Assuming that it is a US Secret Service protective detail, you can count on a pretty nice collection of firepower within close proximity:

* Sig Sauer P229 (.357 caliber)
* Remington 870 12 gauge shotgun
* Uzi
* MP5

There may also be a larger cache of tactical weapons at their disposal.

Uzi? I doubt it. Probably the PDW also by HK, same ammo as mp5.

Uzi is a very good guess. Those SUV's are also VERY heavy. They may look like regular vehicles but they have armor plating plus. Also the motorcade is larger than you think. You are seeing the vehicles the SS wants you to see.

One of my neighbors was on the PPD for about nine years, first w/Reagan in California and then with Clinton. He spent 24 months as part of the 'tactical assault team' (not really sure of the name, but the job was basically to take out whomever was trying to take out the protectee). Dressed in black BDUs with an AWESOME weapons cache in his personal armored Suburban. They work on the perimeter, so, as he described it, "if you see us on TV, something very bad has happened".

I worked in DC 6 years ago and I remember one motorcade going down Constitution Ave during the evening rush. This is something MPD or whomever try to avoid at all costs. I was a passenger in a small car with my 4 fellow carpoolers. We were stuck in absolute grid lock. We couldn't move more than two inches and here comes this punk ass motorcade for some third rate dignitary.

Once again, we were completely gridlocked. The motorcade comes up behind us and is stuck also. We had to wait at least 10 minutes before we could move through an intersection. During this time all the cars move over as much as they can and the motorcade still can't get through. What do they do? The entire 10 minutes the Secret Service guys hang out of the suvs screaming at us. The entire time. Screaming. Everyone ignored them. Someone behind us yelled for them to shut up.

Who do these guys think they are? Most commuters in dc are so hardened and hell bent to get home that they'd risk driving by tank man. A tractor trailer loaded with unstable gun powder - hell, we gotta get home. A jumper on a bridge - lemme give him a push.

"Most commuters in dc are so hardened and hell bent to get home that they'd risk driving by tank man"

What does this sentence mean? Someone explain?

Yeah I second that one, I was just about to ask him to clarify what risk is involved with driving a tank home.

I wonder why if they are so important they cant take a helicopter? Especially if they are going to an airport. I am sure there is a place to land there.
Anyone who has lived here more than a year knows that just hitting a siren and yelling wont open up traffic. When traffic is blocked in both directions it just isnt going anywhere. Hitting the sirens just make it worse.

Anyone beyond the president and vice president doesnt rate a motorcade with lights and siren.

I ran into them. 20+ motorcycle cops and 10 buses on 28. Closed 28 up so you couldn't get near the buses. They got off on 50 west and then ran into them again off of westfields Blvd where they went into some plain looking building.

Yep, saw the same Motorcade today in the Tysons corner area. Over 2 dozen motorcycles of strictly Fairfax County Police, 9 Buses. They shut the "Inner Loop" of 495 from route 66 to Tysons. They took the Rte123 exit into Tysons business district and we los t sight of them. Then, 15 minutes later they crossed over to enter the Tysons Shopping Mall area, and again, we lost sight of them. This was an unusual amount of Law Enforcement escorting "Tour Buses". No Black SUV's were sighted, although one Silve Suburban did join after the Tysons Business pit stop.

This is really weird because I saw a unmarked black Crown Vic with blue/red emergency lights, a really solid looking black Cadillac, and a Black Suburban/Tahoe/Big SUV with red emergency lights and very mean looking dudes in suits in the back with the windows rolled down coming out of the Mantech parking lot at the Fair Oaks Mall.

I mention the blue/red emergency lights because I'm fairly certain that VA law enforcement agencies are suppose to be running all blue lights now, which leads me to believe they were feds.

Of course they're feds. BTW Metropolitan Washington Airports Authority police still use red lights as do WMATA Police though the metro police also operate in MD and DC obviously.
