Garza and Lockard are well paid. Why is FCPS paying for this? Some may say, "it was only $33.13" but this happens all the time, and it adds up.

Let well paid FCPS administrators pay for their own means. If they **really** needed to discuss the leadership retreat, they could have done it in their offices, right around the corner from the Silver Diner.

There's also the question of the cost and value of the leadership retreat, but that's another topic.

from pg 236 of the FY2016 Approved Budget for FCPS - the number of Seniors that can achieve the School Board target to pass the 5 core (reading, writing, math, science and social studies) SOL subject tests has dropped from 78% in 2010 to 71% in 2014 (last reported data).

So, 29% of the seniors in FCPS can't pass all the SOLs... So much for one of the best school systems in the country - lol

And as a result of this poor performance the Administration is changing the rules of the game to focus on "Portrait of a Graduate" - without any meaningful or comparable measurement metrics BUT it "goes beyond test scores to the skills, knowledge, and understanding that are most needed for FCPS graduates to be successful in the 21st century". Of course none of these skills, knowledge of understanding can be tested... You can't make this stuff up.

But all they need to rectify the situation is MORE MONEY!

The path to success is not intelligence, hard work, good ideas or even an MBA or MD degree.

What you need is an online Ed.D. degree. FCPS has shown that's the way to go. You'll get a six figure salary (Garza gets $300,000), paid meals, paid travel, and you won't have to work very hard. If you can say "this matter is closed" that's all you really need to know.

Going from a board of supervisors/elected school board to a city government would disrupt power structures that have been in place for a long time.

These people, and their "friends" do very well off of the current arrangement and see no reason to change. Yes, greater taxation power is an incentive, but the fact that there would be more oversight, and the ability to toss a bungling superintendent makes them think twice about it.

When (not IF) the meals tax is defeated, the wheels of change may begin to grind,but slowly...
