The Fairfax County Fire Chief lashed out on Friday at the owners of Fairfax underground, a website where lewd and vile comments were posted about firefighter Nicole Mittendorf before she took her own life.
Fairfax Fire Chief Richie Bowers said today he has no idea at this point if there is a nexus between Nicole Mittendorf's suicide and the anonymous lewd postings about the 31-year-old that were left on the Fairfax Underground message board but he is pushing for the postings to be removed as he investigates whether anyone in his department wrote them.
The vile postings contain information indicating the writers had some inside knowledge of the workings of the fire department and Nicole Mittendorf. Although Virginia State Police are saying the lewd blog posts had nothing to with her death, Bowers is still lashing out at the people who post vile and vicious comments about people on the website Fairfax Underground.
"The anomaly right here right now is this blog and social media is out of control, people have no common sense and they no sense of responsibility when you have anonymous posts and people can say anything and it's not factual and it's not true it's wrong, it's just wrong, it's terrible,” Chief Bowers expressed.
Bowers says he doesn't know what was in the note left by Nicole Mittendorf before she took her own life in Shenandoah National Park and has no idea at this point if the people who wrote the vile notes about her sex life are firefighters or connected in some way to the fire service. "That's why I'm appealing to the person who hosts this site to take down the lewd comments and certainly consider shutting the site down," Bowers said.

"Now that we have been able to respect and honor Nicole and her family I have all of my internal affairs department on the mission if you will of turning over every leaf, looking under every rock and pebble and pealing back every piece of the onion to find at where we are at and as I indicated when I said aggressive I would any local , state regional or federal resource,” he expressed.
The chief says he has now implemented additional zero tolerance harassment training and will implement a comprehensive suicide education and prevention program throughout the department.

The Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department has initiated an internal administrative investigation into the posts on the local web forum, Fairfax Underground, regarding Firefighter-Paramedic Nicole Mittendorff.
The department says the Virginia State Police remains the lead agency investigating Mittendorff’s death. The investigation is ongoing, however, the missing person case has concluded.
The department says its preliminary investigation has determined that there was no “departmental knowledge” of any bullying or harassment regarding Firefighter-Paramedic Mittendorff prior to her disappearance.
Working in collaboration with the County’s Department of Information and Technology, they say, it has been verified that no county computer was used to access or post on Fairfax Underground.
The web forum is independently maintained and not associated with Fairfax County government.
At this time, the department says it does not know if the posts were authored by any county or Fire and Rescue Department employee, and that investigators are actively continuing with the investigation and using every resource available.
“Fairfax County Fire and Rescue maintains a ‘zero tolerance’ policy in regards to bullying and harassment of any kind,” stated Fire Chief Richard Bowers. “I will hold any county employee or volunteer accountable for these hostile Fairfax Underground postings, which could include termination.”
Mittendorff was discovered dead in Shenandoah National Park on April 21st.
Virginia State Police found Mittendorff--who was reported missing on April 15 after she didn’t appear for work at Station 32 in Fairfax Station--after a six-day long search conducted by local and state authorities as well as volunteers.
A medical examiner determined on April 22 that the 31-year-old woman had died by hanging. Police reported that they found a suicide note by her body, which was discovered more than a mile away from Shenandoah National Park’s Whiteoak Canyon Trail parking lot, where authorities spotted Mittendorff’s car the evening of April 16.
No details have been provided on the contents of the note, and there has been no confirmation that the online postings found on the online community forum Fairfax Underground played a role in Miteendorf’s suicide.
The commenters on the still-active Fairfax Underground thread claim to be Miteendorf’s colleagues, and their posts criticize her body, sex life and death, according to a report by WTOP’s Megan Cloherty.
Moving forward, the Fairfax County Fire and Rescue Department says it will establish a task force with representatives from the IAFF Local 2068 union, Female Firefighters of Fairfax County, and other employee groups to address any issues that may exist within the department related to discrimination, harassment, and bullying in the workplace. This includes implementing additional “zero tolerance” harassment training. The harassment training and education program will be delivered by senior staff, employee group representatives, and Employee Equal Opportunity staff.
Additionally, Bowers says he will implement a comprehensive suicide education and prevention program throughout the department. The program will include extensive education and training in suicide prevention and mental illness. A continued emphasis will remain on behavioral health education and training with guidance from the International Association of Firefighters, International Association of Fire Chiefs. They may not have known about cyber bullying of Nicole, but they certainly knew of the blog and cyber bullying of other women well before the sad issue with Nicole. Nothing was ever done in those early on incidents. FOI or subpoena the emails from back then. Pull the police reports. People knew.

During a press conference Friday afternoon, Fire Chief Richie Bowers urged the site’s owner to take down the posts.
“This social media stuff, and the blog stuff that’s anonymous, is ridiculous. And that’s why I’m appealing to the person who hosts this site to take down the lewd comments and certainly consider shutting the site down,” Bowers said.
The owner of Fairfax Underground, Cary Wiedemann, said he would not take down the posts unless he faced a court order or a direct request from the Mittendorff family.
“Nobody has ever filed an abuse report about those comments,” Wiedemann said, explaining that personal attacks are not allowed on the forum and registered users must make a request to take something down, he said.
Wiedemann said he found Chief Bowers’ request “a deflection of blame.” and that he would not take down the site either. There are similar posts on Facebook pages and “he’s not calling for Facebook to be shutdown,” said Wiedemann.
Six days after she went missing, Mittendorff's body was found at the Shenandoah National Park.
According to police, a suicide note was found in Mittendorff's car and investigators do not suspect any foul play in her death. Virginia State Police have concluded their investigation after the State Medical Examining ruled her cause of death to be suicide by hanging.
Nicole was a firefighter with Fairfax County in Virginia.
The 31-year-old firefighter and paramedic has not contacted her family since Wednesday. On Friday, she was reported missing to Virginia State Police.
State Police won’t reveal what was in the note, but their investigation found no evidence of bullying or harassment of MIttendorff.
Chief Richie Bowers said he has a “zero tolerance” policy against bullying and harassment of any kind. He pledged to leave no stone unturned in trying to find out who made the posts.
If it’s determined a county employee or volunteer is responsible, Bowers said he would hold them accountable, which could include termination from their job.
Chief Bowers said the Fairfax Fire and Rescue Department will establish a task force with female firefighters and other employee groups to address any issues related to discrimination, harassment and bullying in the workforce. He said there are 165 women firefighters, including recruits, among an entire force of about 1,400.
