Yeah, yeah...Arlington is not Fairfax County. I was feeling free to post something of interest to NoVA residents...
So, to begin...I fully support everyone involved with this that is employed by the restaurant being fired. I mean shit, the manager doesn't even know enough to not be quoted in the article as saying, "I've told them this repeatedly..."??? That being said, I have this to say...
1) If you're going to go to all the trouble to tell a Chinaman how meals are served in Beijing, and they offer to correct the problem? Your response is never, "Meh...it's not that big of a deal..." If it was a big enough deal for you to mention this to the staff, then allow them to correct it. You described this as an "awkward conversation". That's you, dude. You made it awkward. You alerted the staff to the problem, they proposed a solution to accommodate you...and then you backed away from the whole thing and tried to take the pussy way out.
2) This is America. And in America, our culture is you as the staff are REQUIRED socially and professionally to "meet" your customers where THEY are and not conform them to your business' culture. An example of this is chopsticks. Eating in a Chinese restaurant that provides silverware is a much different and more enjoyable experience for most diners in America than dining in a Chinese restaurant that ONLY provides chopsticks. Most Chinamen, however...don't see it this way and when you do something like point out a problem as this customer did and not allow the staff to address the situation to your satisfaction (which they were willing to do)? Whether you intended it or not...you are causing them to lose face. So, you get what we had here last week. Which is the way he wants it...so...he gets it. Don't want to get comments on your bill? Don't be a dick customer. If there's a problem that you want addressed? Speak to the staff and let them fix it. That's their job.
3) Do not split a check! Absolutely...God damn...never split a check! I take that back...the ONLY time you can split the check is when you go to a Hooter's or some other casual dining, national chain. They've trained their staff on this and their POS is setup to handle this without any trouble. But a full-service, locally owned, non-chain restaurant? No...either get your money together as a group, excuse yourself and go to the ATM, go to the ATM prior to dinner, etc...Better yet, try to keep $100 in 10's, 5's and 1's on your person at all times. Thrown down your cash and let everyone else in your party figure their end out.
4) Plaid? Muffakahs were wearing plaid? Don't wear plaid...unless you live in Maine or Oregon and your work involves terminating trees of their life force...
5) Staff, don't write shit on people's bills that you wouldn't write on your Mother's, Grandmother's or other significant female in your life's bill. Customers are assholes, no question. And you're paid to serve them. Go out back onto the loading dock and fire up a cigarette...or scream and yell...but, you cannot take it out on the customer directly.
