Don’t take it personal. They are just texting and using you to guide them. If you change lanes, they will be lost, swerve as if they are drunk and they may come to a complete stop until they get their text sent. Then, you will see them racing past you in an all-fired hurry and they usually appear to be annoyed and inpatient with the amount of traffic, until they receive their next text, that is. Then they attach themselves to the car in front of them and the cycle continues. Nothing personal. The driver is usually a young adult in a car. Not to be mistaken for the mothers in large SUVs or minivans texting as they drive.

The only people who are angry are the tailgaters. Video evidence proves it, shamu. I had a good time going from the 14th Street Bridge to Spout Run yesterday on the GW Parkway. I did 40 mph in the left lane the whole way. I laughed at every micropenis driver that had to pass me on the right while flicking me off or shaking their fist at me. The best part is when we got to Spout Run and the traffic got backed up. As I exited, I politely waved at each and every one of those douches. Their pissed off expressions were a wonderful way to start the weekend!

Precisely. There are basically four types of left lane blockers:

1) People who just don't know any better. This is the most common scenario, particularly when the driver is a minority or from Maryland. (And if it's a minority from Maryland, you can pretty much fuhgeddaboudit. :-) It's just plain cluelessness rather than malice.

2) People who are distracted. It's quite common for someone to be in the left lane when an urgent text message or phone call comes in. Their focus shifts to the phone, and they slow down significantly - continuing to bumble along until their focus returns to the road (which could be a significant period of time later).

3) People who think the "drive right, pass left" rule only exists on certain roads, and that they get to pick which ones. The OP is an example of this. These buffoons will go the speed limit in the left lane on a road like route 50 because they have a left turn coming up in 5 miles. 4) People who do it intentionally because they're angry at the world. This is actually very rare - almost unheard of. Normally when you see someone doing it intentionally, they're targeting a particular driver behind them because he/she did something they didn't like. But what #4 refers to isn't this kind of transient targeting. What we're talking about here is someone doing it on a regular basis, to annoy anyone and everyone. Beginner’s First Driving Lesson:
Having just graduated from high school, I was 18, driving on the GW Parkway from N Arlington to a new job in Alexandria. It was 1980. I don't remember any other cars on the road, just the one in front of me who moved out of the right lane to block me from passing him. "Hmm. Maybe he didn't see me." I thought. I moved back into the right lane and he moves in front of me again. I didn't know what to think. ”Is it the speeding or the passing that offends him?" I thought as I considered my next move. I must have kept trying because all the way to Old Town, we traveled like that - he blocking me in the left lane and then the right; sometimes hovering in the middle to get a faster jump on me. It seemed like the strangest thing. Nothing like that has ever happened to me since.

Next, I'll share my second lesson which took place in DC with a taxi driver.

Note: Certainly, there must have been traffic on the road but it wasn’t enough for me to notice. It seemed as if it was just me and him. We were traveling at speed (his choice) so I guess it’s possible there was no one behind me. Hard to imagine though. Today at 8am it is probably one big parking lot.

Well, that thought never occurred to me. In the scenario I imagine, she is wise and unafraid. That alone might turn you off.

Second Driving Lesson

On SE Freeway in the lane to exit onto S. Capital Street toward Suitland Bridge. Year, 1980. Age, 18. The exit ramp was bumper-to-bumper and backed-up onto the highway. We were crawling along and a taxi driver nosed-in in front of me. I pulled up to block him and likely started chewing on a few choice words. He squeezed in a little further. It became a game of Chicken and he won because he didn’t give a shit what happened to his car. The lesson learned: Get a bigger vehicle and drive like you don’t give a shit. People will move.

I do understand that speeding is breaking the law, but the highways are actually designed to handle 1970's car suspensions and brakes at 75MPH.

I really thing one of the problems are people that are allowed to get a liscense later in life when they did not have one in their country of origin, and then try to drive here. I don't think they know to not drive in the left lane.

I think if everyone would give driving their undivided attention, there would be few incidents of road rage.

I missed two lights when I was out this afternoon driving locally. Two lights at 5-10 extra minutes a pop. Two lights, had the drivers ahead of me been paying attention, we all would have gotten through. Sit behind someone who is texting instead of going through green lights, at your expense and tell me you’re not going to be pissed.

There used to be a lot of emphasis impressing courtesy driving by both the government, the DOT, DMV, and the media.
Constant emphasis.
Now, they just put up more sign and idiot light intersections.
Everyone thinks at all times thinks they have the 'right of way'. That it is all right to endanger even someone in front of them with their aggressive tailgaiting. And in just about every state, if you are speeding at any time, you do lose any 'right of way' rules that might apply, anywhere.
Yet, with most of the cops being just as corrupt minded as the asshole drivers, well, you are pretty much screwed any which way you look at it.

Amount of serious injuries including dimemberment, lifetime disabilities?
