Take your own trash to the dump on W. Ox

Does anybody not have trash service and just take their stuff to the "Solid Waste Transfer Station" (aka "the dump") on West Ox Road? Seems like you could save a few $$/mo. if you have a pickup or an old suv to take the stuff there once or twice a month.

I don't know about that. I had a buddy who lived outside of Stafford that didn't get trash pick up - he had to haul it all to the dump. Not because he was a cheapass, they just didn't get it. He'd stockpile it and take it every two weeks. The entire back of his house smelled like a dump - even when the trash had been missing for a few days. Gross

Trash pick up: Some things are worth the extra money.

Yeah. I suppose if you were to have a stinky stockpile in two weeks. That could be gross.

I hauled trash with or for my family to that station growing up... we were taking trash there back in the days when you would drive up the "trash hill" that faces 66, and bury it!

You may save a few bucks, but it is a bit more hazardous than not doing it, and your gas mileage may get killed by the load in your car... not to mention it can be a tad confusing to know what to do when you're in there.

Grew up here.. once Fairfax County stopped doing residential trash pickup at some of the schools years back (they did at Oakton Elem) my parents started going to the I-66 station. They still do it.

Once a week trip to get rid of 1 or 2 trash cans. I think they pay ~$6 a week to do it. Hell of a lot cheaper than AAA charges.

A hell of a lot cheaper than AAA?

I pay AAA about $8 a week. Including gas, going to I-66 would cost very close to that, not counting traffic hassles.

Plus, AAA carts off an almost unlimited amount of trash, plus leaves in the Fall....yard waste, etc.

I grew up on farm in the stix and there was no trash pick-up whatsoever.
We burned all the paper stuff and all the food scraps went to a hog farmer
down the road. (he did pick it up) Everything else was trucked to the
dump. We would save metal things until we had enough to take to a scrap
dealer. Inconvenient perhaps, but that's how its done "down yonder and up
the holler".

Interestingly, that hill on the top of the dump is the highest point in Fairfax County. Went up there in teh spring to get some mulch and its not a bad view, if you don't mind the smell.

When I saw the condo's being built downwind from there (next to Costco
and Home Depot) I thought "My God that's gonna stink". Yep, it does.

The highest point in the county (naturally) is the hill north of 50 on Ox Hill Rd. That's why the water tanks are there. Tyson's is second.
