The 2016-17 budget process began last summer, and it isn't Garza who does the actual work. Staff version goes to Garza, then to the school board, then to the county board. Passage of state and county budgets will tell the school board how much they will actually have to work with next year. From that point, an actual school budget will come into being. The process won't be completed until sometime in May.

FCPS FY 2017 Budget Calendar*
January 7, 2016 - Superintendent releases the 'advertised' FY 2017 Proposed Budget (meaning the inflated request budget)
January 25 - School Board holds public hearings on budget (January 26 if needed)
January 28 - School Board conducts budget work session
February 4 - School Board adopts FY 2017 Advertised Budget (inflated request)
February 16 - Fairfax County Executive Ed Long releases FY 2017 Advertised Budget Plan for Fairfax County plus the FCPS request combined.
March 1 - County Board of Supervisors (BOS) advertises tax rate. After it is advertised, the final tax rate can be the same or lower, but not higher. FCPS wants a major increase in the County's tax rate to fund their budget request.
April 5 - School Board presents 'revised' budget to County BOS
April 5-7 - County BOS holds public hearings on budget
April 19 - County BOS FY 2017 Budget mark-up - determine budget package and final tax rate
April 26 - County BOS approves the FY 2017 Adopted County Budget, tax rate resolution, and final approved County transfer amount to schools
May 2 - School Board conducts budget work session
May 12 - School Board FY 2017 Approved Budget presented for new business
May 17 - School Board holds public hearings on budget (May 18 if needed)
May 19 - School Board conducts budget work session
May 26 - School Board adopts FY 2017 Approved Budget
July 1 - FY 2017 school year with new budget begins
