The Board of Zoning Appeals approved a new 435,000 square-foot sports, fitness and wellness complex in Springfield on Wednesday called the St. James Sport and Wellness Center. Our land use planners believe this facility will be the largest on the East Coast, next to Chelsea Piers in Connecticut.

Some of the features of the center include:

A multi-purpose turf field for full-length competitive soccer, lacrosse, football, field hockey and softball.
Two NHL regulation-sized ice rinks for hockey, figure skating, open skating and curling.
Aquatics center.
Basketball and volleyball center.
Baseball and softball center.
Golf and racquet center.
Gymnastics and dance center.
Laser tag, rock climbing walls, and party rooms in a family entertainment center.
Health and wellness center that will include orthopedic medicine, pre- and post-operative rehabilitation and pediatric care.
Health club with cardio and strength training equipment and yoga, spinning and Pilates studios.

Is this to be a county-owned facility?

Private, for profit baby...

"The center will be membership based, but non-members will be able to sign up for programs."

At least the bus stop gets a canopy. Not that anyone who uses the bus will ever step foot in there.

What's the St. James connection?

It would be nice if tax dollars actually went to something this "grand" and useful.

How is it that a monopolistic utility is in the position to profit from a land deal? Will the profits result in a rate decrease?

Yes, they will.
The Backlick Rd. VRE station is about 1500 ft away.
Commuters can workout/play and use the train and/or bus to get home/work.

need to see a better map of where this thing is going to be. Springfield is a shithole due to all the on and off ramps to 95 etc along Franconia Rd. I have still yet to see a nice part of Springfield. I am gathering this is the part of Springfield closer to Alexandria?
