Move School Days to Summer for FCPS
Posted by: Concerned Parent. ()

Move schools day to Summer and not having FCPS school in January and February makes complete sense.

Reason
1) It gets cold in Jan-Feb, too cold for schools, kids and teachers.
2) The buses don't work well in weather under 40 degrees.
3) It snows in Jan-Feb and kids are not safe in snow. Very dangerous.

The present system works fine. On days in any month when having schools open would be difficult or dangerous, the schools are closed. If necessary to comply with state mandates, such days are made up in June. There is no problem.

This is affecting those workers who are paid hourly and have to take off work with no sick/personal leave to stay home and watch their kids.

Also affects those who pay for before/after care and need to pay that $150/week whether or not lil Johnny was in their care or not. Most sitters these days write it into the contract, they get paid regardless. The parents themselves do NOT if their job doesn't offer any type of PTO. It's a problem.

So now, instead of 40 hours this week they are lucky to get 16 (tomorrow and friday). The same bills are due every month, regardless of the amount of the paycheck.

Just another viewpoint.

There's this old saying about how you made your bed? The event of snow days during the winter is as foreseeable as the need to change the oil in your car periodically and replace the tires. Plan ahead. Be ready. It's not that big a deal.

I agree. We know it's going to snow in January and February. Why have schools in those months? We can't control snow.

Moving school to Summer months give 100% assurance that school days will happen. Why do we getting in this mess every year.

It's time to the problem!

There isn't a problem at all, except in the minds of the most feeble among us. Manage your budget better. Get a better or a second job. Apply for welfare if things are all that awful for you. This is all stuff that is on YOUR PLATE. Put on your big-boy undies and deal with it.

Not a problem? How about for all the parents that have to stay home from work to watch their kids? Miss pay and burn vacations\sick days?

I can assure you many parents don't have "snow days" at their work.

You're offering this sage advice to the administration of FCPS, right?

The event of SNOWY days during the winter is foreseeable. Whether or not they need to be "snow days" is based directly on FCPS's own level of preparedness and planning.

Having children is a choice. School is not daycare
