Fairfax County General :
Fairfax Underground
Welcome to Fairfax Underground, a project site designed to improve communication among residents of Fairfax County, VA. Feel free to post anything Northern Virginia residents would find interesting.
What happened to Springfield Mall? It was a great hangout in the 70's & 80's. I recently visited and was shocked at how rundown it got. There are now all these vacant rows of stores and the ones that are open are ghetto no-brand places. Jeans West, Merry-Go-Round and Chess King were my favorites and are long gone. It's kind of sad because I spent a lot of time and money there over the years. Now I have no reason to return. Anyone have fun memories of Springfield Mall?
I'm excited about the new town center. I occasionally drive to the one in Reston, and I live very close to Fairfax Corner (similar stores), but I'm also often in the Springfield area for work. I would definitely go back to shopping there too if they can get this together.

That's not true. I saw an asian and a black person in one of the pictures. Maybe they just got rid of all the ones that turned Springfield Mall into what it is today.
With the downturn in the economy, I don't think Vornado is going to be putting forth a lot of earnest effort right now. They also own a ton of buildings in Rosslyn, Crystal City, and DC and they aren't redeveloping shit right now - only finishing was was begun before the bottom fell out.

I think they should tear down Potomac Mills. I remember when I was there one time about 10 years ago and I parked at section 2 and shopped for a bit and the other store I wanted to visit was all the way down in section 8 or something. I was like WTF? I had to walk what seemed to be a mile and a half, then turn around and go back to my car. It's just not a very efficient use of space, not to mention the Woodbridge / Dale City crowd smells like Stetson.
It was never really a high end mall so Tysons ends up getting all that business. Back in the 90's it drew a wannabe thug element which I'm sure did wonders for the elderly and family market segments.
I remember as a kid going to Potomac Mills back when the place smelled like floor wax and those giant tvs that they tried to turn into cartoonish artwork hung from the ceiling. You could hear Phill Collins blasting throughout the place, which was very creepy for a kid lol. I liked that giant fruit fountain that was near the Cinnabun and Sports Authority, that was gone that last time I was there two years ago.

They just got the BOS approval for the redevelopment two weeks ago and already have submitted plans for phase two (400,000+ sqft of new space). I bet Vernado wants to get this jumpstarted soon and the DC economy is one of the strongest in the country and you want to do this while labor and materials are cheap. Plus they want to be up and running when BRAC is completed by 2011. Throughout the whole process they have been pushing FFX County to go faster in getting their plans approved.
Springfield Mall is a microcosm of the general ruination caused by hispanic immigrants in America. What was once a typical Mall bustling with activity and populated by whites has degenerated into a filthy cesspool of drugs gangs and crime populated by dirty lawless hispanics. There is no mystery and no secret.

Time-Out - the chicks you could score in that place were out of this world!
Does the mall still have that store where all the D&D and Warhammer kids used to hang out? It was downstairs at one of the ends...near the Orange Julius back in the day.

I thought Orange Julius was on the top level on the corner next to Time Out 1? And around the corner was the Sport and Hobby Shop, one of two places in the mall you could get D&D stuff, lead figures, etc.

Yeah, Orange Julius was upstairs and that hobby shop was down on the lower level - go down the steps at the OJ, head right and go down about 3 or 4 stores and it was on the left. Nerd central.

Unfortunately our politicians care more about the illegal population than the working class that bankroles their social engineering
Any politician that uses the phrase " pathway to citizenship" needs to be voted
out of office
If one were to review the crime stats around the mall, they would see that the problem is the metro and the D.C. and P.G. element that travels to Springfield on it. It is not illegals or Hispanics. The metro system ferrying D.C. and P.G. thugs is the problem.

Pizza Dellight went out of business when they busted a big pot ring operating out of there. There was also that D&D store on the bottom floor by the food court, I think it's Lidz or something equally useless now. Time out was the shit. I don't think a town center can save Springfield.

Ha.. I thought the same thing. Potomac Mills always had "that smell" that other malls didn't have.
Springfield Mall went down hill fast - soon after the bright purple lounge areas and carpeted steps were replaced with early 80's schlock. Suzie's Casuals, Units, Jean Nicole, Brooks and dare I mention the long-dead Garfinckel's?

I'm a "pc limousine liberal"? I could've been riding a limousine to work all the time instead of bumping elbows with all the criminals at the Metro? Why didn't anyone tell me this?

Why would anyone take the green line then blue all the way to the Springfield Mall?????? It would take at least 1.5hr 2hr on the weekend to get there while you pass Pentagon City Mall at least 20 minutes earlier and is an infinitely better than the SM. If your crazy logic is true, then once the silver line opens they will all go to Tyson’s instead.
Let break it down another way.
Option A. 1.5-2hr metro ride to Springfield Mall
Option B. 30 min to 1hr ride to Pentagon City
Option C. 30min ride to Gallery Place or DCUSA Target
Option D. Drive to Springfield Mall 15min-20min
