Does anyone not like the Vienna Inn?

A better question would be "why does anyone like the Vienna Inn?" That place is a dive. A friend took me there once. I will never go back.

Not next to it, but nearby.

I like the place. It's a dive, the waitresses are surly, cheap beer and greasy bar food. What's not to like? If you're walking in here expecting the Ritz-Carlton, you'll be sorely disappointed. But for what it is, it's great.

The waitresses are all in high school. The food is decent for what theyserve. The service sucks. They screw your order up and put it back in - at the end of the line. You then wait twice as long to get food. Not sure if they people behind the bar own the place but they need to keep a better handle on the wait staff.

I haven't been there in awhile, so that must have changed. The waitresses used to be a bunch of older women who that never smiled and displayed a clear sense of soup-nazish unfriendliness.

IT MIGHT BE OK IF it dodn't double as a fucking kindergarten half the time, to many kids running around with their wanky drawings all over the fucking place.

Yeah, the old waitresses retired about the time the place was sold ~ 8-10 years ago.
And the waitresses now are college age (21+ duh).

Food is still great dive food. If you expect the Inn at Little Washington food, you're basically a dumbass.

And yes, the service is uneven....just STFU and order more $1.65 beers while you wait. Make sure you ask your server to "keep em comin", or she might indeed forget you.

The VI is basically THE family sports spot in Vienna. If you don't like kids, go to Arlington, dumbass. And if you REALLY hate kids/youth, never go to the VI on game day for either Madison or Oakton.

PS I highly recommend the Chicken Fajita Wrap. Or the filet mignon special--yes, I said filet mignon. $15.99. And of course, the chili dogs are world-renowned.

PPS The owner of the VI also owns Church St Pizza, out the back door and around the corner. Excellent NY-style pizza.

While we are talking about Vienna, there is some new restaurant across from Magruder's in this really old building (has a 1950s look) It was a Mexican food place only a couple of months ago.

Anybody tried it?

Blessed are the murderous.

You mean that tiny crappy place that used to be Anitas? Its gone thru 3-4 manifestations since then. I tried the Salvadorean version (sucked) and the hoagie version (sucked more).

Good luck to whatever it is now. It has to overcome the ghosts of some very awful restauranteurship.

Yeah, that is the place, must have been the Salvadorean version that I saw. The building design looks like the original Dairy King (yes, king) from the 50s and 60s.

BTW, for such a wealthy town as Vienna, that Magruder's has got to be the trashiest grocer in NOVA. Even the Bottom Dollar/Food Lions that are in Dale City look better than that place.

Blessed are the murderous.

That's because Magruder's is notoriously cheap. The one along Kenmore Ave near 395/Shrilington Road is just as gross. The Vienna one looks the same inside as it did when I was growing up in Vienna. They probably signed a 50 year lease or something, so there's no need to invest in renovating.

To get back on topic, I like the Vienna Inn. It's supposed to be a no-frills tavern.

And for those of you looking for keg beer...

http://www.viennainn.com/ordereze/Content/4/Summary.aspx

They used to have actual voice recordings, on the website, of Mollie (the previous owner's wife) tossing insults as patrons walked in. If you were ever there in the 80s or 90s, you know what I mean. If you weren't ready to order when she waited on you, you were SOL. Big time.

I'm trying to think what it is now. I passed it a couple of weeks ago and said "Oh.. it's something else.........again"

Not sure what it is about that location. It's right against the road.. so the location is pretty good. Just shitty ideas going in there?

Actually, all the ceiling tiles, well-seasoned from a unique blend of 4,000,000 cigarettes and hot dog grease, were replaced about 5 years ago after a kitchen fire.

I hate it when tradition fades like that.

We went there on Thursday. It was surprisingly good. A bit on the pricey side, but good.

I think we finally have a winner there.

Maple Ave. is excellent and fairly economical. I seem to recall a they have some pre-fixe small plates special for under $20. I really liked their asian dumplings.

Vienna Inn has good (not great) chili dogs and cheap beer (like $1.50 a draft). Other than that, they must be paying off the health inspectors to stay in business. I recommend this place, but you're better off if you go when you are still drunk from the night before.

I went there once after moving in. The waitress seemed okay and so was the food, but my wife wasn't really taken with the wobbly chairs and general dive atmosphere.

I've never really enjoyed the 'Coyote Ugly' routine where rudeness on the staff's part is part of the 'fun' (and ditto the over-enthusiasm of the Hooters girls.)

Vienna Inn is great. You can ply yourself with grease and cheap beer. Then stumble next door to the Town Green where you sit and smell car exhaust until you feel a serious bowel movement coming on, At that point you run to the public restroom, only to find it locked. At least if it is dark you can leave a steamer in the flower bed.

All I have to say is, it is safer to eat there when you drink the beer. Alcohol is great for killing nasty things that might escape into your stomach...

Indeed, alcohol does disinfect, however you need a much higher proof than the swill they offer there. Besides it being a dive-hole, they don't sell hard liquor.

Speaking of which, I'm a little curious about the Cedar Lounge (in Cedar Park Center). When did it close, or is it the bar part of the Hunan Delight Restaurant?

Neighbors and Cedar Lounge are (or were) two different places. Neighbors is down at the end of the shopping center. Cedar Lounge was up toward the other end next to the Chinese place. I was just over there last week and saw the sign for Cedar Lounge, so I'm guessing it's still there. I didn't notice if Neighbors was still open. I like that place.

Neighbors is at the other end of the plaza from the Cedar Lounge, and yes, the Cedar Lounge is the bar for Hunan Delight. I didn't know it closed, actually, but it is/was a tiny place...no big loss if it did.

Neighbors is still the hangout for the VYI football and Vienna Little League coaches and team parties. And I think Monday nites are still "half-price burger" nites. Cheap beer, incredibly smoky bar, and big party rooms in the back. And the only place I've ever seen a woman with neck to ankle to wrist tattoos--95% of her body. Unreal.

Hunan Delight is pretty good, actually. Im not sure how they stay in business; there's never much of a crowd when I've been there. They have some inexpensive Sunday Brunch thing, too, but I cant say I've ever been.

The Szchewan (sp?) green beans and chicken is great. Esp "extra spicy". Not sure if its on the menu, but they make it anyway.
