When I was a teenager acting like I had rights, I was told I had none.

Only if they're American.

If you're a 13 year old girl in VA, you can get an abortion without parental consent.

But the same teen girl can't smoke, drink, vote or own a firearm.

Kids absolutely do have constitutional rights, and the Fairfax County Public Schools system played a small part in affirming that their students have the right of free speech.

In 1976, Hayfield Secondary Principal Doris Torrice precipitated a controversy over an article proposed for the student newspaper, The Farm News, when she required that parts of the article, titled "Sexually Active Students Fail to Use Contraception", be removed before she would allow publication.

The article's author, 17-year-old editor Lauren Boyd and assistant editor Gina Gambino, appealed Torrice's decision, first to Superintendent S. John Davis and then to the Fairfax County School Board, which voted on December 6 to affirm Davis' decision.

Unsatisfied with this result, Boyd and Gambino literally made a Federal case out of the situation and sued the School Board for infringing on their first amendment rights.

District Court Judge Albert V. Bryan, Jr. overruled the School Board's censorship in a decision issued on February 23, 1977.

Being sore losers and having access to a huge supply of taxpayer money to pay for expensive lawyers, the school board appealed the decision, which was affirmed by the United States Court of Appeals, Fourth Circuit, on October 17, 1977.

The 4th Circuit's decision, Gambino v. Fairfax County School Board, can be found at http://openjurist.org/564/f2d/157/gambino-v-fairfax-county-school-board-s-t-m-h-g-j-e-s

if you grew up on the fringe of settling the west, and didn't eat on the days your dad's gun wasn't working - you'd get a fire-arm at 13 if you worked to afford it

you grew up on xbox - hell no on weapons - your not gteting a fire-arm until your old enough to be president (that's 25)

parents have the right to decide what is in their child's BEST INTEREST (and how to raise the child so that the Constitution will be a centerpiece in life as if it were a stone in a foundation) - but no they don't have the right to lie or harass to harm the child - unless it's punishment, their method of preventing more bad behavior, of course

You're not legally old enough to be a president until 35.

it's the right of a judge (or congress) to decide if the Constitution is broken, that some individual is loosing rights at the price of some other's enrichment (for parents, that could be just a chip on their shoulder, but may be real wisdom)

it's the right of a baby-sitter to decide what is best for a child while caring for another's child - UNTIL the parent is notified of some situation

IT WAS AND ISN'T EVER THE RIGHT OF A SCHOOL SYSTEM TO DECIDE FOR A PARENT WHEN THE PARENT HAS SAID "hell no obama - that's not the way my kid will be raised"

ONLY A JUDGE (or in commonwealth a body of known previous decisions) CAN remove rights of the parent in a particular decision, not a school gov worker

--------------------------------
the right to perseverence (to work to support oneself without interference from government), the right to persue happiness (did NOT mean to seek parties)

it means people have the right to seek success, not have someone else feed them rules from gloating books of losses (ie, modern school textbooks) and abide by them though they are not law and never will be

it's true parents can abuse their children and get away with it

it's also true someone who witnesses it might totally kick their ass when they see it, and not be punished for doing so
