Careful of Bears in Viennia

VIENNA, VA -- A bear and cub were spotted by a resident Sunday night in the Vienna area, Fairfax County Police said Monday.

The black bear and cub were spotted at about 7 p.m. Sunday by a resident in the 1500 block of Windstone Drive in the Vienna (see map below) area of Fairfax County. This location is near Difficult Run Stream Valley Park and Wolftrap Stream Valley Park, police noted.

Police note that spring, which officially arrived Sunday, is the time when black bears and cubs emerge from their winter dens, typically between mid-March to early May in Virginia.

The bears that were seen Sunday posed no problems or issues, but did stay on the property in the neighborhood of single family homes and woods for about an hour, according to police. Bears typically avoid humans, but may wander into residential areas in their search for food.
