How difficult is it to get a job at the World Bank?

Looks like a nice place to have a career. Is it difficult to land a job there?

Someone was saying that with my language skills, I should look into getting a job there. Maybe as a summer intern. Said the benefits and pay were pretty good. Why so few Americans?

They hire the best and brightest so YMMV.

If only they had a website.

There are plenty of Americans there, it's just a better deal for foreigners because of relocation and education benefits and tax free income. The administrative cadre is infested with Philipinos, a blend of the worst traits of Chinese and Puerto Ricans.

Meh. I've worked with lots there who were nowhere near being the best and brightest. Mostly they seem to tend to hire friends, family, and others with connections. If you're a regular old white American just coming in off of the street, then for the most part you can forget it.

Regular old white Americans just coming in off the street are not likely to be qualified for much of anything at all that members of the World Bank Group busy themselves with.

Slow your roll, tiger.
First, learn to spell.
You'll have a better chance of impregnating more than your sister.

Sure. What regular old white Americans in the DC area could ever do jobs like these?

Yeah, because IT types, research analysts, program managers and policy wonks in every imaginable subject area are a real rarity around here. You really need to go with somebody like the Assistant Director for Sustainable Development's brother-in-law from Burkina Faso to get the deep skills.

My Mom was a high level manager at IBRD. She worked there from 1980 until she retired in 2006. She made millions of dollars working there, had a big, fat pension in the $300k range and killer health care and insurance benefits. I love my Mom and I know she loves me.

I bet I knew your Mom. Worked in the loan department, right? Pretty girl with long, flowing hair and an ass to die for?

It has always been known that if you could latch on to a World Bank or IMF girl, you would be set for life. I have known many to have tried, and many more to have failed.

Word is, back in the day, the World Bank was the place to work. Great pay and great benefits. 10 times what the Feds offered.

Sadly, I got stuck with a wife who worked for USDA. Can you say "sad banana."

If you work at the World Bank, one thing is that you have to like and enjoy curry. The Bank is comprised of 75% Indians, and sooner or later you will be invited to their red, cold chicken parties, with humus and shitty rice. Trust me, I have been there.

My girlfriend invited me to a Christmas Party at the World Bank down on H Street. Wolfenson was the President then. You wouldn't believe the food and booze that was provided at that party. 1st class band as well. You could tell those people in their native garb were feeling no pain. They knew they had the best of all worlds. Good pay, benefits, home leave, and the pleasure of living in my country. I hated it.

I used to go to that party every year, it was nice. The dance floor in the back area was a great place to pick up some foreign sluts, no one ever danced in the main area.

Calling bullshit on that. Only the Bank's President gets 1st class airfare, and it's written into his contract. Others can upgrade like any nigger if they have the miles.

You, sir, are totally wrong, and in fact don't have a fucking clue what you are talking about.
A World Bank employee on Mission is entitled to fly Business or First Class if the time it takes to get to their assignment is longer than 8 hours. And since most of the missions and assignments are in the World's shit holes, it is almost impossible for a traveler to get there in under 8 hours. Therefore, the upgrades.
I had a friend that worked for the Bank back in the 80's. He was coming home via London Heathrow after an assignment in Liberia. His flight from London to Dulles was aboard the Concorde, courtesy of the Bank.

The pensions and benefits would of course look great to the hapless people stuck in jobs that don't offer such things. Of course, many more jobs came with such things not so very long ago. I wonder what happened...

Can't think of many places that offer pension plans as good as the World bank did while still offering a good salary.

It's not all that great actually. 1% of your high-3 per year of service, but with significant penalties prior to age 62. 401-k sort of account does have a generous Bank contribution of 10%, but it is funded with after-tax dollars. Only earnings are tax-deferred. The plan offers a limited and rather unexciting choice of four investment funds. Overall, the World Bank plan would of course dwarf what many private sector unfortunates might qualify for, but the plan is not what it once was, and in comparison to other public sector systems, it's not so great at all.

It's a lot better than that for people who started working there 20 years ago.

LOL! And the Fed system is a lot better for people who started working there before 1983. Simply put, there is nothing so grand about World Bank pensions and benefits unless you are one of those stuck in the US private sector and no longer having any of those.

The World Bank provides money to U.S. citizens to pay their Quarterly Estimated Taxes (yes, I said QET because U.S. citizens working for the Bank are considered to be self employed). At the beginning of each year, the U.S. citizen employed is required to tell the institution what it's tax liability will likely be for the forthcoming year. Number of deductions (kids, mortgage interest), previous year's capital gains, etc. In turn, the Bank gives the employee a week before his quarterly taxes are due, an amount to cover that payment. The U.S. citizen uses those funds to pay his taxes. Allowances are made for adjustments and the employee must provide evidence of the additional funds required.
And when you think about it, it makes sense. Why? Because the dot head working next to you, doing the same job, is bringing home a full paycheck because he's not required to pay taxes to his home country. Now, that wouldn't be fair, would it. The only difference between the U.S. employee and the dot head centers around Social Security. The U.S. citizen pays it; the dot head doesn't. And why should he; he doesn't qualify for the benefits.

Do you like sucking it? Because this is the time when you suck it.

Class of Travel
(a) For all staff (except short-term consultants)

viii. Travel within Zone A: The authorized class of travel for trips taken wholly within the USA and Canada is economy class. When travel originates from a country office, the authorized class of travel for trips wholly within that country is economy class. The authorized class of travel to all other destinations within Zone A (including transoceanic trips) is less than first class (e.g., business class or economy class when business class is not offered). (Annex A lists those countries located in Zone A for travel from Headquarters. Zone A countries for travel originating from other duty stations should be calculated based on flying time from that location).

ix. Travel from Zone A to Zone B and within Zone B: The authorized class of travel is the class above economy. Generally, this means that business class will be authorized; however, when business class is not offered, first class may be authorized.

(b) For short-term consultants (Consultants with appointments of less than 6 months, or with part-time assignments)

x. For travel within the USA and Canada, or trips wholly within the country of origin, the authorized class of travel is economy.

xi. For travel to all other destinations, regardless of Zone, the class of travel is less than first class (e.g., business class or economy class when business class is not offered).

Now, get sucking.

Dude, you basically just confirmed what the guy said. Any travel to some 3rd world shithole is going to be either Business or Class. Economy is pretty much limited to travel in the U.S. And most World Bankers do very little of that type of travel.

You are the one who needs to start puckering up those sucking lips.

Great argument. You must have been on the debate team. /roll eyes

You could fill half of those jobs in one afternoon from lunchtime foot traffic on Pennsylvania Ave.

One thing that is missing from this discussion is what I would call the "Pedigree" of the World Bank employee. Many IBRD employees that I have known come from well established and wealthy families. Sons and daughters of European nobility, members of 3rd World Tribal elites, and those extremely well politically connected. As such, these employees have been extremely well educated at some of the finest financial and economic institutions in the world. I might even go so far as guess that the Americans who work for the Bank are similarly connected in their own right, and are most likely what I like to refer to as "Blue Bloods."
Many of these people could easily work on Wall Street or in other Financial Centers, but choose not to do so because a). they don't need the money (their family is already wealthy as fuck, and b). they are drawn to the mission of the Bank (helping those less fortunate than themselves and making the world a better place for all).
Given the choice and opportunity, I would guess that most World Bank employees are liberal leaning due to the nature of the business that the Bank is in.

I concur with all that you said. I remember when Paul Wolfowitz was selected to head the Bank during the Bush administration. The Bank went into turmoil and downright rejected the fact that a NeoCon could be the figurehead for such an organization. Especially since the previous Bank President, Jim Wolfesohn, was such a beloved leader. Wolfowitz, as we all know, did not last very long.

a. Zone A is not just the US
b. Business class is commonly available
c. Yes, first class is allowed when it's the only class above economy available
d. And you can still upgrade like any nigger.

His argument is based on a story a friend whom we have to assume exists told him about travel back when there was still a Concorde. My argument is based on arranging World Bank travel used to be part of my job. You give me suckee suckee now Joe?

Again, regular old white Americans just coming in off the street are not likely to be qualified for much of anything at all that members of the World Bank Group busy themselves with. Your base babbling, envy, and jealousy won't change that.

The core business of the World Bank is the creation of G-IV visas.

Any chance that if Trump is elected, he's going to withdraw U.S. participation in the World Bank, IMF, United Nations and other Intergovernmental Organizations?

Why the need to advertise them then? And like office-cleaning jobs, your IT positions fall into the area of general support. They would have little if anything to do with such missions as finance and development.

In the DC area many certainly are. It's the office of a large organization with all of the same requirements as any other large organization. You don't need to he a expert in Guyanese sugar trade to do IT, HR, other administrative, or many other types of work that's done there even at programmatic levels.

They do +90% of promotion to manager and above levels internally. As diverse as their workforce is, they have a very heavy emphasis on increasing diversity and within that further targeted hiring to increase geographic representation from specific regions of the world (e.g., Africa). Fact is that a white American applying blindly with no significant connections has little to no chance regardless of their skills.

Organizations routinely list jobs that are destined to be filled internally. For one, to let employees know of openings.

Who said that they had to be mission-directed jobs? Quite the opposite.
