Reports coming in - A toddler in 1 foot of water was eaten alive by a Alligator. The family was witness to the snatching, and police search teams are probing the man made lagoon for the 4 to 7 foot alligator.

Pretty much every pond or lake from SC southward has at least one gator in it. Why they would let a small child into one of these bodies of water is highly questionable.

We need alligator ponds here. Stupid parents running their kids through the fountains and ignoring the keep out signs.

They are even in North Carolina. There's a pond behind a shopping center on the same barrier island that EI is on. Right behind the Rucker John's Restaurant (one of the anchor businesses there). One the shopping center side it's elevated and fenced, so there's no chance that gator could get out that way, but the other side is lined with houses.

People in North Carolina say that every once in a while they see gators in the ocean. Every year we go to the beach and I go to the sound side wading around throwing out a casting net for shrimp and minnows. I sure hope that I never encounter a croc!

The lagoon featured a sandy beach area where the guests could relax, sunbathe, and enter the water. They resort also employed a lifeguard to protect the guests.

The family of the toddler was with the child as it was wading in about a foot of water. The Alligator snatch up the child at the waters edge, and disappeared with the toddler in it's jaws.

The father attempted to rescue the child by wrestling with the Alligator, but his efforts failed.

The resort lifeguard was on duty, and was witnessed to the attack, but there are no details as to the amount of assistance the lifeguard rendered.

He blew the whistle.

That is the training for the new foreign staff Disney now employs.

Sorry, but you're wrong. It was made clear that there were several signs posted that said no swimming. Why Disney doesn't have the water roped off (at least) is beyond me. I say fence it all off.

I was just there this last April, at a resort very close to the Grand Floridian. There was a 4 foot long gator in the lagoon there that people were feeding. My kid and I were watching it from the deck about 5 feet away. That thing looked way to small to do anything like this. The one that got that kid today had to be much bigger.

No.of alligators x No.of tourists + lbs. of food x No.of days = Size of alligator

CNN is reporting the boy’s body has been recovered. So sad.

I moved from Fairfax to Tampa last fall and yes gators are in almost every retention pond around. No getting around that. And they have signs posted no swimming for a reason. They said they will remove people if they go in the water. Guess the gator beat them to it.

The reason most attacks by Alligators have been in fresh water is because Alligators live ONLY in fresh water.

Alligators can and do have brief contact with saltwater, but the do not stay long. The contact is usually in delta type areas where the salinity of the water is higher than fresh.

Research Saltwater Crocodiles. They are nothing to mess with, and love eating Japanese soldiers.

What Alligators do is first drown their prey, and "stash" the victim underwater, and keep it there until it begins to decompose. As Alligators do mot have the type of teeth designed to slice flesh(like sharks)they wait until the flesh is rotten enough to pull the body apart - Much like a well cooked chicken. Then they eat.

About 15 years ago I worked part time at a small hotel doing landscape/customer service to help pay for college. The hotel was in the central part of the state, so there were alligators about. They was a natural pond adjacent to the hotel grounds, and it had ducks, geese, and alligators.

We would on occasion need to call the alligator relocation people when we found an alligator on the hotel property that would not go away. There was also a fast food restaurant close by, so hotel guests would sometime feed them leftover burgers and whatever.

So as you can surmise, the alligators got accustomed to being fed scraps from Big Macs, french fries, and maybe the odd hot apple pie.

Many of the guests would travel with small dogs, and of course the little dogs needed to be walked - Early in the morning, and late in the evening.

Alligator feeding time.

Several times I witnessed screaming, distressed guests at the customer service desk because a gator at the edge of the pond, jumped out of the water, and snatched up Fluffy. What could we do? The pond wasn't on hotel property, and because the pond was natural it is a protected habitat for the alligators.

Sad to say that family was out at the lagoon during prime alligator feeding time, and offered up their toddler as a mid night snack.

By the way you need a permit to shoot an alligator. Not sure if it would apply to this situation but normally you do.
