Question for the folks who have or tried FIOS
Posted by: pucelle ()
Date: August 17, 2006 07:55AM

I decided to be a lemming and signed up get the 15/2 {I decided the 30/5 isn't something I'd use even if its only $10 more} They won't be by to do the home installation part for a couple of weeks. Here are my questions/concers based on what I've been reading on the net:

Does Skype/Vonage or any other kind of VoIP work that's not Verizon based work?
Do they pull out the copper line or only disconnect it?
Have you had any problems with things being blocked aisde from port 80?
Have you had any VPN connection problems?
Anyone have any problems with their phone, fax, etc not working with the new line?
Where did they install the OTN box, next to the copper one?

I can't answer all of your questions, but I'll get things started:

I have not tried any skype/vonage thing. I do know that your phone line does go out over the fiber, so I guess that means it's VoIP already.

They cut the copper at the base of the foundation.

According to Verizon, they block port 25 as well.

the ONT was installed on the outside of the house, right near where the phone lines were originally.

FYI: port 25 is used for sending email
so does cox. they do however have a SMTP server that accepts port 25 that you can use to send your email. this is done in order to prevent spam. you may say "im not a spammer!" but that doesnt mean your arent another idiot running windows that has become an infected zombie that is part of a spammer's botnet. personally, i just set up port 8000 to work on my email server to work as a replicate of the SMTP port.

Supposedly Verizon cuts the copper line and once you get FIOS you can never go back..but what if you sell your house? Does that still apply to the next owner, who didn't sign a contract with Verizon?

I have wondered about that since I got FiOS, as it may affect my ability to sell my house in the future. I hope that FiOS either becomes ubiquitous, or they have an answer for that question soon.

The truth of the matter is this, the "copper line" that is "cut" when FIOS is installed, is your drop wire - either aerial or buried. That wire could be thought of as expendable, as it does not have an effect on whether or not you could ever go back to "traditional" services from Verizon.

If you cancelled your FIOS service when you move and the new people wanted traditional services, a new service wire would have to be either hung, or trenched in - not a big deal in the grand picture.

Fios is an amazing service :-)

Does Skype/Vonage or any other kind of VoIP work that's not Verizon based work?
- I have Lingo, and yes, they work fine. Verizon has no stated plans to force people to use their VoIP service, but I have read that they are watching some lawsuit with a cable company that is blocking traffic unless you pay some "quality of service fee" very closely.

Do they pull out the copper line or only disconnect it?
- They install another wall box on or in your house that converts the fiber into Ethernet, coax and POTS lines. I believe they will hook it up to your residential lines if you spring for their phone service. They cut the old copper lines at the house and reportedly cut them at your neighborhood’s telco box when they install it.

Have you had any problems with things being blocked aside from port 80?
- No problems at all.

Have you had any VPN connection problems?
- Outgoing, none. Incoming, no idea.. I've never tried.

Anyone have any problems with their phone, fax, etc not working with the new line?
- Only issue I had was with my DirectTV Tivo. They really don't like to work over VoIP lines (something about a digital signal being converted to an analog signal and re-digitizing it to send via IP traffic....), but you can get around it by lowering the TIVO's modem speed in the setup options.

Where did they install the OTN box, next to the copper one?
-The bastards put it in my basement right next to the fuse box. There is also a battery backup box that they install, and a oversized power brick to supply it with.

I have had FIOS for over a year now... I run Vonage as well. I have had NO problems.

They will cut the copper at your NID and extend the fibre connection from the street to your NID.

They will also install a UPS for VOICE traffic only.

I have been extremely happy with the FIOS service. I have not had ANY outages and the Internet service is great. Other than having 80 and 25 blocked it has a been a trouble free service.

They install a UPS for the voice portion? Is it some monster ups or is it like a store-bought APC type?

They probably install a UPS designed specifically for the equipment. That's what you get when you get phone service from the cable company.

It's probably capable of backing the equipment up for a couple hours at least.

Just because it's fiber, doesn't mean it's IP

As for the UPS - it's just a 12v battery inside the box. We have a bunch at work, I'll try to snap a few pictures.

& port 80 - chances are, they block incoming access to port 80, but obviously not outgoing access.

FIOS rocks!!! I had Cox prior to getting FIOS installed, and FIOS is MUCH faster. I'm just waiting for my DirecTV contract to expire so I can get FIOS TV service.

Well, where to start.

1) the battery backup works on both the phone AND the data based on two different technicians at two different installs that stated this. Also stated it would only work 30 mins to a hour tops...

2) The TV portion is NOTHING like suck ass COX communications.
a. COX alleged HDTV is NOT HDTV it is 720P content like DirecTV's alleged HD content.
b. FiOS is TRUE 1080i HD broadcast content.
c. I only had HBO, Showtime, and HD service with COX and my monthly bill was 120 a
month. Fios has at least 20 more movie channels than COX even offers. I now have ALL pay channels available and pay 30 bucks LESS a month. HD service is INCLUDED with the 1st tier above basic service and even if you do not have a HD TV you can get a HD box and use it with a standard definition TV. Can't do that with COX. Yes there are some channels that are not broadcast in standard definition.

The Internet service is unreal. My first location I had the 15/2 service. I moved and now have the 30/5 service for 55 bucks a month not 130 bucks as well. Pretty wild downloading 2+gigs in 15 mins!

The phone and data lines ARE seperate. It is NOT a IP based phone system by what I was told. You can tell when your on a IP phone versus a land line phone, at least I can.

If you configure your VOIP adapter to use G.711a or G.711u codecs, you will NOT be able to tell the difference between it and a landline phone. These codecs use more bandwidth and are the same codecs used internally by the phone companies.

I've got a UPS from APC on my important stuff, and it cost me 30 dollars and I get like 20 mins of time. Less if the comp is working harder. So if my power goes out, I can get on the internet a few times to find out the weather, etc

And i get cox cable and internet. for 52 bucks a month, i get expanded basic tv and internet with quoted speed of up to 20 mega BITS/sec. I usually get about 5, see this site to do a free speed test: http://www.dslreports.com/speedtest.

I have a 400 watt inverter, a car parked in the garage, and an extension cord. If the power goes out, I can run the computer for at least an hour, probably more, before I have to worry about draining the car battery too much.

If you have a full tank of gas you can run it even longer.

there are multiple standards for HDTV.

Quote

the format 720p60 is 1280 × 720 pixels, progressive encoding with 60 frames per second

> b. FiOS is TRUE 1080i HD broadcast content.

Quote

The format 1080i50 is 1920 × 1080 pixels, interlaced encoding with 50 fields (25 frames) per second.

with 1080 you can see the streaking effect from the low refreshing also being interlaced, especially when you are watching sports.

here is info about HDTV. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/HDTV

WRONG!

When they put in fiber, they want to replace the copper for your phone lines, too. They take all the residential phone lines (unless you have a good objection or it doesn't work) and replace them with connections through the ONT.

with my 1080i tv, which is "just" 42 inches, the streaking (aliasing) is not noticeable under the correct screen settings for the picture...it's more and more noticeable as the screen gets larger, the same tv in a 50 inch model showed a lot more aliasing. I have to admit I do not watch much sports outside regular season nfl, so I have not had to confront that yet.

and gravis is right... hdtv has become a wildcard technology. You can put that term on a few resolutions...

1080p will be sweet

Ya know Verizon dug my neigborhood way the f*ck up and then decided they weren't going to put fios in the other half b/c they couldn't get an easement and the homeowners would have to decide if they wanted it and pay for it to be put thru.

As if I didn't know the above, boy you make some absurd assumptions. I have a 51" Sony Grand Wega CRT Projection no screen tearing or streaking effects,,,You can spout all you want when YOU even HAVE HDTV and FiOS and then two seperate TV's. One 720P and one 1080i both the same technology wise no DLP against say a plasma. Then you come and talk.

I have Vonage and it beats paying $50-$60 a month compared to the $16 I pay now. Depending on your high speed connection, you hear static when you're downloading a huge file (song, video, etc) and are on the phone at the same time. If you're not downloading the latest porn flick of over 200 MB then you're golden. It works just dandy.
