Folks have recently learned that no metro maintenance was done for 40 years. Now the Feds are involved and we are suffering through a year or more of emergency maintenance and major service disruptions. New management at WMATA fired a bunch of people, but there's been no talk of a criminal investigation into the sheer incompetence and mismanagement that lead to this. Why no criminal investigation or sanction for the teams that were in change while the system rotted away? Why did the Feds miss this as well?

No one gave them money for maintenance -- Not their fault.

They didn't have the employees for maintenance work -- Not their fault.

Money was allocated for general upkeep of the Metro system. Repair equipment, and repair crews were paid to keep the system maintained.

Where did all of that money go?

What have the repair crews been doing for the last few decades?

I smell a huge amount of embezzlement and misdirecting of funds for personal gain of a select group in Metro Management.

The Metro is by far the safest way to travel in our region.
Safer than,

Walking
Cycling
Driving
Horse
Skateboard
VRE
Marc

Some maintenance was done, but it wasn't enough and frequently wasn't done properly. A lot of times it was the equivalent band aids and Robitussin.

This is a combination of managerial incompetence and, more importantly, failure to appropriate the needed funds to do the work.

Politicians love to apportion cash for new infrastructure, such as the Silver line, because it serves as a stimulus for development.

When you get to the boring part of actually keeping the damned thing from falling apart, they're a lot less inclined to spend the money.

They need to scrap the entire system because it is a total waste of money.

Fire all of those useless employees, and let the Japanese or the Germans built a proper mass transit system that is light years ahead of the Metro System.

An investigation has been undertaken.
