reston town center parking

Reston Town Center will start charging for parking....I won't go there anymore. All the stores I would go to there are in Fair Oaks Mall where parking is free. They will find themselves with closed shops because what store is going to be able to stay with no customers?

I agree.

I'm not pay to park at Town Centers. There are plenty of other new Town Centers popping up that don't charge for parking.

After years of talking about it, Reston Town Center will soon be going to a paid parking garage system.

Later this year — most likely by August — RTC garages will start using an app-based system called Park RTC, says RTC spokeswoman Marion Myers.

Myers says there is already evidence that people are parking at Town Center and taking shuttles to Dulles International Airport or Whiele-Reston East’s Metro station and leaving cars for hours or even overnight.

With a Reston Town Center Metro station coming in 2020, there needs to be a new system in place, she said.

“We are looking for some solutions to protect parking for office [employees] and store customers,” said Myers.

They should at least offer a parking stamp for folks eating and shopping but they just want to up their revenue stream. The current excuse is that metro riders are parking for free all day. Tysons got past that by keeping the barriers down until 9:30.

Further I heard they are adding a food tax. That seems unlikely but I could be wrong.

RTC does not have taxing authority. They do have the authority (and obligation) to protect the interests of their stores and shoppers by keeping snake-in-the-grass commuters from clogging up the parking lots.

I heard workers at the RTC have to pay to park .... That is going to be an issue for low paid service workers.

The parking garages open at 10am... I doubt there is a commuter problem. Even if there were, it would be easy to police.

Fair Oaks Mall is a nicer experience anyway. RTC is feels crowded/cramped.

If they start charging for parking that restaurant and shop business will drop like rocks in water.

Sucks for the businesses there.

Just charge for parking over 7 hours.

I won't go there anymore. Not so much the money, but the pain in the butt factor. Time to find a new hair stylist.

I never liked Reston. If I never went there again, I’d never miss it. It sucks to be in Reston.

Can't imagine this helping business, there are great restaurants and shops close by with free parking. Nothing in the RTC is unique.

Tysons has 11,000 parking spots. RTC has less than 850. That's 13 times the capacity so the comparison is useless. The RTC garage will be in direct proximity to the metro station whereas the Tysons garage is on the opposite side of 123. Apples to Oranges.

Reston residents can get more information about the planned paid parking system at Reston Town Center at a meeting Thursday at the Hyatt Regency Reston.

While the meeting is aimed at town center homeowners, residents and merchants, members of the public can also attend.
This is a venue change — the meeting was previously scheduled to be at The Avant but has been moved to accommodate more people. The meeting will run from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m.

“The parking initiative also includes a parking guidance system that supports an improved customer parking experience by having:

License plate recognition to determine vehicle occupancy within each space

LED-based space indicators that change color to reflect the status of the parking space

Electronic display boards to indicate the direction and quantity of available parking spaces

Online space counts in real-time and on site signage which is updated as space availability changes.

Additional pedestrian signage to guide customers to shopping and dining options
Parking will cost $2 an hour. Store and office employees will have to pay for parking as well, but monthly passes (up to $70 for office workers; $50 for retail workers) are being offered. Many stores also say they will offer validation, but that exact plan has not yet been worked out.

Parking will still be free on weekends, holidays and during major community events such as the holiday parade, Oktoberfest Reston, the free Blue Oyster Cult concert in January, or the Northern Virginia Fine Arts Festival. There will also be designated free parking for quick stops at stores such as FedEx, CVS and the dry cleaners.

RTC officials say the paid parking is necessary to cut down on commuter parking, whic

Why do office workers get more of a parking subsidy than retail workers? They should get free parking passes. RTC is a dump, but this really shows what assholes the people who run it are.

My kid worked at the move theater last summer for 8.00 bucks an hour I told him not to go back this year not worth it ... The retail tenants must be mad. They probably pay really elevated rents due to the location and crowds. No one getting paid 8.00 is going to want to work there

Maybe it would be free for workers if they didn't put in an expensive parking space detector system.

Just do validation for RTC workers/shoppers and charge $5/hr for non-RTC users.

The tenants probably have validation stickers for parking tickets. We have monthly stickers and daily stamps.

Your numbers are inaccurate. Reston Town Center has almost 7,000 free parking spots in its garages. See

(The surface lot is now a construction site).
