My girls, who still live in the D.C. area, both called today.

Both asking about retirement advice and what process we went through to select our Southern U.S. retirement location. They also asked whether I missed the snow and cold. Hahahahaha.
I just laughed, reminding them both that the crappy weather (both Summer and Winter) is the price you pay for having a decent job in the D.C. area.
I told them to keep their noses to the grind wheel, work hard, stay healthy, and they, too, one day will be able to get their asses out of that hellhole of an area.
BTW, shot an 82 today. About what I usually shoot.

Where in the D.C. area did you live, where did your girls go to school and what did you do while in the area?

We lived in Fairfax Station. My girls of course went to Robinson. Both my wife and I worked at and retired from the World Bank.

Jesus Christ, both you and your wife retired with World Bank pensions? I imagine you're living quite large. Fucking insane.

For someone who believes they're living in paradise, you sure do spend a lot of time on this board. If life is truly what you claim it is where you live, why keep coming back here and posting?

Me? I'm only on here because I'm not out driving because of the storm.

I'm sure the girls will more than oblige to your offer since they won't have to do the hard work that daddy has recommended for them to build up their savings and pension plans.

Not all that great actually. 1% of your high-3 per year of service, but with significant penalties prior to age 62. 401-k sort of account does have a generous Bank contribution of 10%, but it is funded with after-tax dollars. Only earnings are tax-deferred. The plan offers a limited and rather unexciting choice of four investment funds. Overall, the World Bank plan would of course dwarf what many private sector unfortunates might qualify for, but the plan is not what it once was, and in comparison to other public sector systems, it's not so great at all.

Worried about "world government" again, eh? Despite your bumpkin fears and trepidation, the World Bank Group is going nowhere.

I'm imagining Petey and his wife retired from the World Bank under the previous Defined Pension (Guaranteed for Fucking Life) Retirement plan which was 2nd to none. They are probably receiving close to 80% of what their salaries were before their retirement. I'm guessing that they probably pull in over $300,000 a year in retirement benefits. Their health insurance coverage is probably quite nice as well.

Sure did. But those of us who were hired into the old system were "Grandfathered."

No, you weren't. You could keep the credits you'd earned as of 1998. Otherwise, it was turn out the lights, the party's over.

Well, everyone can dream. It doesn't cost anything, after all.

+1

My wife and I will never have to touch any of our retirement accounts, mandatory withdrawals aside. I get about 70% of what my salary was. My wife who worked for the government only gets about 30%.

With that said, we prefer a little more exotic destinations, not Florida.

We spend only half our year in Florida. We own a 2nd home in Sarlat, France and spend our summers there, among other exotic locations. Florida is a good place to dwell during the winter months.

I have dated a sweet girl off and on since the 60's. She was actually my first true love and we met up again a few years ago. She is now a retired world bank employee and it was so tempting to tap that stuff again. She is still a fabulous girl and we had some fun but I couldn't get past the fact she made more money than me sitting on her butt as I worked my fingers to the bone.

Some day, when I have more time, I'll describe in detail how my employer, The Word Bank for Reconstruction and Development, paid my State and Federal taxes as well. Yes, you heard that right. I didn't pay State and Fed taxes.
But, we'll save that discussion for a later time and date. Right now, I'm donning my Columbia fishing shorts and Reefs flip flops and taking my dogs for a walk down along the beach.

Comparable to a fed with about 37 years of service.

She was covered under FERS and had only about 27 years of service. She will also receive an SS pension based on those years and earnings.

Most people do. Florida is the promised land only in the eyes and minds of people who have never lived there.

IBRD is one of five institutions that make up the World Bank Group. The others are IDA, IFC, MIGA, and the International Centre for Settlement of Investment Disputes.
