Attention Fairfax Expatriates: Where are you now?

There are a lot of Fairfax expatriates on this site...
Where are you now? Why did you leave? How does it compare to Fairfax?

Palm Beach, Florida. Mayflower packed everything but the snow shovel. Donated all the coats, boots and gloves to Goodwill. Made a small fortune on my overpriced Fairfax Station shitbox colonial. Best day of my life was seeing the Springfield interchange in my rear view mirror as I headed down I-95 South. When I got through Richmond, I knew I was home free. No more car inspections and state taxes. Haven't worn socks since.
Made a good living in the D.C. Metro area, kids received excellent educations at Fairfax County Public Schools, and felt relatively safe. But the damn commute was killing me.
Leaving that hell hole probably added 20 years to my life. Hopefully, your fate will be as good as mine was.

Been in northeast TN for 5 years now and living the dream. I spend almost half the year traveling with my wife all over the states and a trip or two to Europe. My FERS pension & TSP withdrawals are not subject to state income tax here. We do practically all of our shopping in VA (5.3% sales tax in VA vs. 9.5% in TN). With a paid-off house and cars, we basically blow around $100k per year, and the checks will keep on coming 'til we both croak. I'm not even drawing Social Security yet, but my wife is drawing spousal (got really lucky on the timing there, because that loophole just got cut). We both put up with all the DC bullshit for 35 years, so we definitely feel like we earned it. Haven't been back to DC a single time other than to fly out of Dulles for an int'l flight.

Beautiful place and peaceful. Time moves a lot slower here. LOTS of yokels, but practically zero niggers, spics, or ragheads. I'll take it.

These expatriate stories give me hope that one day I, too, can get the hell out of this area. I can't think of a worse area to live. Congested, overpriced housing, everything looks old and sad, and some of the most unfriendly people I have ever had the (dis)pleasure to have been associated with.

Sounds like most folks plan (including mine). Work / live here until retirement, then head off. I guess it's the economy in the DC area that keeps us here. How'd you guys figure out the best area to head off to?

We knew we wanted to be near saltwater and on a golf course, so that meant pretty much on the East Coast. We knew we wanted to be in a place that had warmer winters, so that meant South Carolina on down to Florida. About 10 years before retiring, we started visiting communities that provided these attributes. Once we found the area we liked, we visited that area during the various seasons to get a feel for what year-round living would be like. Then we pulled the trigger.

People ask me if I regret not being close to my kids (they, unfortunately, are financially tied to the D.C. area), and I said, "Hell no." I truly believe we see more of our kids now because they now have a great destination to come to for a visit.

We traveled around to a few places to help us decide. Were looking for a small rural town somewhere where we could have some wooded property and a large garden. But there were way too many redneck morons wherever we'd go. Real white trash shitheads and bible banging trailer park people. Now we're looking for something a little more civilized.

Then stop looking for spots in a trailer park. Would you rather be surrounded by hispanics and blacks?

Currently in Canada, after years overseas. Worked & lived in Malaysia, Australia, Japan, plus Germany + Iraq while a young buck in the Army. Been in talks for a job in Indianapolis, IN, so may be relocating there when the visa expires in Canada.

NoVA will always be home, but it's a great place to be from, not necessarily to be in. The cost of living is too damn high, the traffic is unbelievable, the people are overpaid twats, and it's a cultural deadzone compared to other big US cities. All of them security-cleared, gub'mnt-types have zero personality and are just sucking off the bloated federal/contractor teet until they have enough to do what the poster above did: retire to FL. The dumb, poor contractor types end up in Short Pump or Locust Grove or Annapolis.

To quote my uncle who used to live in Tyson's: "FFX Co. would be a wonderful place if half the people died or moved away."

Has anyone made the jump prior to retirement? The issue is that while cost of living is way cheaper, and traffic doesn't really exist in some of these southern spots, the economy is there (jobs, pay, etc.) is shit. You can buy a castle in Myrtle Beach for less than $300K, but no jobs there. Then there is the family ties to the area as well.

The jobs and pay are the dog collar that keeps most people from making the move to a more enjoyable place before retirement. But for the life of me, I can't fathom why someone would want to stay and live in the Metro area if they were retired. Your retirement dollars are going to go a helluva lot further in a helluva lot more places than DC.
As mentioned previously, we sold our overpriced shitbox Fairfax Station Colonial and were able to buy a piece of property and build a custom built home that was bigger, newer, with a view of the ocean and on a golf course, and still have money left over to decorate and furnish it. And the quality is 10 times better than the quality of our Colonial. We purchased a boat and a membership in a Golf Club as well. Granted, food, gas, clothing are not much different. But depending on where you retire to, your taxes may vary.
My advice: Make as much money as you can, save as much as you can, stay healthy, and do your homework as to places you might want to spend your retirement years. Bottom Line: do yourself a favor and get your ass out of DC as soon as you are able to. Trust me, you won't regret it.

I lived in ffx since Culmore was all white.( nothing racial just demographics). Much of Fairfax was still rather rural. Centreville was still dairy farms and you could own a house and be able to afford the taxes on a blue collar job. I moved to Fauquier 12 years ago and I drive a bit more, but it's what I remember Fairfax was like from the 60s when I was in grade school. My dad worked for the government and we did fine on a modest income.
Now there is too much of many things. Money, people, hostility, taxes, service without knowledge, knowledge without sense.
To little of many things. Civility, land, space, quality service, pride of workmanship, saftey, respect for others and those who built before us. While these things are still with us, our social value systems have changed and these are some of the differences I see. We had less materially, but made up for it in so many other ways. Ahh, affluence and progress. Makes you wonder.

My parents lived in anacostia back in the 40s. It was modist but really quite nice. It may actually be a good investment, because if you remember southwest near the stadium, it was just as bad even 15years ago and is becoming high dollar. South east is heading the same way. As the roads get worse, this in close property will become valuable again.

Chicago! We have very liberal politicians running the city and strict gun control laws, which means it's safe and crime-free.

This is sort of my plan, but when I'm done I don't ever plan on working again. I'm almost 40 and took a sabbatical for six months last year. It was beyond refreshing, renewed my lease on life, and made me realize DC life really is insanity. Goal is to save $1.3mil...$300k to buy a house with cash somewhere in rural America + $1M to draw $30-40k yearly and hopefully forever. The wife is totally on board and we recently crossed the halfway point. I HATE myself for dicking around on investing in my 20s & early 30s because I likely could've already been done. Not having kids was probably the best decision we ever made. If we go bust in 20 years, SS should still be enough to get by. We're simple folks and just don't see the point anymore. Why work and live in this hellhole only to buy a bunch of shit no one really needs?

Try any of the 2nd tier US cities like Nashville or Hershey or Cincinnati or Boulder or Spokane or St. Paul. I liked Annapolis when I was there, too. I hear Omaha, Nebraska is nice. Had a blast when I couchsurf'd in Madison, WI.

I used to pay 1800/mo. for a tiny (but nice) apartment in Alexandria; in Nashville that gets you a decent 3 BR house w/ yard.

They're still real, legit cities, and often have big name companies in them. Plenty of opportunity if you're not a moron. Lifestyle is slower but still pretty good. People are decent and you see less of the hard-left or hard-right nutjobs one sees in cites and rural areas, respectively.

Avoid the popular, hip cities like Austin, Denver, or Portland. Everyone thinks they're cool and all that means is that they fill with hipster twats and drive prices up. Definitely visit them; don't fucking live there.

You'll die alone. Just another old, lonely fucker found dead in his house years after you died because no one gave a shit about you. Fucked away your 20's and 30's, lonely and scrapping by in your 70's and 80's, still working in your 40's and 50's. That's about a decade of living the dream out of 8. Good job.

"still working in your 40's and 50's"

LOL - that includes everyone who works for a living.

If you can't afford to live here after retirement, don't. But those who were at least minimally aware and managed to refinance the original mortgage a time or two or three should check it out carefully. This area can turn out to be surprisingly affordable. In fact, from Arlington to Winchester, it's increasingly becoming an upscale retirement destination. Beautiful countryside, moderate climate, and tons and tons and tons of top-of-the-line amenities. Keep in mind that gas, parking, and insurance costs all plummet once you retire. So do clothing and dry cleaning costs. And of course, the area comes with all your existing family, social, medical, religious and other sorts of networks intact and ready to roll. Not going to be for everyone to stay here of course, but many should take the effort to run the numbers. You might end up being very glad you did.

I'd like some of the drugs you appear to be taking. The traffic alone, any time of the day, will fucking kill you. Good restaurants are really limited, especially for the size of NOVA. Taxes are considerably higher than most places in the country (excluding California, of course). The only really thing the area has going for it as far as a retiree goes, is Dulles airport. And that is only if travel is your thing.
Oh, and the weather absolutely sucks.

In general NoVA is better than 90% of the country, it's quite a shit hole out there in Murica.

I will always own a house up here just because of friends, family, kids, and grand kids. Sounds like a lot of the angry people here probably are single or impotent and have no friends. That makes it a lot easier to move to bumfuck Alabama and lock yourself into your media room and occasionally driving to your favorite restaurant in your SUV, repeat until you finally die.

The good thing is we are a 10 - 14 hours drive away from beautiful towns with great lakes in Québec or also the same distance away from nice beaches in Florida.

We will be downsizing our NoVA home, living in Canada during the summer, Florida during the winter and Fairfax in between.

Made my escape in 99 and never looked back. Relocated to North Idaho getting twice the house for half the money. Outstanding territorial views of snow capped mountains and on occasion elk herds grazing in nearby meadows thrown in at no extra charge. In spring, it's skiing world class powder in the morning and a round of golf in the afternoon. Property taxes little more than half what was paying in NOVA, and being more than the fifth car back at the light is a traffic jam. The area is overwhelmingly white(96%)and sighting that rare black is dinner conversation.

More likely you are all one loser troll who is trying to pretend Florida is some great fucking place. It's not, florida man proves this. Sounds like you're trying to convince yourself that leaving is a great idea. It may well be for many, but the simple facts are that outside of rush hour, the roads in these parts tend to be speedy and efficient. And of course, once you retire, you have no need to drive during rush hour anymore. You sleep in and then go places and do whatever you want and need to do during the day, while everyone else is at work. And while this is a deep and vibrant economy with almost every wort of outlet imaginable, it is also a LOW TAX area in comparison to nearby areas with even remotely comparable amenities and services. And there are actually dozens of very good restaurants in the NoVa area -- I've been to two just this week. Everywhere has an airport, so IAD and DCA are not really such a big deal, but how many places have the sports, exercise, medical, educational, and cultural venues that this area has? How many places can boast of a lush and pleasant landscape plus a moderate 4-season climate where deer eating your newly-planted garden might well be the biggest natural disaster you could expect to be at actual risk of? Again, don't get me wrong, there may be valid reasons to leave. But for many who stop to take a look around, the advantages of simply staying put may become more and more clear in one's mind.

I'd love to get in a deeper discussion concerning this, but right now I don't have the time. I have to walk down to my dock, get in my boat, and go check the crab traps I put out early this morning. I've got a couple of ripe tomatoes that need picking as well. Then back down to the dock and clean the redfish and sea trout I caught after setting out this morning's crab traps. We'll talk more about this later.

After 30 plus years of State Policing here in NOVA, can't wait to GTFO. Too many Yankees and jacked up illegal immigrants have fucked this place up. Before you comment, yes I am a black Trooper. Looking forward to giving this place the middle finger and find a great place to live with good folks who care about this country, work hard, wont live off welfare, along with pro Second Amendment feelings.

Someone understands what getting the hell out of this area means. So many great opportunities abound elsewhere. The problem is that when you are entrapped here, you lose sight of those other opportunities.
For me, when the time comes, I am taking my money and running.

Gee, that sounds really wonderful. For some. But many may have a bit more than cleaning fish in mind for their "golden years". And it is the case that retirement-in-place has a lot more to offer than many may give it credit for. People should do what they want (or need) to do, but packing up and walking away from this area simply because you think you're supposed to isn't likely to work out so well.

"Halfbacks" are people who retire, get out of Dodge, and within a few years move at least halfway back to where they came from. There are large numbers of these, and their mistaken assumptions end up costing them a very pretty penny. Look very carefully before you leap.

Then there are those that have made a very true investment in this area only to be sold out by liberals who support the illegal types, along with damn yankess who really have fucked this county up in ways maybe you do not understand.

You're a broke dumb nigger, it's no wonder you hate one of the wealthiest counties in the free world. State Troopers make as much as a supervisor at Mcdonalds, I'd be pissed too.

Actually, being a State Trooper and being black has worked out well. It is not about race but about ability. It is too bad that most on the color spectrum do not realize that aspect. So in reading your post, go fuck yourself. You seem to be one of those liberals that place skin color above ability.

Just wondering what draws you to that area. Never heard of it before but I looked it up and it appears that about a third of the population lives below the poverty level.

If you're tied here because of a job, you're a pathetic human being and moving won't change a damn thing. Hilarious listening to Fairfax retards talk about how wealthy it is when they're all locked into a worthless job one budget cut away from foreclosure. Most of the people here deserve to be locked in this garbage dump forever.

Planning to move to Australia myself. Not full of fucking hicks masquerading as 'rich people' in decrepit houses full of frilly hand-me-down trash. The only thing the DC area is good for is getting a job that's so stupidly easy, you can spend most of your time building a business overseas. If you have any skill whatsoever (less than 1% of the population here), nobody will notice since everyone is so unbelievably stupid. Hilarious hearing people say this area is affluent. Go overseas sometime and see how you feel about that you pathetic hicks.

Never been to Australia. Or Antarctica. There are some nice places out on the rest of the continents alright, but nothing we felt worth throwing over this place for. As we see it, if you can afford to live here in retirement, there's every reason to go ahead and do exactly that.
