The last two times I moved, I just hired 4 day laborers and rented a u-haul truck. I packed up my own stuff, and had them load and unload it from the truck.
I Guaranteed them 8 hours of work, paid them 10 bucks/hour each, fed them lunch, gave them plenty of gatorade, told them to take breaks, and then tipped them 20 dollars each. I also told them I'd bring them back to the pick-up site, or to their home, whichever they wanted.
They had the entire house loaded in under 2 hours, came with me to the new house, and had it unloaded in 3 hours. This was last year during the July heatwave where it hit 99 that day. Not a single item was broken, nothing was missing, I didn't have any scratches or dings in the furniture. I just stood by the door and told them what number room that the box/item went to. I ran out of things to do for them after 5 hours, so they started assembling beds/shelving/desks and re-aranging the furniture. When I took them home, they all gave me their cell phone numbers, and told me that If I ever needed anything done again, to call.
All told, I spent about 500 dollars total for the move, and got much better service than I ever did with a professional moving company that I used for 8 moves while in the military.
People can bitch and moan about hiring illegals and day laborers from herndon, but they've been more honest and reliable than anyone else I've dealt with.
