Sometime people give away free wood on Craigslist, when they have to cut down a tree or something. Like this: http://washingtondc.craigslist.org/nva/zip/1331382418.html

You used to be able to get bags of the different wood chips at Barbecues Galore in Fair Lakes, but they are out of business now. Perhaps there is another BBQ store in the area that carries them?

BBQs Galore has the best selection (apple, pecan, etc.) but Home Depot has the best prices and the basics (hickory & Mesquite)

Hickory and Mesquite can be found at Lowes and Home Depot. Their selection is usually limited to chips, but occasionally you'll find chunks and logs there as well. *RARELY* will they have Apple wood.

Hunter Hardware in Springfield commonly carries Hickory, Mesquite, Apple, and Cherry wood chips.

I've heard that Sears (one off Rt. 7 in Falls Church) also sells Oak chips.

World Market in Fairlakes sells some of the more unusual (Alder, cabernet soaked, etc.) but you will pay a little more for them due to the World Market markup.

I believe Ace Hardware in Chantilly also sells them, but I haven't actually checked. I'm sure they'll sell Hickory and Mesquite, but they may sell other kinds.

Beyond that, you'll have to drive into Maryland or go through an internet company to buy chips.

boredom's onto something -- I think most of the small hardware stores like Stalcups, Mclean, Cherrydale, carry stuff like that.

You can usually find small bags of mesquite chips at Giant.
