Does the DMV no longer send a letter for registration renewals?

My vehicle registration expires December 2015 but I haven't received a letter from the DMV. I tried to renew on the DMV website but it asks for emissions testing info that I don't have. In the past, I take the letter that the DMV mails to the testing station, hand it them, and get my car tested. Do they not send this letter anymore?

Just wait until early Dec to get the Emission Inspection performed. You do not need the registration letter to get an Emission Inspection.

Once the Emission Inspection is performed, the info is sent to DMV and within 24 hours you should be able to register the car online. DMV usually sends the stickers quickly and you should get them in about 1 week after registering online.

Its not that hard.

If you live in Fairfax, did you pay your personal property taxes by Oct 10th this year?? Fairfax sends a letter usually in the beginning of Sept for personal property taxes.

Why would DC/MD/VA send you a letter?

I believe testing stations can report the emissions inspection results using the VIN. In the past when I forgot to bring my registration renewal to the inspection that is what they did. To avoid an unnecessary trip you might want to call your inspection station.

The last time I forgot to bring the letter (the one with the barcode on it) the inspector got angry and told me to go home and get it. Strange.

& the last time I took the letter with me, I was told they didn't need it.

It could be the result of misdirected mail (sent to the wrong address).

I got an email not a letter, which is better.
