No Drone Flying Within 30 Miles of DC
Posted by: Crazyness!!!! ()

WASHINGTON (WUSA9) – Area drone hobbyists are disturbed about recent emails announcing the extension of FAA's "no drone zone" deeper into Virginia and Maryland in a 30 mile radius beyond the District.

"So, anyone who flies drones or RC airplanes or anything within 30 miles of DC is now officially grounded," said hobbyist Cyrus Phillips.. "That came out on Christmas Day."

He said the notice effectively closes the Capital Area Soaring Association and all other hobbyist parks within 30-miles.

Drone violations and arrests have led to public awareness of the ban in D.C., but this ban goes deeper than ever before and is the same as the no flying zone restricting heavy, commercial aircraft.

A search of the FAA's website showed conflicting language from "anywhere in" the district on one page, to banning drones within a 15-mile radius of the District in another, but deep within the FAA site is a document mentioning the 30-mile ban.

It took a day of e-mails and phone calls for WUSA9 to confirm the ban with FAA officials.

"It is important for you to tell your viewers that they cannot fly in the 30 mile radius," said an FAA official on background. "The FAA will continue to do outreach to educate the public."

The FAA said an official notified clubs to let them know police will be enforcing the ban.

Does this include model airplanes like hobbists use in model airplanes parks?
Is a model airplane consider to be a type of drone/

Democrats at work.

Obama and Clinton and Kerry and Pelosi and Reid want to control everything down to the number of toilet paper tissues you use.

That's what's wrong with the modern Democrat party.

What was strong under Kennedy, is now a women-run party who think that America sucks, and that we need to submit to the UN.

So, no, I will vote Republican next year, and now for some limp-wristed faggot, whether it's Clinton or Biden.

You know the reason. They don't want drones within a few miles of any spooky agency buildings. But if they told where you couldn't fly they would be telling you where the high profile targets are.

Yeah, it was Obama who banned the drones. I just read that Trump said if he is elected he will lift the ban and even let you fly drones on the White House lawn while he's busy down at the boarder supervising the Great Wall construction.

The FAA is preemptively banning drones in DC airspace because if they're allowed to proliferate it's just a matter of time before someone accidentally causes an aircraft strike incident in the very crowded airspace in this region.

The other, unspoken reason for the ban is that with drones, anyone with a couple thousand bucks, a little technical know-how and a grudge now has themselves a perfect delivery system for an IED. A small drone with a kilo or so of go-boom attached could easily take out just about any civilian aircraft.

As with "gun control", how is a drone ban going to stop the guy with the grudge? Also, if this is an FAA rule, what local cops are going to be running around enforcing this? The same local cops that currently enforce immigration laws?

Beats me - but that's not really the point. The primary threat appears to be some yahoo who inadvertently flys his toy into an aircraft, thus potentially killing hundreds of people. This is the same kind of asshole who thinks that his personal arsenal will protect him from 'the gubmint'. Fortunately, the 2nd amendment (whose meaning has been completely distorted by the antideluvian troglodytes on the Supreme Court and the NRA) does not cover drones. Deal with it.

Drone manufacturers will be required to program the firmware so that it will refuse to lift off if the GPS determines that is in a drone-prohibited area.

Enforcement will be by local cops, but also by feds. Technologically speaking, I don't know how that will really work. Once they down a drone, they might be able to figure out who owned it.

It is hard to see how any of these things will stop any terrorists, but it could lessen the amount of random John Q. Public aerial adventures.

Technically? Illegal, along with kites. I am not shitting you. Both would be classified as "tethered aerostats," which is something the FAA believes it has control over, and which is called out specifically in the NOTAM as not allowed.

drones do need to be regulated. From privacy to safety there really are concerns about having any douche operating a 2-3 lb piece of plastic a couple hundred feet in the air over populated areas. Its not like we let folks operate radio controlled cars all over the roads, sidewalks and crowded parks right.

What is it the drone operators are fighting for anyway? You like flying your drone, great just put it in the car and go to some field somewhere away from people and property. By the way if your drone lands in my property or my tree - its mine.

What is it the gun owners are fighting for anyway? You like shooting your guns, great just leave them locked up at a shooting range and get in your car and go there and shoot them somewhere away from people and property. By the way if you point a gun at me I will take it away from you and stuff it up your ass and pull the trigger until it goes click.

"You can be arrested for flying a toy in your yard yet we allow tens of thousand to enter through our borders illegally. The country just officially went down the
shitter."

YOU WANT TO KNOW WHY?

Illegal border crossers have no money. So there is no way to make them "illegal" if you cannot fine them and extract money from them, and you have to give money to them forever to let them stay or give money to them to deport them back over and over again..

Drone owners, on the other hand, have lets of extra funds available, or they would not be playing with pricey toys like drones.

What better way to collect a really nice income (much like the DC meter maids who drop out of trees the second that each meter expires) than towait until Christmas day, then make drones illegal, when you know that practically everyone within 30 miles of dc will give one or get one to play with on Christmas?

FFX County just got permission from the FAA (begged to their federal overlords) to fly RC planes at Poplar park. You have to be a member of the private flying club and join AMA in order to fly unsupervised. On top of that you still have to be a registered "drone pilot" with the FAA. FFX county parks department has prohibited flying RC vehicles and even RC boats at all county parks with the exception of Poplar park for planes. This is sickening.

It sucks i got a drone on Christmas and i cant even fly it without driving to shanondoah. Pretty bullshit if you ask me, I understand the issues with hitting planes and federal buildings, but why the fuck can I not fly it around my home which is in a remote as fuck area with almost 20 acres. What I also dont get is if my small drones under half a pound apply to this regulation. Normally drones under half a pound are considered toys and thus exempt but this is a special "temporary" ban idk what applies and what doesnt. I understand a ton of federal people are parinoid about getting taken out by a drone or something but the whole thing leaves a bad taste in my mouth. Places like Manassas, Clifton, Great Falls, and all of Loudon are so remote that it would be completely appropriate to fly them as long as you dont fly above 100 feet. I just want to race my drone.

I thought the new FAA 30-mile no-fly zone was recently reduced back to 15-miles last couple weeks (see other thread on this).

So it should be possible to fly subject to whatever other rules there are.

They just take away little bits of freedom here and there, day by day. Maybe it's dronez and no one cares, tomorrow it's BAC down to .05, asset forfeiture, restrictions on "hate speech", and so on. Goodbye America.

FAA was more than willing to sit back and see how consumers where (un)able to regulate drone use themselves. For YEARS drone usage was unregulated and people started to (naturally) take advantage. Social media "one-upping" has resulted in increasing risk and danger to flight operations among others. You obviously can't have a $200 toy risking a multi-million dollar aircraft, crew, cargo, and potentially passengers. FAA has to do *something* and this is it.

Fast-forward a bit and the FAA held several 60-day windows[1] for public comment on proposed and pending regulation on the matter which, unsurprisingly, resulted in very little feedback. Significantly less feedback than the current bitching and moaning "after the fact" armchair quarterbacking that our area is so good at.

So either drone users don't have skin in the game or simply don't care enough to provide input into the inevitable regulation process. In both cases you can't possibly complain now. You made your bed, now get nice and comfy and lay in it.
