MADD off their backs and score a few points for being "protect and serve" superheroes to the few people who still fear the drunk driver as the biggest scourge of society.
I'd be a little more comfortable with a rush hour road block to catch texters and cell phone talkers. They could ask to see every driver's cell phone and would check to see if they had used the phone or sent a text message within the last few minutes.
Actually, I wouldn't be comfortable with that either, no matter how much I hate that sort of behavior. Wholesale sweeps of every citizen in order to stop one or two "criminals" just doesn't sit well in a free society.
Or at least, it shouldn't. But I guess as long as enough people are no longer free due to an irrational fear, none of us will ever live in a free society again.

I went through a checkpoint and officer lardass was strategically set up next to the costco mix of chips box, and the cooler of cokes. So i asked piggy for a bag of chips since I am helping funding this.He wiped the doritos out of his cop stache and said naw, boss aint having that.fucking fat dude.how bout u lardos buy some gatorade and powerbars or somethin instead.then id be ok with funding that.
