What Ever Happened to Roy Rogers?
Posted by: Mr. Misery ()
Date: September 20, 2009 02:16PM

Roy Rogers has the best fast-food chicken. Ever. It blows Popeyes and KFC out of the water. So what ever happened to Roy Rogers? There are still a couple in Leesburg that I know about, and there used to be one in Sterling on Route 7 years and years ago; but mostly, you only see them at highway rest stops anymore. What's up with that? Some areas of the country seem to have a disproportionate amount of certain fast-food chains...in the Boca Raton area of Florida, they had an Arby's just about on every block. A little further north, Checkers is all over the place. In West Virginia and Ohio, you can't go 5 miles without running into a Cracker Barrel.

And maybe a little off the topic, but I still find it really weird everytime I pass by that lone Long John Silver's on Leesburg Pike going into Falls Church. It's like driving along and all of a sudden seeing a dinosaur standing by the side of the road. Krazy...

...and don't tell me to STFU. Genuine responses only, please.

There's a Roy Rogers somewhere on Rt. 1, I believe.

I've also lamented the lack of Long John Silver's presence around here. I used to work at one back in the day, and get nostalgic for the food sometimes.

The Roy's you're missing has been gone for many years. Marriott Corp owned it...I can't remember exactly how it went down but I think Hardees bought them out, turned Roy's locations into Hardees, and in a few years they failed and Hardees headed back wherever they came from.

The few existing Roy's today have nothing to do with the old Marriott Roy's....I assume they bought the rights/logos from Marriott or Hardees. I wonder if Roy Roger's (the man) estate sold out or still gets royalties??

But, you're right, the old Roy's was pretty good for a fast food joint! Real roast beef, not that factory pressed shit like at Arby's!

There's a Roy Rogers on 28 in Manassas/Manassas Park. There's also one in the strip mall at the intersection of 7900, Manchester, and Beulah.

You can also go to New Jersey, they're in every freaking rest area there. Refinance your house though, because it's mad freaking expensive.

Exactly, all company owned Roys (the vast majority) were sold to a Canadian holding company that owned Hardees. The majority of these were converted to Hardees - and later practicaly all of the restaurants were sold to and converted to McDonalds.

There were very few franchised Roys that chose to stay Roys. One is in Frederick.

More complicated then that, but yes. They retained the Roys name and logos and did not take place in the Hardees sale.

No, his original agreement with Marriot called for roayalty payments for x number of years which has long since past - as has Roy himself.

Another one is at the strip mall where Beulah and FFX County Parkway meet.

Oh, for those high school jokes about going through the Roy Rogers' drive through and asking for a "Trigger Burger," or asking through the microphone, "My friend and I had a question and we know that someone here can help; "Roy's horse was Trigger, what was Dale's horse's name? we'll wait here while you ask around. Thanks!"

BTW, after the second scenario made its way across the country, corporate sent out a memo informing all managers "Dale's horse's name was "Buttermilk."

Happy Trails!

I gotta ask you. Why is it politically correct to name a restaurant "Cracker Barrel?"

I take offense to the name.

How'd you like it if I opened a chain of restaurants called " Nigger Bucket?"

By "North of Boca" I assume that you mean Delray Beach? They have a real nice Checkers on Atlantic.

I feel your pain, there used to be a Roy Rogers in Reston near the Sheraton (Next to the Highest Building, the "International Center"), but that went out a while ago with the Popeyes move. Popeyes used to be over in Hunter Mill, and that was a good one, until they put a McD's there, and now there's nothing.

I hate the fact that the closest Checkers around here is in Manassas, and the closest Roy Rogers in Leesburg. I have no idea why we have to drive out to the boonies to go to either of those places.

BTW, as for Cracker Barrel, they're all up and down I-95, and their food is damn good.

I AM glad that Reston at least has Silver Diner, but why they did away with Memphis BBQ, I'll never know.

I could've sworn that there used to be one in Fairfax City as well.

And while we're at it, what's the deal with all of the damn Sonics commercials? The only one I've ever seen or been to was in Newport News.

First, I believe there is a Sonic in Fredericksburg.

Second, the Fixins Bar that Roy's had back in the day was the best idea ever. You load up on onions, pickles or whatever you wanted. Now you just get whatever grade D produce those other joints just toss on there.

Ditto on the fixins bar. I still recall with great fondness meeting a hot blonde from Mclean when we accidentally jostled each other for more pickles. Oh, the memories.

Yeah, the Einstein Bagels in Fairfax City used to be a Roy Rogers wayyy back.

I have been to the one on Rt28, the one down near Mt Vernon Hospital on Rt1, and the one in Leesburg.

I spoke to the folks at the Rt1 location and they indicated that there was a push to open more Roy Rogers locations again in the area but that was about 3 years ago. If you look at what happened with Chick-fil-A in Fairfax City you would understand why nothing new has opened there recently. There are pad sites available, but the Council doesn't like approving new fast food (even decent ones) places if there is any hint of public disapproval in the location. Now instead you have new strip centers being built with places like Five Guys, and new banks everywhere. Much more important to stick a bank or Rite Aid/CVS on every corner for some reason.

Short answer - Roy Rogers was killed by Hardees.

The Roy Rogers chicken flavor originated from Pappy Parkers recipe that was transferred by Marriott from it's Jr. Hot Shoppes brand. Without getting into too much detail, Marriott formed 3 distinct concept chains in the mid 1960's. The first was Mighty Mo which specialized in hamburgers. Second was Jr. Hot Shoppes (AKA Hot Shoppe Junior) which specialized in Pappy Parkers chicken and finally Roy Rogers which specialized in roast beef. Mighty Mo had a few units with little success. Jr Hot Shoppes had multiple locations that fed off the popularity of the Hot Shoppe name. Roy Rogers was most successful due to tie in with the Roy Rogers character. By the mid 70's Mighty Mo was long gone. Most Jr Hot Shoppe locations were renamed Roy Rogers featuring Pappy Parker Fried Chicken. Roys tinkered with the menu and did very well combining the concepts of Mighty Mo and Jr Hot Shoppes. The brand was still profitable when Marriott decided to exit the fast food business to concentrate on its core Hotel and institutional food service operations. Marriott sold Roy Rogers to Hardees. Hardees fucked with the menu, destroying the chicken and burgers. Customers revolted, but by then the damage was done. Thankfully a few wise operators still maintain the brand and the delicious food. I hope they expand, but not too quickly like Five Guys and get all fucked up again. Five guys was great when it was a few local locations, now it tastes like shit.

Anyone remember the multiple murder at Roy Rogers in Landmark? It was a robbery went wrong.

Marriot did do a short stint with a super Roy Rogers (not sure what the actual name was). It was on corner of 123 and Nutley, a converted older Roy Rogers. They had a opening day celebration with cowboys and horses. Their cut potatoes, 1/3rd lb bacon cheeseburger and hot BBQ sauce scooped from a kettle was the best thing in the world. They were the first fastfood place I saw TVs in as well. Soon after arrival of that awesome place Roys got sold. And that super Roy Rogers became some sort of a texmex place.

There is a great Roy's on Route 9 in Jefferson County, WV. While coming back from Shepherdstown yesterday a colleague and I picked Roy's over the nostalgic McDonalds across the freeway.

I find hard to believe that Pantera has come to the same area.

Who knows? Perhaps next the Charlie Brown Store will get closed by authorities for all the bongs and wrappers available.

Get used to that sort of thing....the States are so broke that they are selling their highway rest stops to private companies, who naturally are going to put their shit in there.

In the news just this week...the State of Connecticut is turning over all their rest stops to the Carlyle Group, a private equity outfit that owns Subway and Dunkin Donuts. If you're traveling through CT and want something other than a crappy sub or donuts, you're going to have to take an exit off the highway.

...where Old Mill Rd. and Rt.1 meet going southbound on Rt.1. Mt.Vernon Memorial Highway is on the otherside of the intersection northbound. Woodlawn Plantation/Frank loyd Wrights Pope Leighey House Museum is directly across Old Mill Rd. from it. Good ppl run the place and work there. Having it less than a mile from where I live has been a godsend...the guy who owns it started off dead broke and has since made a freaking fortune...well deserved I might add. They know how to make my large roast beef sandwiches when I come in..mm MM!!

I found the LJC in falls church to be disgustingly dirty and yes I worked fast food as a yute.
Checkers use to have great hamburgers but a few years after they opened in manassas it seemed like they changed meat suppliers and the new stuff was gamey and way to salty
As for Roy rogers, I bet when mcdonald's bought out hardees along with the roys they owned in the area the deal probably closed off fairfax county to seeing any new roy roger's opening up in the county for like forever. I believe the Roy rogers in leesburg are owned by the gentleman who originally came up with the idea for a roy rogers chain when he worked at marriott. Think his two sons now run the operation with most of the other roy rogers they run north of leesburg up into maryland. As for the roy's in manassas park and the two down route 1 I believe they are owned by a company that was part of the Hardees chain but was a subsidary. So when Mcdonalds bought out the Hardees in the area owned by the canadian outfit they didn't get those locations. Have no idea who owns the roys up north on 95.
I sure wish Sonics would come to this area. Sure doesn't seem like much variety. Just not a big fan of the food at Chick Fil A. it's okay but just too healthy tasting and the religious overtones of the place give me the creeps. Have you noticed how the jr. burgers at wendy's keep getting smaller and smaller at same price. And what happened to the A&W out in chantilly, was combined with a nowadays boring KFC. A&W burgers reminded me a bit of the burgers you'd get at hot shoppes way back back back

Double R Bar, Hamburger with ham on top and BBQ sauce= genious, best taste combo for a burger.
Too bad the Roys near me is the one in Manassas, filthy ass joint that place is, unfortunately almost every fast food joint in Manassas is like that.

The Roy Rogers Roast Beef Resturants were the best fast foods in the Washington DC area, as well as other areas. They provided wholesome food for years, started many a teenager on their first job, along with providing good income for many many people during the years. The success of the original Marriott Roy Rogers can be laid to Mr. Pete Plamondon, originally a senior vice president, who in later years became a very successful franchisee in the Frederick Maryland area, where the concept still thrives today. Mr Plamondon's ideals of perfection was instilled in many of the Roy Rogers managers, which is what help make them successful for so many years, and due to his personal standards, why the franchise still succeeds in Frederick Md and adjoining areas today.

back in 1978 I worked for Roy Rogers in Alexandria, at the actual site where the walkin cooler murders happened...there were stainless steel plates all over the cooler to hide the bullet holes...pretty scary for an 18 year old midwest girl that the worst thing that ever happened was a car accident...YES, the burgers were THE BEST short of a Lum's Ollie burger...now that I am back in the midwest, I truely miss those places and try hard to emulate them but still haven't gotten them just right yet...also, if you remember Roy Rogers in the DC area, do any of you remember any of these other landmark places...The Plumb disco, Tammany Hall on Penn Ave, The Roxy in Arlington, The Spaghetti Mill in Annadale, Maxim's in Reston in the Dominion National Bank Building, or.....my favorite memory, ...Fantastic Fritzbee's Flying Food Factory

I totally went into a Roy Rogers frenzy myself, I freaking loved it. I ate it once at the one Alexandria and it was the nastiest fast food I ever ate, I was too sad to look into what the hell happened to this once great fast food place but since that was a few years ago, I appreciate the info about it. Am I the only one who liked to eat 5,000 pickles from the fixings bar?

LOL

Me and some co-workers used to go to the Roy's in Chinatown long ago (where RFD is now). Two of the guys were gluttonous cheapskates with absolutely no shame. They would freekin raid the fixin's bar like vultures. They would even stuff sandwich wrappers full of pickles and take them back to the office. It was sort of embarrassing but actually kinda funny. They'd even steal stacks of tomatoes and keep them in the office fridge to put on sandwiches later in the week!

Your comment makes me laugh cuz the one guy would seriously eat about a hundred pickle chips everytime we went there.

I remember I had a friend that worked at the Roy Rogers in Chantilly back in '98. When she told me that they were all closing we went on a "Roy Rogers Tour" one day. We started out in Leesburg and made it to Alexandria. I think we hit up 4 0r 5.

Remember the cafeteria-style Roy Rogers in Tysons Corner? That was great!

Roy's on Route 28 Manassas Park could stand for improvement
I think that one still owned by parent company of the old Hardees and suffers from neglect from parent company

the ones in Leesburg are superior imo, they are run by the family of the gentleman who came up with the concept of Roy's when he was working at Marriott

wish they would expand into Fairfax County but have a feeling McDonald's prevents them from opening Roy's because of the purchase of Hardee's(Roy's) restaurants in Fairfax county

Though it does need work inside ,I like going to the Manassas Park Roy's because Nathan's Dairy Bar is down the street.

I remember some of the jingle. I worked at the one at Lee hwy and 123 in Fairfax City in the mid 80's. It too became a Hardee's. Then they tore the building down and a Rite-Aid is on the site

There is a Roy Rogers at one of those rest stops in MD, Chesapeak House or something????

Anyway, it was some of the worst roast beef I've ever had.

It's a shame because they use to be pretty good.

I believe the official Roy rogers museum had to close down recently due to lack of funds. maybe the owners of the roy rogers restaurants in these parts could buy the stuffed Trigger and put it on display on a rotating basis in the d.C. area stores

happy trails to you m'effer

That Roy's doesn't seem to be owned by the same company that runs the one's in Leesburg and the recently opened one in Manassas on Sudley Road.

Complete list at http://www.royrogersrestaurants.com/locations/

The most authentic (just as outstanding as you remember them from the 1970s-80s) Roy Rogers are in Eastern Fairfax County at Manchester Lakes (Rt 7900, Franconia Springfield Parkway and Beulah), Woodlawn/Mt Vernon (US Route 1, Old Mill Rd, Mt Vernon Memorial Highway), and Belle Haven (Bellview Blvd). Same outstanding food, original BBQ sauce, Fixin' Bar and great service/friendly staff just like you remember. Highly recommended!!!

There are others owned by different remaining franchisees, including several in Leesburg VA/Frederick MD (pretty good, but not quite as good as the Eastern Fairfax County restaurants), and of course those of the "NJ turnpike" variety that give the Roy's legacy a bad name (generally overpriced, mediocre quality and mediocre service).

There's a lot of buzz about GINO's returning to Baltimore and next DC, but they won't have Kentucky Fried Chicken, so this talk of Roy Rogers caught my attention.

Doesn't Marriot still own the Roy's chicken recipe and use it in their food service biz?

And if they don't, why would Carl's Jr/Hardees have ditched the recipe to a small time Roy's franchise owner with no money?
